Much of this is EXACTLY what my first music teacher taught me for vocalizing, including opera. Keeping that open throat pallet "yawn"ing perspective until I had mastered both head voice and frontal phonic composure.

I'm finally starting to develop the muscle memory to sing with my throat in the onset-of-yawn position! This is really exciting because I wasn't able to coordinate my muscle to do that, earlier in my life. I think it helps that my core muscles are getting stronger. I started doing the UPWARD DOG yoga pose, and it's helped me to open up my chest and hips, as well as strengthen my core muscles, which is correcting my posture (lifelong slumper). ONE asana is having such a beautiful domino effect...yay! :D It's also made my headstands strong, and what's cool is that it takes no time at all (a minute, max). I'd highly recommend that singers do yoga/calisthenics to strengthen their bodies, since singing is a type of physical workout in itself.

As a person studying to be a classical singer this helps me so much! I always was taught to sing with a really open throat. But this feels so much better. I sound less hoot now.

This works SO well. I have done the yawn onset before (before I started using your lessons) but you explain it so well in order to open the voice up and I find my resonance is much greater too. In fact, I have to try a tone it down a bit now! Thanks a lot as always Freya. You're a gem.

This video has four years and it happened to be the most helpful for my situation right now 😆 I'm singing in an opera choir, I know the basics but never studied opera singing and i needed to improve my sound because I'm feeling really insecure and my throat more restrained than ever after the pandemic. I obviously don't sound like that 😂 but i just rediscovered the voice i started with, even better! thank you so much!!!

this is exactly what my teacher has been trying to teach me and I've been somewhat confused and troubled. So your video is very timely. I"I'm so glad I just found but boy it would have been even better to find it a few weeks ago lol.

I find this lesson REALLY useful. The difference can be felt when the jaw is fully relaxed. I am aiming very high now in my quest for improvement and the really high notes, and I mean pretty seriously high, are now becoming second nature. I love the variations you teach in this video for those high notes. Many thanks Freya.

It would be helpful to see a video about how to keep a bright "ee" sound when singing high. As I sing higher (around and above an A5) it becomes harder to achieve the openness and resonance while still sounding like "ee". Is there a trick to getting this sound, or enunciating in general, while singing high?

Lowering your larynx doesn’t have to make it dark. It depends on your vocal placement. You can make your voice bright while lowering your larynx and not hurt your vocal folds. My vocal coach taught me it is wise to lower your larynx and use more back muscle. Also. Open you mouth more while hitting high notes it makes it sound like you’re screeching when you sing then.
@caraisadoramckinney4562

Thank you! Exactly what I was going to say. “Pushing” the larynx down is bad, baritones do that a lot. The larynx should drop/relax down with the breath, proper understanding of appoggio. An very old Italian technique you can do is called the laryngeal tilt. This is where the relatively low larynx tilts or rocks slightly foward and down.

Ok woe it does work lol. I can sing pretty high but this helps it to be more natural and real sounding. Less strained.

Do I get vibrato on the high notes this way, or is there something else what I should do also. I can get only straight tone sometimes really tight sounding sometimes a bit more relaxed sounding, but never an actual vibrato. (Or sometimes I get this awful tremolo D:)
@salkagreen9372
@salkagreen9372 7 жыл бұрын
Also when you say that the larynx shouldnt be lowered do you mean that it shouldn't be pushed down but that it should be still relatively low, so it doesn't jump really high when you sing high notes or is this jumping action allowed? I try to keep it neutral (like when you swallow and feel it jumping up and then goes back down, thats about how low I try to keep it) but even though my larynx doesn't jump really really high anymore when I try to sing high but I can still feel my throat closing and tightening and I've tried the "high sigh" -exercise for several months but I still can't open up and relax my throat compeletely. And I've been taking singing classes for 5 years but my throat is always the problem, even in the middle range sometimes, how do I fix this, it feels like I've tried everything... :(

You do realize that opening your throat is actually a form of darkening your voice and lowering your larynx? You're just not doing it directly. I understand if you think you that these are healthier ways, I agree. But lowering the larynx is not a bad idea, it just depends on how you do it.
