My Website: chrisliepe.com
I've been asked for more tips on this subject for awhile now so I thought it was time I delivered!
Here's the scenario:
-You have a song you want to sing
-You love the way it sounds in the original key but it's too high for you to sing well.
-Every time you try, you tense up and sound strangled .
-You can hit most or all of the notes in the song in isolation or with a less complicated melody.
-As soon as you try to sing in context, you lose all composure and get discouraged!
Well... I've done a new video exactly addressing this struggle and how we can sing songs meant for higher voices, even though we have a lower natural voice than the singer in the song! (AND MAKE IT SOUND REALLY GOOD)
For this example, I chose to sing a song by a female artist and demonstrate how to approach the original key, melody and phrasing in a healthy and great sounding way!

I think Adam Lambert likes to sing in an uncomfortable high range for most men, but he sings so comfortably and freely whatever resonance he uses. He'll also emphasize certain notes too with different resonances. It's a very dynamic performance when the ceiling for range is higher, because you have more choices for resonance placement. It is no wonder, the cover of Complicated by Chris is very dynamic also

Play, slow down, repeat, change key, repeat, shorten, call and answer, only vowels, isolate part!! OMG! so cool and so helpful! DUH! I never thought about any of this stuff before. This is so so exciting to play with. Thank you so much! Can't wait to try it on a song that I'm working on. Wooooo!

Maaan! First things first: KZfaq NEEDS you to create a new channel posting your covers! I've always thought this, but after these recent videos (especially when you covered Linkin Park), I'm just insanely curious to see the full versions of your covers! About the video: I really needed a video on this topic! I feel like I can get a mixed coordination right in some vowels (if theres a phrase like "yeeeeeeeeah"), but when there are changing vowels and consonants involved (especially in faster tempo), the coordination just seems to "reset"...I'll definetly try this approach from now on! Thank you!

I think instead of another channel, I might just do a big Soundcloud. I'm not sure I want to put in the work to do full cover videos... (more video editing and I already do a TON). Plus, people could just stream them one after another that way. Thoughts?

@@chrisliepe Ohh yeah! In your case (as you do A LOT of videos here), going for sound only would be a lot more practical! I really hope you can do this! Your voice is too great and I feel everyone here would love to hear you sing! If you decide to do this, please let us know! I've decided to do videos lately, because it gives me more input on my issues (as I'm far from having a really solid technique)...but it's A LOT OF WORK syncing audio/video and it forces me to use one full take, even when there are parts I didn't like so much.

Darren Hayes "Insatiable" is this exact thing for me. The pre-chorus is also a little above what my headvoice can do. The chorus I can sing but it constantly flips from head to chest and is breathy as hell. It's girly headvoice to sensual neutral six times in like 20 seconds. It's basically yodeling in a latex bunny outfit haha. Gonna try your tips and see if that does anything. If I can find my ears.

Also, sometimes it is a production question why you would choose the same key (i.e. fundamental frequency range). I for one purposely chose to record a series of covers in the original key for the challenge. I don't feel dumb at all. It just takes a lot of vocal training in my case. A lot. But I am getting better by doing this

Every one of these lesson videos has something to take away. I love the way you talk about how a song feels in your mouth/head - for me, it was like a lightbulb moment. Instead of trying to "hit notes" based on how they sound, I find it much easier to aim for how they feel, and trust that that will make the pitch right.

Sometimes i think, especialy about Cornel that he was not practicing much and i feel bad about my skills, because i think that prcticing will not get me to "that" high mountains which i want and dream of..

Did you ever tested this before getting a bass/baritone/tenor/alto and soprano all together in one person😄. Because of sort of destructed career as a instrumentalist during the pandemic I just thought “why not sing a bit”, lets take a look on YT. I think your voice is born a bit higher than mine…so the examples are not all in my range of possibility? Still love your style!

How do you cover the topic Avril and Kurt in the same time I look into their songs to try what my voice can do? It's scary lol. My Happy Ending was sooo weird and high for me, and that extremely high part during the later half of the song is soo hard to hit "sounding right". If people say: "You're dumb to try it in the original key"...No! I want it. Therefore I will do all I can to train and learn how to do it right and safely. That's my approach to all crafts and skills in life. I'm a tenor though. Would you consider doing a few dedicated videos about singing in higher or lower "offset" ranges that are not really outside our range, but like Avril Lavigne, pretty far away from our comfortable base range throughout the entire song? PS: The backing vocal harmonies in Complicated are super 50s sounding to me, I didn't expect that when I heard the isolated track, I never really heard that in the full mix.

You just put a stop to it. Gradually, and when you’re ready, you trust yourself and stop at that point. You let there be just a little bit of air left in your abdominals, you don’t want to finish it completely before your next inhale for the next phrase. Each time you’re singing a phrase you’re exhaling out air in a very imperceptible manner, you’re not letting a lot of it out. You’re using the abdominal muscles to hold out as your stomach is gradually coming back in. The whole point of support is to resist the inward natural movement by trying your best to hold it out.

@@chrisliepe Yup, already saw that, which is why I asked. To me, head voice comes with closure, whereas falsetto has very loose closure, and is distinctly different from head voice, as your other video you shared explains so well. Cheers!
