I think one of the things with getting shit done with ADHD is that you kind of constantly have to parent yourself into doing stuff. And sometimes you'll just like, not do it. And sometimes the trick that worked last week doesn't work this week so you have to do something else. It's like, ongoing. It's not to say you can't get there but it's like, you're dragging a toddler, who is also you, along with you.

My Partner has an Etsy for her crochet goods. The amount of time that needs to go into marketing or money that needs to go into ad pushing, along with the low prices and long amount of time it takes to actually make the products... I don't know how anyone could do it as a side hustle rather than a way to recoup costs of a hobby.

Ya handmade goods cannot be sold for low prices. I 100% expect to pay $120+ for a hand knit sweater on Etsy. There’s a nice community of crafters on tik tok that use their videos to market their products for free. But ya you have to charge more if it’s going to be a business and not a just reduce hobby costs. I also knit and crochet but I don’t sell anything, just gifts for friends and family

I recently learned how to knit and it really put into perspective how much labor goes into just one piece of clothing. One simple adult sweater can take 20 hours to knit. That times, say $15/hr (which is very low imo) labor, + $100 materials (which is also low) = $400 just to break even! To say nothing of all the admin time of selling online or at markets or fairs, the cost of running a website, or paying seller's fees, etc. Some do it simply because they love to knit but I could never find it financially worthwhile. I will happily pay others for their skill though lol.

I did not expect TFD to go for a side hustle video... As many people already pointed out, it should not be necessary to work two jobs in order to survive and the fact that is being so normalized in the US (I'm in Europe and this is not that common AT ALL) is worrying. As for Daniella, wouldn't side hustling as a software engineer (!!!) pay them more?

Insightful comment! I am certain the market will recover as we’ve experienced far worst time and despite hard fall, the crypto market rises tremendously than we’d expected. This isn’t the time to panic or sell due to its fall, but keep investing, buying and keeping. It’s really a waste to sell now and losing so much when you can make much in future when the market recovers. I had better understanding of this system working with Donald Nathan Scott.

I unfortunately agree. Maybe I did it wrong but all I can say is it definitely didn't work for me. I would say it's working better now that I have a stable full-time job that entirely pays all my bills and leaves me a relatively substantial amount of extra time to do other jobs and/or whatever else I might want to do. Still though it's not an amazing get-rich scheme mainly because making an actual substantial amount of money with the side-hustle types of jobs is proving to be way harder (for me at least) than I thought it would be.

I'm kind of 'eh' when it comes to using side hustle money to pay off debt. This could work if you're maxed out at your current career. But the guest was a software engineer, and even in Canada (the profession pays less in Canada than it does in the US), their time would have been better spent increasing skills for a higher paying job. That's what I did, and am on track to pay off my student debt MUCH faster than if I kept my old job/income and made little money freelancing starting out. Wanting to start a business seems separate from the pay down debt goal.

I appreciate she says not every hobby needs to be monetized. It is okay to try to do so, but know where to set boundaries and dial back. Her full time job being 32 hr/wk, as well as being remote (saved commute time) also frees up time to do a side hustle. A salary position that is 32 hr/wk is highly coveted, but working part time at an hourly wage would make it like doing two part time jobs with less stability.

I tried to be a full time eBay seller during the pandemic, but it didn't really work out because I think I'm one of those people who has to have an actual job to get up and go to or I'm just not motivated to get up in the morning. I have a hard time working at home, on my own if I don't have a boss who's going to get mad at me for not showing up or coming in late. I need the external motivation. I think a lot of people are like that. I think it could maybe a good opportunity for a type of life coach. Maybe there could be life coaches who specialize in helping people like this, who want to run independent home businesses. It certainly would've been popular as hell during the pandemic lockdowns. That's for sure! They could offer a service where they call you and basically harass you to get out of bed every morning and help you to come up with goals that you're required to complete by a certain time. This could be a good business idea for people. (And I don't have ADD, btw.)

I don't have a skill for selling or marketing myself for a side hustle, but I do need another job, even just temporarily. Issue is, my current job is smack-dab in the center of the day, 8 to 5. I'd love to work part time at a call center from home, since I already work from home, but doing training seems to be impossible with my job standing in the way. I don't want to do any job that involves extensive driving, either, both for the sake of increased chances of an accident, and for because gas is damn near $5 a gallon here, and rising. Any money I'd have made would be sucked back out again. So, I'm considering possibly retail, an old "friend" I'd rather not return to, but I need to get some kind of additional employment. Maybe I'll find somewhere that can hire me for an evening shift and I don't need to come in before at least 5:30 (ideally 6), even for training. My current job gives raises and frequent promotions, but I only started in March and it's too early to ask for anything else.

Here’s a tip, for people who are crafty, and wanna make some pocket money on the side with a little less effort: go to the thrift store, and buy the clothes you think no one will want. The shirts with holes, the sweaters with holes, even things that are stained. Take em home, and patch them up; remove the stained bit, and replace it with a patch. Stitch up the holes, patch up things. Then, resell them. The thrift store price, plus 5 dollars, or whatever price you feel is good. It’s simple, it’s cheap, and it’s more ethical than flipping thrift store goods straight up. You’re contributing to the market, and not just flipping. It’s more useful, and sewing is a good skill to have.
@zoegaudry137
@zoegaudry137 2 жыл бұрын
All this costs in your own time spent thrifting the clothes, cleaning, doing the repairs, taking pics, posting for sale, arranging meetups for buyers, also in materials for the repairs/cleaning, you may need equipment like an iron or sewing machine, etc.... Not saying this is a bad idea at all just keep that in mind when deciding what you charge per item. I'm sure doing it for a while you would learn what is worth flipping and become more efficient.
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 2 жыл бұрын
I don't advocate this, there's a huge ongoing problem with "Thrift Store Gentrification" where affluent people buy up second-hand clothing to resell for profit, which diverts away the only access the low-income community has for affordable clothing. Gentrification is a constant issue where those who have the money to invade or hijack the resources of poorer neighborhoods, whether it be homes/rentals, the arts, local food, clothing, etc. This in effect drives up the prices in those communities and then displaces them to move elsewhere to areas that have not yet been gentrified - usually unsafe and crime-ridden neighborhoods. Thrift stores have driven up their prices in order to compete with online stores like Depop, Poshmark, Mercari, OfferUp, FB Marketplace, eBay, etc. It'd be one thing if resellers bought thrifted clothing at a reasonable pace, but they're buying up huge amounts much too quickly and often they'll take the nicer quality fabrics that these communities depend on, but who are then left with the raggedy and worn stuff. Thrift stores were the few stores accessible for low-income communities to find a decent collection at a fair rate, now they don't even have that anymore. This reinforces the reality that Capitalism is trickle-up, not trickle-down.
@zoegaudry137
@zoegaudry137 2 жыл бұрын
@@YourMajesty143 Absolutely agree. I think the problem goes deeper than resellers, though, when the system these low income neighbourhoods rely on to get quality clothing is charging them at all... Like why do for-profit stores exist that accept donations on behalf of non-profits, 'pay the non-profits for the donation items' (which I'm sure they turn around and use as a tax break), and then pay minimum wage and dirt cheap rent to re-sell these donations in a low income neighbourhood. And obviously they price the items higher and higher each year because capitalism.

Each side-hustle and/or talent a person chooses is done so by their own comfortability within that skill set. If a person can judge another by their person afflictions and turn around and complain or state that they can do "it" better needs to prove it to themselves. The folks that negate what goes well for others will always fail as long as they are single-minded, lack tact and are so blind they cannot recognize success.

I really enjoyed this, having a multiply ND person is great! It's impressive and inspiring that she's able to make good money from side hustles. I was especially happy when she pointed out that perspective towards Upwork and Fiverr. My gut instinct about those sites being saturated is correct, it seems. Which leads to the thought: "Well, holy crap, I'm competing with so many people." It is kind of at odds when she encourages us to give ourselves credit. My "skill" of writing isn't as advanced as the 100's, 1000's, 10's of thousands, 100's of thousands (which I'm not exactly sure if that's the correct way to phrase that anyways) of people who have experience and have honed greater skills. The information about following accounts on Twitter and joining FB groups is useful. Facebook groups are my life blood (I need to diversify socially 😅) I've received so much support and so many resources through a variety of groups, not just disability-centered ones. I'll have to check Twitter for actual job opportunities. I still need to find direction on "leveraging your network." I don't say this to complain, but as an autistic person, we don't have access to the same social skills as other ND's, given that a social deficit is a core aspect of the disorder. I like the idea of joining niche groups as a starting point. Thank you for this awesome episode, and thank you for the representation, it matters. Also if anyone here is autistic and/or ADHD, feel free to join this group on Facebook: "Autism and ADHD jobs and advice"(facebook.com/groups/413092093011294)

I don't understand the fussing in the comments section. I appreciate this video as a single mom who needs to find information on this topic from a source I can trust instead of some douchey "How I Made a Million Dollars in One Month" kind of video. Thanks for sharing your experience! I use alarms for things I have to do daily at work and I have a running list of stuff I think of and an actual daily to do list. So I have a realistic list while having space to write down all the things I think I need to do. I appreciated my time doing multiple jobs because it got me through college and gave me space/time to figure out what I don’t want to do 😆. I recommend it to those starting out their careers so they can try a little of multiple things and they have a stream of income when they decide to quit a job/interest they realize they don’t want to do.

So...side hustle...I have one that I started pre-pandemic to pay off all our credit card and student loan debt. The pandemic really changed our gas and food spending, so our debt repayment really sped up. Now...we are debt free and using the side hustle to build up a really nice savings. Recently, I've been thinking I'd like more of my time back. I work (between both jobs) 52-58 hours per week. I'm worried now that I can't get weened off that sweet, sweet "extra" money, and am on a hamster wheel of work, work, work.

This is literally what vintage shops were doing before everyone discovered it lol, thrift stores only sell about 10-20% max of all donated items and the rest go to the secondhand market in far away places like Ghana and Uganda. As many people who can stop it from being shipped overseas to be a burden to people who don’t deserve it, the better.

I would advise that side hustle doesn't have to be all about the $$$, honing and developing your skill set and brand will pay dividends in the future especially if you live in the West. Your best bet is take your skills and find a job/business that you can work remotely and live in a lot cost of living area. I know a Spanish language teacher who worked in a High School and teaches personal lessons online as a side hustle. She eventually move to Mexico and continue to teach personal lessons. She now have the benefit of low cost of living of Mexico with a decent amount of income from Spanish teaching lessons for her western clients. It took her over 10 years to develop her brand and gather enough clientele. Most of her new clients are from referrals.

People it's not for the rest of your life. Set a goal and more importantly a time frame, work your guts out if you're able and be done. Two jobs allowed me to buy my house, leave the country, purchase my first and second new car, and make over $100k in the deep south in my early 20s. Now my time is more important to me than anything else. It's time to cut expenses and enter a new industry that allows more normal hours to spend with my family. @@vulpixelful if you could have climbed the corporate later in your industry to gain an extra $20 - 30k a year the video wasn't for you which is what she said at the beginning. If you're in the sub $50k salary range it's unreasonable to cut your budget as after taxes and health care it's probably already thin. Where I live you'd need to be a general manager to get a salary $80k+ and that still involves being a lesser paid manager for quite sometime. That's F&B you're industry might be different.
