How do you go from distorted singing into a low growl? What about singing rhythmic, staccato gritted-up lines with lots of words?
In Static-X's Push It, Wayne demonstrates amazing aggressive agility. The studio performance fully captures the roundtable vocal approach of some of the band's finest live performances and we get to dive into the isolated vocals of this amazing track!
Join me as I dissect vocal lines that sound like two different vocalists had to have done them when in fact, Wayne is masterfully switching tonalities on the fly. We'll also discuss how he relied on his bandmates live to do certain call-and-answer lines (live). It's an interesting track to dissect!
You'll get to learn a bit about the studio production too! --Some juicy doubling and delay tricks. Enjoy!

Yea he's definitely one of the greats. Lots of good tips in this video for vocals in general, but I think Wayne used mostly false chords instead of true chords in pretty much everything he did. The "I see it, I need it" scream section is a great example of that, and that technique wasn't really talked about or used here. Melissa Cross had a great DVD about it years ago. Think it was called The Art of Screaming.

Hands down Wayne Static is just one of the most, if not THE MOST underrated vocalists in the metal genre. To go from his scream/melodic scream(kinda like Anders from in flames), to his growl. It's just idk it's a breath of fresh air. And granted the replacement it's about as close to Wayne Static as we are gonna get which I'm happy with. But Wayne Static will just go down as one of the greats in my opinion. Miss you Wayne!

The "I see it, I need it" part is so nuts. Chris says do it clean and hits Chris Cornell pitches, which I can no way do yet, and then says to add grit. That is hard and will have to come back to this video in 8 or 9 years lol.
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 2 жыл бұрын
haha... ya there's lots going on here and lots to think about for sure! But if you can isolate the different aspects of what he's doing, and even try doing some of these things with LOWERED pitches first, you'll be able to build up to it while practicing the other techniques. Don't let "can't hit the pitch" keep you from discovering some of the other aspects of his singing... (I say this as someone who used to do that)

The main reason I like Wayne's vocals is simply because that even though he shouting, it doesn't sound like he's shouting. He's just singing. There is plenty of apparent note changes to make the melody, and it still comes across as clean. You can still hear clearly what the lyrics are. Practically everybody else can't get the same effect without making a muddy guttural sound, where it's just pure scream, and no notes, and feels like there's obvious strain on the vocal chords. Wayne's technique is above all else.

God I love Static X even after 24 years. I just got to see them a few weeks ago and what a completely amazing set/performance was. I am lucky enough to have gotten the chance to see them before Wayne's passing and I know some don't care for Edsel Dope doing the vocals as Xer0, but he did a phenomenal job with filling the role for this tour. His vocals were almost fully replicated and it really shows that Edsel is putting all his energy and passion into making it right for the fans and the band. He isn't trying to be Wayne, but he is 100% just doing it for the love of it.

But for me already being a musician, and one who is mainly self taught, I really appreciate your style here. This is such a great album. So much amazing production, and Wayne Static was a one of a kind musician that can't be truly replicated (although his replacement is fine). Whoever decided Wayne Static should be one of the guys that sings one of the original songs on the Queen of the Damned soundtrack (probably Jonathon Davis if I had to guess) was a genius with their finger on the pulse of metal music at the time. Wayne Static isn't necessarily a typical "singer" but using your voice to make incredible rhythmic sounds is just as awesome as being able to hit high notes and keep pitch. It's just a different kind of musical genius. One that gets less attention, but is just as impressive.

I keep loose track of how many times an artist is mentioned or asked for and try to give priority to the ones that are mentioned or commented on most frequently.
