How to sight in a compound bow for beginners
In this video I demonstrate how to sight in your compound bow, this video is intended for beginners just getting into archery and looking to learn how to get started. I show the basics of getting you bow sighted in for the first time, this is an exciting time and will lead up to you getting to shoot all year long and to lead up to archery hunting season if that is your goal.

Something that’s rarely mentioned in any shooting videos is one needs to be able to pull the bow fairly easy. People buy bows and don’t understand how much strength it can take. Lowering the draw weight is the thing to do. Pulling your guts out and maybe hurting yourself isn’t necessary at all people. Beginner doesn’t need70 or 80 pounds draw usually. There’s no reason and it’s really detrimental to what you want to accomplish.

Agreed..I see these guys pull so much weight that it’s ridiculous..I pulled a muscle doin that on an 80 lb bow and now I pull a 65

you should at least train with lethal poundage though, right? if you plan on hunting?
@timgruver5932

@@YeIsCorrect train with what you can draw in the proper fashion. If it’s 45#’s to start that’s ok. Lots of women and young ones kill with that draw weight. Just don’t be macho and draw more than needed to draw right. You see so many that are over poundage and draw down low. Watch some TAC 2023 videos and you will see them. Watch “ whitetail fit” or “ bow only outdoors “ and see they way they draw. Say you buy a 60# bow and struggle so find out how many turns you can back the limb bolt out to say 50 or 52-3 pounds. Research that as every bow has a limited number of turns. Then shoot all you can and increase the draw weight like 1/2 or 1 turn. Work your way up.

@@timgruver5932 yea im starting on a 40-60 pounder and i think ill be using it for a while. ima tiny little thing and i just want to make sure im lethal when i get out there. i dont want to make an animal suffer because of a skill issue lol. i have a whole year to train before next season though, so hopefully ill be good!

@@YeIsCorrect Great! Hopefully you can shoot a lot and accomplish your goal quickly. If you can shoot just a few quality shots everyday or so things will progress faster than you will believe. If you can get where you’re hitting like a 5” diameter spot EVERY shot at twenty yards you can kill a deer or pig. I don’t know where you live but pigs can be hunted in nearly every state year round. Hopefully, you live where these things run wild. They are great eating. Because of your lower draw weight you will be better off using fixed blade broadheads. Most mechanical heads need a minimum amount of energy to fully work.

Wouldn’t it be great if every new bow owner could see this video. It’s not rocket science for basic hunting type sighting in. But it’s a little more involved in like tournament ( indoor dots or 3-d) type competition. But the basics are the same. I have been surprised over the years of the number of shooters that me and my son have helped people that have been bow hunting for a few years. Had no idea of the details of having a bow properly set up. It’s amazing the condition of some of these bows. Off timing, improper center shot, improper setting of d-loop and on and on. They don’t understand the need for a properly setup bow apparently. Good video you have here. 👍👍👀

So, in order for the scope dots to work correctly, the rear of the arrow must use the same reference point on each shot. That means either sighting your scope sights through your peep sight that’s on your string OR creating a point on your cheek or chin for your draw hand to rest on each shot. It’s like lining up your front AND rear sight on a firearm.

Great overall info in this video. My advice for any beginner is to start with a good quality and easily adjustable single pin. Multiple pins can be to complicated for newbies. In my personal opinion I would also suggest a good drop away rest to eliminate the rest throwing the shot off.

Hi, great presentation and excellent learning material for a new Whitetail Hunter owner, however I have a small and silly sounding question; I am attempting to move my scope further towards the front, but can't find the right Alan bit to loosen the small Alan? bolts that attach the scope to the rail, the supplied keys don't fit, so I just purchased a new set of bits both imperial as metric and they still don't fit... What did you use to unscrew the little buggers? Many thanks and keep up the good tutorials and hunt!

I believe I just used the ones that came with the bow. If I remember correctly they are a torx head and not an Allen head. I could be wrong because it’s been awhile and I don’t currently have the bow or I would take a look.

Rifles are too loud here on some part of my property..I really understood this. Thankyou. I have slowly got the idea,, I'm getting a nice group at 15 meters. I will get better. Edit: I'm Australian, my brother moved to England 18 years ago, long story short, he became Detective Sargent, he was sent all over Europe chasing peados, and Mafia He taught me alot about how to use alot of things. Not this though. You're a legend thankyou.

So I just got my first bow. Took it out to sight it in. After zeroing it out to 30 yards. I was consistently grouping on an 8" target shot after shot at 30 yards, most being within a 6" circle. I figured this was pretty decent so I moved out to set my next sight pin for 40 yards and for some reason with that extra 10 yards everything went to crap. Arrows going all over the place, very inconsistent trajectory. Mostly low and/or left, but I had a couple that flew right for some reason too. Same point of aim every time but every shot was a vastly different result sometimes by as much as 2 feet off. Had about a 3-5mph cross wind which I'm not sure if that starts to play a factor at 40 yards. Out of roughly 30 attempts I had two that hit within 6" of the bullseye I was aiming at. But I aimed at the same bullseye and shot the same way every time same as I did at the closer distances. Do you have any idea what could be going on here? Is it just shooter error?
@bluecollaroutdoors5556
@bluecollaroutdoors5556 2 жыл бұрын
Joseph, it is hard to say exactly what is causing the inconsistency without seeing it in person. Anything from jerking shots slightly, target panic, arrow issues, torque on the bow with the grip, these are just a few of many things it could be. It is surprising but yea the extra 10 yards can make it more challenging for sure. My first suggestion would be to make sure your bow is tuned properly (paper tuned) this will ensure it is not an issue with the bow. Second I would make sure you arrows are all the same and matched to your draw weight and length, and in good condition. Next, I would suggest working on your shooting form starting with a relaxed grip. Hopefully this helps man, lots of variables that go into this.

My question is say for example I bought a bow a month ago and I’ve been working at getting it sighted in but let’s say it’s zeroed in and ready to go, should you shoot it a while before hunting with it (if you haven’t shot before) or just go hunt. I myself would get it sighted in and shoot it a while before i go to the stand or blind. I don’t want to rush things and make a bad shot. I’m just kinda curious to see what everyone says.

If your nervous on shooting a deer or whatever your hunting right away. Try practicing on wild pigs. I live in Texas and those bastards are all over my feeder everyday. I don’t have a bow yet. Hopefully looking at maybe getting one tomorrow. But that’s what I would do. No better way of practicing on a live target.

Glad to have you part of the channel brother, it’s all good I still find myself struggling with compound bow from time to time because I just don’t normally have time to focus on practicing. Glad to hear you got the 20 yard pin sighted in, that 30 and definitely 40 yard one can be tough. The biggest issue with shooting the longer distances is the ability to hold the bow steady and to not get target panic with the shot. This is the main reason I switched over to using a crossbow because without time to practice I didn’t want to chance a bad shot on a big buck. I’m planning on using the bow for some does after I get my first buck tag filled. If you have any questions let me know man, thanks again for checking out the channel!
