Yet another great tutorial👍 To reemphasize, DO NOT overtighten that nut. I did thinking it need to be flush! Heard a nice loud crack😱 Discovered that I'd broken the lever😭 Lucky managed to salvage it with a patient bit of super glueing. So be careful!! Also, keep your barb insert tool oil free. Otherwise it may not properly grip the hose. Finally, to repeat, don't overtighten the bleed screw. It's made of soft cheese, and rounds out so easily. Don't ask about this either.😊

You were lucky to get away with that, JibbaJabber. Could've been a very costly mistake

I have managed to bottom out the nut a few times, but I've never broken a single STI lever body before. I guess I'll use the 8 mm crow foot with my torque wrench habitually next time (I have torqued compression nuts before to see and feel what it's like to torque something down with a crow foot).

@@yonglingng5640 Yep. I've always done it without thinking. Only on this time, did I notice that it was no way near flush, so I cinched it a bit more - 'crack'! Maybe I was sold a dodgy olive, although they belong to a legit pack from a reputable store. Either way, I'll be using a torque wrench on that nut from now on!

@@JibbaJabber One of my ex-colleagues cracked one as he accidentally added an olive to the hose, unaware that there's already one inside the STI lever (not his first rodeo connecting hydraulic lines), so he was compressing two olives simultaneously. All because he rushed.

I'm using BH90 hose on calipers that use BH59 nominally. It works just fine, because the only thing that changes is the inner diameter of the hose and thus the barb that goes with it. BH90 is thicker and thus stiffer, but I doubt most people would notice the difference; I certainly can't.
@ribblevalleycyclist
@ribblevalleycyclist 4 ай бұрын
Agreed, Frostbiker. I think it's something silly, like 0.2mm difference. As long as you use the matching barb, there is no difference that I know of...... which then begs the question as to why the two versions even exist 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Putting the olive on is not the next job after cutting the hose, that's making sure you've left the 8mm hollow bolt on the hose 😉 IMHO the barb insertion tools are a waste of money, its so easy to just clamp the hose in some pliers (using the blocks supplied with your brakes, or ask at a bike shop, they'll probably have some they're about to throw out) and tap it in gently with a (small) hammer. if you're gentle it aligns itself, no stress.

Great video, thank you. I need to reroute hoses through new bars. I can’t make the cables any shorter. Will I be able to get the original olive off and just replace that. Otherwise seems like a complete re-hose?

Glad you liked it. No, they're crushed on, so they won't come off...... many have tried before you!!! You'll need a new olive and barb for each end.

Not sure I could ever spend that much on a spanner 🤣. You can buy the ratcheted Park spanners individually, so bought one of those earlier today........ The odd thing is, the 7mm costs more than the 17mm 🤷🏼

RVC, have you done a vid on lever reach and stroke adjustment? I find the order of adjustment is essential to getting the lever position right. Otherwise you end up backing out or bottoming the screws. How do you go about it?
@ribblevalleycyclist
@ribblevalleycyclist 4 ай бұрын
To be honest, it's not something I've ever really got involved in..... more for the bike fit lot really. My personal bikes are where they were when they came out of the factory. Saying that though, if people say they're struggling, say with reach for example, I do let them know how to adjust it.
