I’ve been researching the container route.....my rig is too wide, and too tall, so my other option is building it completely lockable, since I’m building it from scratch, it wouldn’t be too difficult to design locking access panels and control limiters.....designing is my passion and God gives me awesome ideas, such as a roll down dash shield.....difficult to drive a vehicle without gauges, lights or acccessories

Excellent Vlog with lot's of good information. I have seen 20 foot HC (High Cube) containers that are 9'6" tall on the exterior and the door opening 8' 5". I don't know how common they are and if they are only used on specific routes but they do exist. Check the ports you will be traveling to and ask ahead of time if they have the taller HC Container available if you can't fit inside the 20' standard height container with a door height of 7' 6".

Excellente video Dan (as usual). You’re so engaging when you talk! Do you know anything about registering your car once you reach your destination (especially if you plan to stay in the same country for a long time, let’s say i ship my car from Buenos Aires to Italy and plan to stay there for a year). Thanks again and keep it up! 🙌🏻
@TheRoadChoseMe
@TheRoadChoseMe 4 жыл бұрын
That is extremely hard to do. You have to fully "import" the vehicle, which means paying taxes, import duties, crash safety, emissions, etc. etc. For some countries it's going to be impossible, for some it's just going to be really expensive. It's different for every country in the world, and it's not something I'm ever going to do due to the cost!
@mariafernandez.veneto
@mariafernandez.veneto 4 жыл бұрын
The Road Chose Me thanks for your answer. I guess unless we are talking about a fully customised vehicle, it’s simpler and cheaper to buy one directly at destination. Thanks again for being so approachable!!
@TheRoadChoseMe
@TheRoadChoseMe 4 жыл бұрын
That also depends on the country - in many it's simply impossible for a foreigner to register a vehicle, or in the case of Argentina you can, but you can't drive it out of the country!
@EspanaPorFavor
@EspanaPorFavor 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRoadChoseMe Dan, do you know if it's possible to buy and register a car as a foreigner in Canada or the US, then drive it to let's say Argentina or Chile and sell it there? From logistic point of view, that seems to make more sense than shipping a car from Europe. But maybe the administrative hurdles are too high for that option? Thanks for all the overlanding information, by the way, it's really priceless!

This is great information! For a few months now been looking for a truck to take on the Pan American Highway. Found one with a length of 19'2'' including rear bumper that would technically just fit if the interior length of the container is 19'4''. My question based on your experiences Dan would be do I necessarily want an overland vehicle in your opinion that long? For the Latin Americas and beyond. It's turning radius is pretty awful.

Cool video! Thank you for sharing! I have a question in regards to this. Can you explain the legality of mods? Bumpers, fenders, vehicle width, or anything that is important to know? I enjoy off roading, but I know that short fenders are a big no no in many places. Same goes for some types of bumpers I believe, like stingers, for example. Is there any way that you could go over information about how to have a vehicle that will not give you difficulties while being out there?

Hey Dan I have a question about this topic. Why did you choose to ship to Belgium instead of France, Portugal or Spain for your Africa trip? I have read your blog post as well and you didn’t seem to go into detail about your reasoning, but I’m guessing you have a good reason to add all that fuel cost and driving time to your trip. Do ports in Spain or France have a bad reputation? Thanks in advance and thanks for these videos.

Your Mustang GT can be both temporarily and permanently imported to the UK, but if you're permanently importing a vehicle under 10 years old, you will need to pass an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test and a few other taxes including sales tax at 20%. If it's over 10 years old, whilst you still have to pay some taxes, you only need to have a road-worthiness test, known as a MOT, which is a lot cheaper and easier to pass (not required for temporary importation).

Thanks for the RoRo warning, I was leaning that way, so now I know to build my rig to fit the 20 foot container.....knowing this as I build is ver advantageous because I can literally build it to fit snug inside the container, with the front and rear bumpers close to the walls, it minimizes damages to the rig
@TheRoadChoseMe
@TheRoadChoseMe 3 жыл бұрын
You don't want it close to the walls, if it touches it will be damage. Remember the suspicion will compress/re bound as they're slinging the container around. Also remember it has to fit through the door!

If you were to pick 1 country in Africa that includes "most of Africa" in term of road situation etc. What my plan is then to just fly in, rent 4x4 camper and try it out for 3-4 weeks. Both to give the wife chance to try and also for me to feel what works for us and what doesn't. But I also don't want to drive around with whole house with me. I have many times bogged in large trucks and it is all fun until you have to dig out few cupid yards of dirt to get on with your trip. Only to get bogged again 15 minutes later. I also learned that many parks don't allow the biggest trucks. I have come to realize that it is quite tricky balance of fuel and water range, off road abilities, gravel road comfort. And good cooking and good night sleep. No fun driving around in monster truck, but eat canned food and sleep on bunk bed. Nor to be fun to not be able to go 30% of the places you want to go because of bad vehicle.

It seems reasonably easy to get the vehicle to a foreign country, but almost impossible to get it insured with comprehensive insurance. V. good information which is correct from my experience. A couple of comments: 1. Options for RORO are much reduced since these ships generally only serve major routes (whereas containers go pretty much anywhere). Also most RORO operators insist that the vehicles travel empty, i.e. without personal effects, which is a real pain. 2. 10% sounds very high for insurance of container contents. On a recent trip I paid 4% and other companies were charging down to 2.5%. 3. The security bolt is only added at the time of loading if there isn't going to be subsequent customs inspection before the container is loaded, however the security risk during this window is still much lower than RORO. If anyone is interested they can see my recent experiences of vehicle shipping at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbWWgcpmv73KoI0.html

Can you ship an RV?

Yep, no problem. Likely it won't fit in a container though, so you'll have to go RORO

When you drove in Africa, how many times were you stopped by the police? I want to ship my SUV from Romania to the USA for a month-long trip from the east coast to Alaska next June but am sort of worried about all the State cops who will be pulling me over. What paperwork do you show foreign police to confirm for them that you are allowed to be driving? How long are you allowed in a given country to drive a foreign car? 30 days?

The police in North America will not be a problem. We don't have the corruption that some developing countries have. You might get the occasional cop and sees a European license plate and decides to pull you over and investigate but they're not going to seize your or arrest you. If you want to drive from the east coast to the west coast you can do it in about 4 days but that is pretty much driving as far as you can. You'll have another couple of days to get to Alaska.

I forgot to mention a few things about America that will be off to you. Most places have a sales tax which is added on top of the purchase price. So when are you seeing something marked $10 it's going to be $10 plus the sales tax. Also Americans are very approachable they will say hello and start a conversation with a complete stranger. Your soda at a restaurant you get free refills you don't pay for each one. And also we have a tipping culture. it's customary to tip your waiters and waitresses at a restaurant. The normal standard would be 15 to 20% of the pre-tax total for bill. Spanish is the second most commonly spoken languagebut don't expect most people to speak anything other than English. and don't be surprised if you see somebody who's not dressed up as a police officer who has a handgun on their hip. That's especially common in a place like Alaska.

Dacia Project You are correct, sir. I’ve seen those videos as well. I live in the US, and can tell you you will 99% have no problems. You MAY end up with an ignorant (just doesn’t know) police officer who thinks you’re doing something wrong. However, it always washes out and you are on your way. In my area we have lots of European registered cars visiting every year. No worries.

No no no..... You've got it all wrong. You first need to build a space shuttle and mission control centre. It's all about camping with like minded people who've also spent the mega-rubles on custom fit-outs and holding hands having a love-in and obtaining that confirmation bias your brain so desperately needs. If you haven't spent 200k on building your car then you need to increase your credit limit some more and truly build that edifice and mobile monument to your self. After all, what you're really looking for is justification praise for knowingly enslaving your economic future to a bank.
