I was a very young teen-ager when my Grandpa was trying to teach me how to drive an old two stick Lincoln log truck.I asked how do you know when to shift. His anwers started with a very cantankerous laugh. It's like being with a women, listen to her.She will tell you what she like's,and how she likes it.Then do what she likes, and keep doing what she likes. It was alittle bit of time before I truely new what he meant. But when I finally new what he meant.Ha ha.I called him up right away and said Grampa What you said about shifting gears makes sense now.Grandpa erupted into the best laugh I've ever.Kurt thank you so very much for bringing back great memories. That was along time ago,but it seems like yesterday.Great job and thanks again.

This made me laugh "as you would hold a baby bird" im 57 yrs old ive driven dam near every kind of setup. I dont think in all that time ive held a baby bird. One thing i noticed when he was driving" ive heard this saying save your brakes and shift it in neutral save your fuel. There is a reason why you should never do this. In my professional opinion "jake brakes" should never be used on flat grades thats not what a jake brake is designed to do. No matter what drivers tell you brakes today are meant to last a longer time. A jake brake to most drivers is like buying a a car thats loud no matter what they tell you its because they think the noise is cool. The idea of saving brakes is nonsense. Unless you do alot of in town shifting you are never using that much fuel to downshift. coasting is never a good idea

I really enjoyed this video on your shifting procedure. The first car i drove was my dads 1958 ford fairlane with a 3 on the tree. He always told me to ease it into each gear and listen to the speed of the engine as i shifted. The biggest truck i ever drove was a U.S. Army duece and a half when i was stationed at Ft. Riley Kansas. It was 1972 and i had just returned from my year in Vietnam as a gunner on 4.2 inch mortars. Driving that duece and a half is a good memory for me.

The 18 speed is not an 18 speed because it has 3 reverse gears. It's 18 because you can split the first 5 low range gears equaling 10 then split the 4 high range gears equaling 8, for a total of 18. If it was the way you explained it then a 15 speed would really be a 20 speed

This truck, & the way you drive it reminds me so much of my Dad's last truck before he retired & how cool calm & collected he was as he pedalled it between Sydney & Brisbane every night doing Express Parcel Freight. His was a Western Star 66" bunk Long Bonnet 4972, C-15 (600hp), 18 Speed Eaton (Road Ranger) & 3.55:1 Diffs. The way First class comes on boost & sings reminds me so much of this old truck. And of course the beauty of a an 18 speed is you can use them all, or just split the top box & drive it like a 13 speed, or not split them at all & drive it like a 9 speed.

I don't feel it was long-winded or confusing-ng at all. I learned a lot, thanks. That idea of moving briefly into neutral when you split makes a lot of sense, it lets the splitting mechanism inside the trans do its work under no-load conditions ... smart. Thanks for a valuable lesson.

Hearing you talk shifting never gets old. Just like watching & listening to you row gears never gets old. You're smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy, and I love how you respect your chariot. FWIW, in terms of numbering, here's how it was explained to me by an Eaton-Fuller engineer. I think the confusion comes from the three ways the terms low & high come into play (Low gear, Low & High Side, Lo & Hi for each gear). Reverse Lo Reverse Hi 1 = Low Lo 2 = Low Hi LOW SIDE: 3 = 1 Lo 4 = 1 Hi 5 = 2 Lo 6 = 2 Hi 7 = 3 Lo 8 = 3 Hi 9 = 4 Lo 10 = 4 Hi HIGH SIDE: 11 = 5 Lo 12 = 5 Hi 13 = 6 Lo 14 = 6 Hi 15 = 7 Lo 16 = 7 Hi 17 = 8 Lo 18 = 8 Hi

Now there's how it's better "splitted" properly, with the lever out & then back into the higher gear vs just flip the splitter switch & manipulate the rpm & let it pop into the next higher gear. 👍 My old man trained me on a super 10 manually splitting as you do here ( with the lever out in neutral) & I figured the 13 & 18 speeds on my own. (Was easy transition). Enjoyed the vid thank you . 👍

Well Mr. Kurt I understand you a 100% , lot of guys keep asking you because they don't understand what you're talking about, They are just going to have to start learning, Myself I'm the same way I don't need too look at the tac, I have the feel and the ear of the engine, But I have learned this through my driving career, and the slow Shifting that you have I can have the slow Shifting in this peterbilt and it is all on RPM ,when I first bought this truck it was slow shifting and my friend plugged it in and reset the RPM for the engine RPM too come down quicker then it was doing, It's kind of like low medium and high, On high RPM come down too slow for me, so we put it on number one stage, RPM come down to quick so I stuck it on number 2 and it works perfect for me, Be safe Kurt

Quite enjoyable. I learned that you should always try to be smooth when shifting, not raking the gears, and to always use the clutch. I later learned that in most cases you don’t clutch except for that 1st time. Oh, that’s a little nicer...then I get into a different truck and has been jammed a lot. It will act a little different when you shift. Now that may seem strange, but that’s what I’ve gathered. But no matter what, I like to be smooth and not wind it out too much when shifting...if nothing else but to make sure that you’re not causing your load to rock around, etc. Good stuff! 🤩🥰

I think your going the right way with it you can’t directly count how many gears there is, and another thing you said is you don’t look at your rpm’s yes that’s great I believe all drivers should learn to train their Ear to listen for when to shift because you can’t always look down at your rpms or feel the shift you know but great video man.

Hi there. Great video and splitting. Here in South Africa we do it the same. Changing gears without touching the clutch, except when you are stopping. Stay safe and let me know whenever you need some drivers, im available, you just have to get me there....

Kurt, those are the drivers that destroy transmissions, rear ends, and power dividers. They don’t know how to respect the truck or either just stupid.👍👍👍

FYI, the number of speeds refers to forward speeds only, does not include reverse. I do agree that you are one of the smoothest drivers I've seen in a long time! Have Fun and Happy Motoring!!

@user-qv1wu8qq4r The 18 speed transmission is laid out in an 'H' pattern. The easiest way to become familiar with the 18 speed is to practice shifting in an H pattern. The driver uses second, third, fourth, and fifth, then splits up into high range and then shift the H pattern again for sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth gear

Nice vid, never drove a US Truck, but could tell when to shift while hearing the engine. Cool to hear when Turbo really spins and makes these whining noise.Btw i"m a trucker here in Germany, driving a 16speed M.A.N.. Always prefer manual over automatic transmission
