Do you want to shave down your dog but are not sure where to start? No worries, we are going to take you through a full shave of Desmond, a Phantom Spoo. Yes, it is a lot work, but if you need this information, we are going to try to make it as detailed and clear as possible. And remember, not every breed is eligible (or should) be shaved - especially our thick double-coated breeds (these guys just need a lot of brushing.) Hope this helps and thanks for joining!

Thanks for the great video, Gina! Not sure if it was just my imagination, but I always used to put a warm blade flat-side down on a metal plate/table and it seemed to help it cool down faster than if I set it on other materials after swapping out blades. (I'm also not a fan of tons of spray!) I'm trying to get back into pet grooming after doing office work for a few years and your videos have been such helpful refreshers! ❤

Thank you so much for your input! Yes, putting a blade on a cooler surface is an amazing way to keep your blades from getting too hot. Physics always wins, lol, and thanks for bringing it up! I also left a desk-job profession to follow my heart with animals. It's not an easy road, but it is fulfilling! I wish you all the best on your journey! Life is short; we should live it, right? Thanks for watching, and I sincerely hope you keep me updated on your path in grooming! Thanks for your incredibly insightful and valuable comment! 🙏

Great video. I missed something. I thought you did the precut with a #7. Then said put on a #7 to finish up. Could you explain what each numbered blade is used for. Thank you!

Hi Joyce! Thank you, and sorry for any confusion! For shavedowns, you can use the same blade for the pre-cut and finish cut (i.e. #7 pre and #7 post bath), but I sometimes use a longer blade or guidecomb on the finish cut (just one step up from the pre-cut blade) to give a bit of an illusion of a slighter longer cut. I hope that makes sense! Thanks so much for your comment! 😍

Thank you sooo much for taking the time for this valuable info. I've always groomed our fur babies over thr years and basically winged it got many compliments on the cuts. Our current pupper is absolutely a spinner on the table. He's a Shishon very smart he's been turned down halfway through cuts at groomers. I've been called at times to come in and assist because one person just cant handle his exhausting antics. Then I wind up out of guilt and gratitude cleaning tbe salon up lol soo its been soo stressful to get someone else to do it I might as well just do it myself. Nail trimming is a total nightmare. I don't want to go the way of sedation which has been suggested. Its a psychological game and its exhausting. Any advice how to get control over this? I never had a dog that has given me so much hassles. He loves bathing, drying isng an issue, I can do his face mo problem. His nails ,feet are next to impossible to do. I have a hanging hammock he's too smart for it now you cant get it on him lol He will nip also. Have a cone a muzzle have tried treats etc. Any advise? I'm on a guilt trip thinking this is my fault. He's the perfect dog other than this issue.

Hi Michelle! Omg, sounds like you have a sweet little handful! 😍 Rest assured that many dogs absolutely hate their feet being touched, so that is not unusual! I agree, the sedation route should be your last resort, although you can ask for a prescription calming agent (like a doggie xanex, lol) or look at natural camling aids (CBD, pheromone sprays, etc.) But the best way is to train him to trust you touching his paws, which takes time. So while you're watching TV, play with his paws and then reward. Make it a routine, and then start with one nail, reward, next nail, reward. My little Hav mix was a nightmare for nails too, and now he tolerates it - so it can work! But for small client dogs that hate their nails done, I wrap them in a thick towel while someone else holds them close to their chest, and then I pull out one paw at a time and quickly clip. Hope this helps and good luck! 💕

@@GinasGrooming thanks hun yea he's 6 years old already and has been like this all through the years. I don't want to get bit. He bit the groomer in the thumb the last visit then she kissed him and said You didn't mean it! LOL yea he did mean it. I'm at my wits end at times. I have tried the Xanax route and Valerian root also. Its not that effective on him. Oh well thanks hun I really appreciate your input.

Why didn't you brush the dog out before you started clipping? Slightly horrified over here.

Hi Louise, brushing before a *shavedown* is an unnecessary step that causes the dog to be on the table for longer than it needs to be. But you are absolutely right, any "haircuts" leaving length should always be brushed and washed thoroughly before the cut. Hope that clarifies!
