Do you have to apply the brake before shifting the gear?

No you dont, you can shift while stopped or while driving, the shift from 2hi to 4hi is easy and designed to be done while in motion for ease of use, thanks

How does 4 low give better traction? I know it puts you in a lower gear range giving you more torque but never thought it did anything for traction.

Your correct low range puts you in a lower gear, how that helps with traction is it minimizes wheel spin and utilizes the gear reduction of low range to allow the power distribution to be as equal as possible essentially giving you more traction because a spinning wheel is putting any power to the ground, that lower gearing also allows you to feather the pedal and have more control of the power the vehicle has

how to go back from 4l to 4h and then 4h to 2h?

Great question, put the transmission in neutral that allows the transmission and transfer case to sync, push the lever forward to 4hi. Put the transmission back in drive and then push the 4x4 lever into 2high

@TheJerseyBoy the transfer case shift from low range to neutral is straight up, you have to move the lever to the left then up for 4 hi and 2 hi which is also straight up movement
