You're a really underrated teacher because you're very good! Every video on runs I've seen has either never broken it down like this or they didn't explain it well enough. But this helped me a lot so thank you!

Tried this aloud once and already noticed a difference! I have played violin for about 24 years, and I'd say runs with your voice is like practicing sixteenth runs on an instrument, only I never thought of it that way before. Great video!

I think it's because everyone tries to explain it in their own way. But to actually see if visually definitely makes more connections with the brain therefore having more success in doing these runs. Seeing it visually definitely makes it easier on the brain .

Thank you for this! Most people feel that it's harder to do ascending runs but that's not my case. I suck with descending because my lower register is kinda weak and most tutorials focus on ascending.

Way to go! this gotta be one of the best tutorials out there, and you seem very experienced at teaching, I don't think I have seen anyone demonstrate runs the way you just did, I liked the stairs example and how you use midi/piano, really creative..this needs more views To all those out there trying to riff, even if you think you fail at it and can't do it at all "Trust me, you can" it just takes practice, it's like a new workout for your muscle (vocal cords) some have more agility and are faster naturally and thus learn faster, but even if you're on the slow side, if you're determined and consistent on the training you'll will reach a point where you can execute some beautiful and innovative riffs and be proud of yourself *In this exercise go step by step, when you reach a point of it starting to get fast for you pause the video and slightly rewind a bit before and start over, keep repeating until it becomes easier also check out Natalie Weiss's "Breaking down the riffs" (#BTDR) she's really good

She is really good, and those excersises are extremely useful, I'm sure, but... they are too difficult for me. That's why searching for smt simpler to start with. And this one is good, just wish there were more. But even here my notes are not as dissociated as I wish they were, when i speed it up...

My problem is it still sounds sloppy, the notes aren't as dissociated as I wish they were. Do I just keep practicing because that's my problem for every run. Like Christina Aguilera (sorry for the very obvious reference) does runs where every note is so tong and so incredibly spot on dissociated from the others that you hear them all perfectly and yet so fast. Can you get that type of dissociation from your practice video if we do it every day? Thks!

+axelle32 I'm no vocal coach. I'm not even that good a vocalist to be perfectly honest, but on every other instrument I've learned the key to playing clean and fast is to start out slow. Just do it slowly, as slow as it possibly takes to make the transition sound nice, and try not to get there too fast. I can imagine experimenting with compression is also useful to really get that "choppier" sound. Most important thing to remember is that it does take time, unfortunately it won't happen over a week or so. Playing and singing is, after all, a lifelong practise and you will always get better just as long as you keep it up, and stick to your own voice. And vocal exercises are very good (I just happen to be very bad at doing them), but I find it very useful to try and incorporate the exercises into songs. Just sit around playing and singing and maybe noodle in some vocal run in a few places, just for practise. That's the most fun way to do it, but hardly the most efficient.

keeping the notes together and doing the runs is harder than stacatto runs, legato runs are difficult. ex. mariah carey and her operatic trills and legato runs
