This is my first of (*hopefully) many VLOGs. It focuses on the preparation that I took, getting my fashion photography published in a national newspaper!
It offers my 6 top tips on how best way to shoot runway and backstage at London Fashion Week, or any other runway show :D
You can skip to areas that interest you, using the timeline below:
1:07 - Backstage Reportage and posed photographs
1:51 - Lens selection
2:55 - Preparing for the runway show /Camera settings
4:07 - Fine tuning your camera settings
4:44 - Shooting For Editorial
6:02 - The Photographers pit
Let me know what you think of this video, I am here to learn as much as I am to share what I have learned.
This video was shot on my new Sony A6500. I will write a review on this item soon, as I am testing it with a view to moving away from my Nikon DSLR.

Congratulations!!! Amazing work and accreditation!! Thanks so much for the information about getting your spot at the runway and about aperture setting. I had thought F6 or F8 might help keep all in focus, but I guess as F4, as long as you're not 3 feet from your subject, you might then have crisp in-focus images. VERY good to know. Thanks so much for sharing!

Dear content creators and enthusiasts, I hope you're all fit and well, given the pandemic situation around the world! It has been a tricky 3 months to be a creative, but hopefully, there is light approaching at the end of the tunnel. In order to keep busy while we were locked down, I launched a brand new website with content from other commercial work that I do and that will soon include some new how-to guides, my latest VLOGs ( A full review of the Nikon Z6 will follow this month) and my corporate work. Eventually, this new platform will replace this channel. So feel free to keep up to date with my content by following me on Instagram: @olaleyemedia checking out my new website: www.olaleyemedia.co.uk Also, check out the follow up video to this VLOG, if you haven't already done so: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oq6HqtCBztOcm40.html Finally, get in touch to send me any suggestions for reviews you'd like to see and questions on photography and videography. Catch up soon. E PS If you hadn't already guessed... I have switched back from Sony to Nikon. The original switch barely lasted 12 months, so for any Nikon shooters, you'll want to know why its best not to make the mistake that I did. Full details to follow in a week or two!

Unbeknown to me at the time... the legendary Swiss model, Jennifer Ann- Gerber, was headlining for the fashion house 'Rohmir'. Once the Swiss press got hold of the story (* Jennifer Ann-Gerber's return to top flight modelling), they wanted pictures to go with the press article.the designer selected my pictures, as the ones that best represented the brand. I am immensely proud of this achievement and have a copy of the newspaper to remind me to keep challenging myself!

Hi Eddie, this is a pretty cool video. I am a freelance runway/fashion photographer in Jamaica and have shot all the major fashions events on the island over the last few years. We have a lot of international models from Jamaica as well. My dream is to experience NY or LFW. How do suggest i get that break? Btw, i shoot Nikon Z with 70-200/24-70/50mm . For BTS i use AD360 or Godox V860 flash with 12in umbrella.

You need to apply to the event organisers for an accreditation. Contact the venue well in advance and they will inform you of the criteria (*usually you need to be commissioned by a magazine, be working for 1 of the designers or have accreditation with a press organisation). I hope this is helpful. Best. E

Networking is an essential component to getting your work published.. Before the event you should network with designers, particularly up and coming designers, to see if they need an official photographer. Their work may be picked up by the press, in which case they'll ask the designer for an official photographs. In my case, I was the official photographer and the model in question is a legend in her own right. The Swiss press were keen to do a story on Jennifer Ann-Gerber's return to the catwalk.

Do you get paid for your work on the runway that ending up on those news covers ? You mentioned it was your beginning ,if so ,how did you know what to charge or how to use the opportunity from your press pass of your first show(s)
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393 Жыл бұрын
Initially I had a mentor, who has worked in the industry for many years to help me navigate the industry. As a photographer, the payment for covering runway shows and the value of exposure can vary. Here are the key points to consider: Commissioned Work: When hired by a designer to photograph a runway show, I negotiate my rates based on my experience, the scope of the assignment, and the usage rights for the photos that I provide. It is crucial to have clear agreements in place to avoid any misunderstandings. What to charge: Look into industry standards and compare prices charged by photographers with a similar level of experience and portfolio quality. Also network with photographers, in forums and in person. This will help you establish a competitive rate while considering your unique circumstances. Keep in mind that pricing can be negotiable, especially when starting out. Gaining Access: If you're new to the industry, target emerging designers who are exhibiting at the event. Be open to discussing your rates with clients and finding a mutually beneficial arrangement. Emphasise the value you bring as a photographer, even if you are new to the industry. Alternatively, contact the relevant PR for the event to request a press pass. The PR will ask for examples of published work or links to view your portfolio, but when events are oversubscribed this may not be enough. Balancing Exposure and Payment: Being featured in news publications can provide valuable exposure that increases visibility and attracts potential clients. In some cases, the exposure itself can be more valuable than the immediate monetary payment. However, it is important to strike a balance and ensure that the exposure gained from press coverage aligns with the financial value you place on your work.

Can you tell me the process to get all those runway shots on the Lightroom screen at one time ...I have light room but do not know how to do it and I am not on a Apple computer I’m on a dell pc
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, I'm not entirely sure how to a Dell works, as I have a Mac, but I assume its pretty similar. In 'Library' mode you can select the 4 squares image directly below the 'import' and 'export' buttons to get all the images on screen at once. If you want to select specific images to compare, hold down the 'ctrl' button (command on a Mac) and select the required images before releasing the button. Once your selection is complete, press the letter 'N' and all the images you selected will appear in a grid / row. I will make a quick video on my new IG page: @olaleyemedia later to show you.

Contact the PR company for the fashion event that you want to shoot. They will ask for samples of your work, but usually they prefer photographers with published work, so also try and get your work published. Another way in, is if you contact up and coming designers who will be showcasing at an event. Offer them a service that works for you both. Connections are all about networking, so try connecting with photographers who are in the industry in your city! All the best for the year ahead and beyond

@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393

You can call me Eddie... As you have a passion, create a portfolio and forward it to the PR company/s that are hosting the event. Bear in mind, PR companies prefer photographers who have been published, so this is something to think about too. Also, and this is likely to be more fruitful, at least in the short-term, do a little research and contact the designers directly, offering to shoot for a discounted rate, or even... and I hate say this... "for free", just to get your foot in the door!

I have a question which camera would you recommend for runway And high fashion The Canon 5d mk ii Or the Canon 1dx
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393 4 жыл бұрын
I'm a Nikon shooter, so my knowledge of Canon equipment is limited. Both cameras are full frame and quite similar in spec. The only major difference that I could see, is that the 5d mk ii seems a little slow at 3.9 fps (v 10fps). Although, I don't tend to shoot in burst mode, it is still a nice to have the option to have. Whichever camera you choose, shoot RAW!

My question is, how do you actually have the opportunity to shoot backstage? Are there a lot of photographers there doing the same thing? Do you just go in with your canon and telephoto lens and start shooting?? That's what I wanted to know.
@eolaleye
@eolaleye 4 жыл бұрын
My apologies for the late response... Generally, you need to be working for a publication that promotes fashion events. This makes it easy, as they're given "accredited" status . If you try and apply as an independent, you can apply (*early) to shoot for the event organiser, This usually requires you to send them a link to your portfolio and see if they're willing to hire you. Otherwise, it is unlikely that they will be able to get a press pass (*Access all areas). In previous years, some photographers have behaved inappropriately, allowing there egos to dictate there behaviour in a busy environment(*see also my reference to "an urban legend" in the video). I hope this helps :)
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393
@olaleyemedia-photographyvi393 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for taking the time to ask this question. Apply to the event organisers for an accreditation (*specifying whether you want to shoot runway and or backstage). Contact the venue well in advance and they will inform you of the criteria (*usually you need to be commissioned by a magazine, be working for 1 of the designers or have an accreditation with a press organisation such as the NUJ. However, even if you have none of the above, have an online portfolio that you can send them). Backstage is really crowded with all of the people who bring a fashion show to life (including photographers and videographers). Your lens selection is key to your success on the day (e.g. in low light situations I would tend to use prime lens such as 50 or 85mm, so that I can be unobtrusive. I would use a telephoto such as a 70-200mm f2.8, in a well lit room, where I could tuck myself into a corner) I avoid using flash when shooting reportage, and tend to use it to bounce light or a few portraits I hope this is helpful. E

I shoot RAW and Jpeg, as my Nikon D3s has 2 card slots. This is to ensure that I have a backup. Additionally, if you're working for an online publication, you may need to to send them photos while on assignment. In this business every second counts. Photographers tend to use any downtime to select/send their best photos via laptop to their commissioning body. Photos can be online within 1 hour.

Find out who is exhibiting and at which show. This information is usually available on the hosting venues website. Network with all up and coming designers and offer your services. New designers are more likely to be interested than established brands. Also, you could try using some of the images on a stock image website (*this route is slower, but may provide some revenue when you least expect it) as generic modelling photos.
