@@waxwork34 They should still work - the expiry date on the box is recommended use by date. The cartridges (and all film) have been known to be ok decades later but there will be compromises in quality - also dependent on how the film has been stored - film hates being in hot humid conditions - so if it has been stored in cool, dark, dry conditions helps prolong the life and quality of the exposed result. If you're using exposed stock be sure to note that to the lab doing developing as they will make adjustments to give the best possible outcome, although it won't be perfect.

It's insane how the quality of personal video cameras in the 60s-70s were better than the quality of most personal cams from the 80s to less than decade ago.

Video wise yeh, but remember average film didn't hit the higher iso numbers we have now, not to mention worse composition of them left larger grain for the most part ( dont get me wrong here, there have been beautiful films available for the last hundred years, just talking about film your average dad bought at the drug store) then the reall kicker, no sound on almost all home cameras back then. ( and yes I know sound cameras were available, but that meant enthusiast level camera, projector,film and a place that would process it) add in the fact you need a projector to view your movies and the work involved. It's no surprise everyone settled on lower video quality for all the benefits of the tape cameras.
@MrRecall200

Hell, actually the same kinda thing happened with digital. My dad went out and spent a couple grand on a "fancy" 1.3 megapixel digital while my mom kept her film point and shoot. Needles to say half the photos from that time frame, 2000ish, look like blurry washed out garbage and half still hold up today. But hey my dad was happy to just plug his camera in and make the worst ever color prints at home.

It's the same reason Kodak denied digital as a concept due to it was very hard to capture good quality for the time. That's why most film cameras look tons better than digital ages until recent years
@cryptidproductions3160
@cryptidproductions3160 2 жыл бұрын
It's not that digital is inherently worse, it's that digital often requires tons more light to capture the same level of detail as film unless it's a really expensive high-end sensor. Most digital cameras made in the last 15 years will blow away consumer-grade film outdoors or in well-lit buildings

In my work, I am currently digitizing old Super 8 and Standard 8 reels for clients. I have known the format since I was a kid, but never felt the need to know it better, when I got older. In this world of 4K footage, H.264 and 128 GB memory cards, I have only huge respect for this format, even when it is mostly without sound. I salute you, Willem.

I'm an old fart, so I started with Regular 8 film before we had Super 8 film. With Regular 8, you'd run through 25 feet of film and after that, flip the film over and shoot the other 25 feet. During processing, the film was split down the middle and the two parts were spliced together. Regular 8 was shot at 16 FPS. The switch to Super 8 was a real improvement, but Kodak changed the frame rate to 18 FPS. I was unhappy about that because it gave a slightly shorter run time. I can't recall the exact year, but around 1970, Kodak introduced Sound movies on Super 8. It was wonderful!!! I still have my old cameras and projectors. I may have to try out the Super 8 negative film for fun.

That's exactly the same camera my father bought in 1972 when I was eight, that was the beginning of my passion for movie shooting. One thing that I always forgot to change in that camera was the round battery which was charged to regulate the amount of light entering through the lens, in other words the exposure, so a lot of the images were totally overexposed.

I worked super 8 commercially in the 70,s shooting promotional marketing films for manufactures.Very hard format to work with. A lot of skill is required to get good quality pictures and you have to use a 3 position lighting set up at 3200 Kelvin. Lens are the key. A Beaulieu camera 5008 or 6008, still quite expensive around 1500 dollars US. an edit bench is essential. Transfer master film to video tape yes, but you need a very high quality multiplexer to do it. Super 8 film production is expensive at least $5 a minute. Film cleaning and a dust free room are essential. I liked super 8 as a finished product for export customers as the colors are so much better then the electric picture.But in to-days world one needs the guaranteed support from Kodak for Super 8 production

I want to mount my galaxy s10 plus to the top so I can pre record with that and use the super sparingly. When editing use some 108060p with the 18fps super 8. Aswell having audo sync with the super 8. Filming no more than 10 seconds of video per event or scene. You'd get about 15 to 18 events over a summer or project.

Willem, that camera is just for beginners. It's kind'a like a point and shoot DSLR. Me? I had a super 8 camera that was more manual than automatic. You could do scene swipes with the visor. You could do a focus dissolve from one scene to another. You could zoom by hand. So, I guess that this camera could give you some pleasure.

It's more like $45to $75 depends though, checkout Pro8mm in Burbank. I just made a little edit using their film stock as well.

wow, it’s amazing how i’m not subscribed to you or anything, but i’ve spent the past four hours extensively researching what super 8 i should buy, before stumbling upon this video in a google search thinking it was old but then seeing it was only uploaded 23 hours ago. perfect timing. my question is, between 50d and 250d, which one is better for both day and night? 250, roght? but would it make day/outdoor scenes too overexposed? should i get 50 to be safe?

Probably 250 as a good hybrid, it all depends though trail & error!

thank you so much for the video! But how do you get the footage to be 16:9 ratio instead of 4:3? i thought all super 8 were 4:3?
