He really is! Kenny has been riding really good this year, there is just so much competition! Barcia really surprised me too the second half of this Supercross season! I was bummed he went down at Nashville!

After recently buying my first adventure bike and new tech 7 boots and few adjustments on the gear shifter and 3 hours riding I worked out by trial and error the techniques you teach were the only way I could change gears. Stumbled across your KZfaq video and appreciate you confirming it’s the proper way to do it. My ankle is definitely happier now. Cheers from down under Australia 👍🏾

This helped a lot. I just bought a pair of adventure boots (SIDI Adventure 2s) going from a more sport style boot. I ride a BMW R1200 RS - sport touring. I was struggling with shifting after years of riding street bikes. My motocross days are coming back to me thanks to your video. These instructions are excellent for all types of riding - you do want to be on the balls of your feet. Using the foot peg as leverage is a key instruction for up shifting! Thanks!

Thank you! Just bought tech 7s and went dirt riding for the first time after years on the road flicking the shifter up with sneaker like road boots withiut thinking and it was a real struggle, i stacked it too coz couldnt shit up so front wheel slid out.

Gday Dakota, Thanks mate for taking the time to put this info out there. At 55 I’m just getting back into bikes after best part of 40 years away. I’m loving it. Recently bought a WR250 and best exercise I’ve had in ages. I bought all the good safety gear as my wife was dead against it and I’ll never hear the end of it if I hurt myself 😁. She sees how much I enjoy it, so she’s coming around and I’ve hopefully got enough sense to take it easy. This is exactly the issue I’m having in my Gaerne SG 22’s. I know it’s not the boots, it’s my lack of experience. I’m having issues shifting and am also sitting back down to shift as feel unco. Where I ride the terrain has you standing nearly all the time which is a great work out. I’m gonna get practicing when next out with that placement and leverage. Will find some leveller ground and start practicing the balanced standing shift too. Best advice I got recently from an experienced buddy was “you will go where you look”. It’s very true too. real helpful. i will have my bike i a month or so honda says. they say it will be in stock again and my name is on the list to get it. and i will get boots. and this was very helpful. i am a life long bmx freestyle rider and still ride and am over 50. but i got a dual sport on the way that i can take off road down dirt roads and fishing trips and camping etc. so this was great info

I just started riding in Alpinestars Tech 7 motocross boots and I found it difficult shifting because the pegs I have are ultra grippy and the bottom of the boots are ultra grippy so I just started using the heel of the boot to find the correct position and just shoving my foot under until the heel catches and then upshifting. Downshifting is much easier for me but I still use the heel at a catch point where I know I am in the right position.

Good tips, I rode a Suzuki 125 as a young teen, then a 250. A couple seasons ago I swapped for a crf450r. Fun bike but this one has hurt when I’ve layed it down. Finally got my first Mx boots because of that and it was like I forgot how to ride 🤣

When I bought my first pair I was convinced it was safer riding without them lol. Once I heard practiced more riding without them no longer felt right

What happened to the throttle when downshifting on a 4 stroke? It's important. You can lock up the rear wheel on a big single. 2 strokes are a whole different kettle of fish though. The only other thing I'd suggest is to wear them around the house as much as you can when they're new. You'll help break them in as well as get your feet and reflexes used to more support and also the increased stiffness.

SIDI boots with ankle hinge. Make sure toe area is small to get below shifter. Move shiver up one spline if needed. Lower rear brake pedal so yo dont drag rear brake. My 2 cents

Started riding 44 years ago. Never really used appropriate safety gear. After all these I am having to get used to shifting in rock solid Gaerne boots. This is a good message for new and old.

I bought the wrong boots ( plastic slippy) compounded with a what seemed extra short gear changer which caused me to miss shift often. Solution bought leather boots ( soft ) and changed the gear peg😮

I traded my 1290 Super Duke for a Husq 701E, and switched from road boots to Gaerne SG22 this week. I have 40 years of road boot behavior to unlearn. Not to mention throwing my weight in the opposite direction in corners. I feel like I'm right back to that scary period where wrecks are way more likely. I'm 6 foot 2 and I have pegs on the way that are 20mm lower and 20mm back. The 701 does not seem to be set up to have the brake pedal low enough either. Most of the adjustment range seems way too high to be useful. Especially in MX boots.

@mntbigker I'm in the same boat. Loving my new 701E but tried it with new SG22's today and gave up and put my old boots back on. There's so little space there. Which pegs have your ordered that are 20mm lower and 20mm back?

Try to mount the brake pedal with the screws from to bottom up it helps a lot to get it lower

@@juliusbaumgartner5361 Already done thanks. I also have a stepped aftermarket cleat. I have reverted to road boots until I get more comfortable on road. I'm feeling probably too confident on the bike lately. ;) With 50/50 tires this bike is so much fun it should be illegal. I'm so glad I didn't get something supposedlymid-size that weighs another 100 pounds. THIS bike is mid sized. And it's one of the only ones that actually IS.

I can’t feel anything when I have boots on and I rely on feeling like I can’t tell if I’ve actually changed gears or not and with the break it I just place it on the break I’m actually pushing down flat on it and there clunky as hell

This is a very common problem when first learning how to ride in boots. With shifting you will want to learn how to hear the rpm level of the dirt bike, and judge a gear shift based on that. Even once you get more comfortable you will still miss the gear shifter every once in a while, however it will become a habit in your riding to learn how to move your foot to the gear shifter or brake lever and back to the proper foot position! Keep practicing as this will become much easier with time!

I’ve seen some places where you don’t need to clutch when down shifting if there’s no load on the transmission, like in a low rpm, is that true. Getting my first bike in 2 weeks

I like to suggest always using the clutch just to save the bikes transmission when possible! You can shift gears without the clutch in those situations if your racing, and really looking for that additional edge. However if your just riding it never hurts to use the clutch!

My issue with my boots they feel too big and brand new .... Shifting down is simple but shifting up seems to be a bit of an annoyance but as you say its something you haveto get past

As you keep wearing your boots they will break in any get easier to move in! It’s something that’s awkward at the beginning, but you will get used to it! Just work on articulating your foot under the gear shifter, and this problem will go away before you know it!

You thought right. Only time you need it during a race is when you mentioned it. Been racing for 20 years and have never busted a trans by slamming gears.

What boots you wearing? Lol. Your ankle moves WAY more than mine does. I know you’re saying not to use your ankle, but you’re clearly getting some pivot out of those boots. It’s like, 5-15 degrees but that’s hugely helpful.

yeah, he has expensive flexible boots. most affordable boots dont bend at all. you have to lift your knee to shift.

You may have them too tight and cutting off circulation. Check the fastener adjustment. Otherwise, hydrate.
