Tyler Joseph's blend of unique emotional abandon, precision, range and dynamics combined with that bright and playful vibe make up one of the most unique and compelling voices in todays music. Let's unpack his style using short studio recording examples. We'll learn from him, practice singing some lines like he would and then be inspired in our own singing along the way!

I'm not even a singer. I'm a drummer, but I still watch every one of your videos because your approach to dissecting, understanding and implementing musical techniques translates into so many aspects of my life and teaching drums. And also I love hearing you sing and learning about different types of singing. It's just super entertaining and educational no matter what. Keep it up! I also have some fun drum videos on my channel if you're ever interested. Keep it up! I love what you're doing.

Brother! Talk about perfect pitch. When you're experimenting with your vocals, it's extremely accurate. I swear it's almost as if there was a vocal analyzer. Your lesson style is exceedingly engaging, and the over exaggeration of the concepts is useful for all listeners to understand. Absolutely nailed it!

So has he always been able to do vocal fry naturally? In the song called “save ” by Tyler Joseph he screams like that and that was like maybe in his early 20’s or high school days. He does it around the 1:26 mark in the song

This was really exceptional. TLDFR! I am a fanatic for this specific band and man, and I felt like you explained his vocal attitude on this album so very well and this was detailed and helpful and really accessible! I would adore a brief series of comparison videos of Tyler Joseph's vocal choices from his different albums. For example, in his early work, he used a very exaggerated 'cry', plus a huge dose of 'whine', and a very crunchy vocal fry when in his most comfortable range for 'softer' tones (as versus a Bruce Springsteen crunchy semi-yelling singing, he was almost using a child-like or intentionally male pubescent-type crying/cracking voice that was, seemingly, able to be heard in it's resonance, at the same time it almost only seemed to exist in the inch or two between his lips and the microphone). As a result, every vulnerable phrase he would sing would carry this incredible intimacy and personable quietness, as if he and the listener were sharing whispered secrets under a blanket late into a long night. As if he were sitting in the center of a natural amphitheater and speaking or singing sotto voce to himself, and almost weeping simultaneously. All of the techniques I have written about above, were very evident on a few songs from the Self-Titled album and also on Vessel (& Regional at Best, although the mixing and production on that demo really 'stole' a lot of his different vocal abilities, because it's almost too difficult to discern his voice..which should be expected being as he did most of the production himself with substandard equipment). Later on, after the album you chose samples from for this video, which are all from Blurryface, his voice really flowered. On Trench, and most especially on the remixes, the reimaginings of certain songs, the acoustic renditions, and so on, you can see that he has removed a lot of the endearing techniques that were hiding his true voice, and he plays with skills I don't know if he had the confidence to employ before. In particular, there is a video called 'Tyler Joseph strips down their hits, the Storyteller performance'..something similar. Its brilliant. I think you, being such a talented technician yourself would thoroughly enjoy it. I apologize for the lengthy post. I just really learned so much and was so pleasantly surprised and impressed with your abilities, I just had to share. Muchlove, suki

They have a lot of screaming, but the cleans are amazing, especially songs like Stålfågel, Full Moon Shoals, As We Speak, and Nerve.
