One of the biggest things I struggled with is timing. And one of my personal methods that actually worked or at least helped me, is practicing my rhythm pyramid on practice pad with a metronome on. Therefore I’m working solely on subdivisions. After that I found that practicing on guitar with a metronome is much easier, less overwhelming, and way more effective. And to be honest like you said there is no shortcut, it’s all about hard work and repetition.

Not using a metronome is probably the dumbest thing you could do in learning guitar. You will literally improve at least three times as fast.

After about 1 year of practicing using this metronome method, I noticed a huge improvement in the speed, rhythm and accuracy of my playing. The results are not immediately obvious on a daily basis, but it does take some time to notice improvement. This method combined with perseverance is the key. I have only just picked my guitar up after a lengthy lay off so I’m very rusty and I thought “this could impress her if I could learn this” 😂 I’m 49. Hi Jacky, thank you for this beautiful lesson! I am definitely putting many hours a day into practicing with metronome but I'm excited to try this approach and see the results it will bring. Probably my biggest issues had been my really bad brething pattern (I used to breath from my chest instead of my belly, so I had lots of tension in my shoulders and neck) and overall tension. I am working usper hard on that and I have start to improve at a rate that I thought would not be possible. Do you have any advice to keep tension under control ? Wish you the really best !!!

i can already do sweeps but there is a sweep section on a song called objective to harvest by rings of saturn at arounmd 1:17 into the song and i cannot play them up to speed and ive been practicing it for over a month now. i will try to practice to a metronome and see some results

I know that it took me years to get really good at sports, so I guess this would be no different. Also, I'm flexing a lot and getting tense when I try to do a fast scale run... So I need to relax. I been hitting plateau and never broke it, ill do what you said, and hope to break thru. -Question how did you got to the point where you dont count 16ths notes and be able to pick 4 times per beat? I have to count it, and i noticed when it gets fast in the bpm u cant count 1 e and a fast enough. -how about doing all three gallops on 16ths notes fast? How is it done? By feel? I am talking about the 1~and a, 2 e and~, and 3 e~a. Can you make a video on tips to syncopated rhymths with a metronome?

I find it challenging playing a guitar scale at 60bpm using quarter notes is this normal due to how much time in-between clicks there is? Or should I bump the click up where I'm comfortable say 65-75BPM? Great video thsnks.

I can play fast solo, currently into avenged sevenfold but never use metronome. I want to start using it but my biggest problem is subdivision. How can you tell the subdivision, everyone on youtube tells to break down the subdivision, but none of them tell me how. Is there any accurate guide?

I've been playing for years. And being honest with myself I'm not terrible, but I'm not where I want to be. My alternate picking. Ascending alternate picking in general needs some work. Is the metronome thing something that would help? I feel like I've learned a bunch of bad habits, because I was self taught.

I hope Jacky doesn't mind if I add another comment. So, when you execute sweeps on the guitar you'll notice you can play "faster" than you initially started off with. So, practicing at a 100 BPM for a while can make your fingers play like they were at 120 or 130 BPM. But, can you actually play at that speed with a metronome? Not really, I guess (at least for me and now I'm starting to practice with a metronome again). While your fingers are "loose" they aren't in control really. They are in control at 100 BPM because you've practiced at that tempo. Just cause they are loose doesn't mean you can skip ahead. Furthermore, this is what the control is all about that Jacky mentioned.

I'm only a intermediate player. I have a tough time hearing and feeling whether I am in time with the metronome. For arguments sake. let's say I have it set at 80 and I am tryin to play 1 note per beat on the metronome. That's fairly easy for me to hear and stay in time. Now let's say I'm trying to play 2 notes per beat. I'm still physically capable of playing certain patterns (especially a triplet pattern I've been practicing for a long time) fast and clean enough, but I can't tell if I'm at 2 notes per beat, 2.1 2.5 per beat etc. I'm just not hearing or feeling the rhythm. And the faster I go the more I feel lost in terms of the timing and feel. It's almost as if the metronome is irrelevant background noise to my playing. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry but this should be for bass guitar practice too... Granted this is mainly for "sweeps" but I am wanting to sweep on the bass hence this helps me. I was also able to transpose Stevie T's sweep lesson (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKyCh7Omy5nIfZ8.html) on the bass guitar and practice using a pick, and Jayme Lewis' (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/odmbpcSrsarVYXU.html) w/ my fingers. And I also do I-ii-V7-I's sweeps. Very efficient. I might get into different chordal approaches later. Might also "steal" *ahem* borrow some of your musical phrases from your songs too. EDIT: 3:46 Stevie T also mentioned the exact same thing by roughly saying, "it is harder to play sweep picking slowly than it is to do it quickly" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7iDrdpouNfDd58.html (over here)
