Today, we’re going to talk about singing really low. So if you’ve ever felt like you’ve wanted to sing really low, but couldn’t quite get there, it’s my hope that by the end of today’s video, you’ll be singing those low notes with ease. Just like it’s twin video, “How to sing really high” the trick to singing really low is vocal chord position. If you’re interested in learning about singing really high, I will include the link for that video below.
But back to vocal chord position. If we were to peek inside your larynx, we would see that it is diamond in shape and that your vocal chords are stretched across it in a V shaped position. When you sing low, the entire larynx changes shape so that the chords can contract and thicken. When you sing high, the larynx lengthens and stretches the chords to thin out. Kind of like a rubber band. This is why I am always emphasizing the importance of staying relaxed when you sing. So that the larynx can change it shape, and the chords can freely vibrate without any influence from the exterior muscles.
There are 3 sounds that you can play with that will keep your chords connecting for some really awesome low notes.
1. The glottal stop.
This is a very small unit of sound that brings the chords together quickly. Take your time to register the feeling of space or complete relaxation before you being playing with this sound. This will ensure that your compensating muscles stay out of the way, and you are isolating only the chords on the inside.
2. Drinking water sound.
This sound is considered extreme…. so only use it in moderation. But it’s a quirky little sound as if you are pretending to drink water. So close your mouth, and all the space inside your mouth. Isolate your feeling to the larynx, and see if you can vocalize that sound of drinking water. This crazy little sound releases the larynx if it has lifted, as well as allows the chords to connect in a very deep way. So that the resulting tone has more depth to it. But remember, it’s not necessary to do this sound all the time. It is considered extreme as far as vocal chord connections go, so play in moderation.
3. The vocal fry.
This whacky sound sounds like a creaky door opening or closing. It’s the smallest unit of sound that our chords can make. It sounds so crazy to use, because we slow the airflow down so much that we can hear each oscillation of the chord. This is our champion sound for being able to learn really low notes. For our exercise with the vocal fry, we are going to slide from a comfortable low note to an unfamiliar low note. (See video for demonstration.) The instance you feel the tiniest bit of pressure applied to your chords, that’s when you slip into the vocal fry. Keep sliding into new depths of lower notes using the vocal fry to explore and develop that note. The vocal fry will take all that pressure off the larynx, and allow the chords to have the opportunity to explore that new vocal chord position.
There you have it! 3 easy sounds that will show you how to sing really low. I hoped you liked this video! Please feel free to give it a thumbs up, or click the subscribe button below for more singing tips and vocal tricks. If you have any questions, please be sure to leave them in the comments portion of today’s video. I can’t wait to hear from you! Thanks for watching! I’ll see you next time!

This is why when I wake up I can sing one whole octave lower for about twenty minutes and after that I literally lose that octave.

@@Kenny...... Support your fry and you'll do strohbass, which is subharmonics, similar in sound to kargyraa, but with a different way to produce the sound. You have your note and a perfect fifth below that, which, both combined, produce half the frequency of your initial note, so the note one octave below. Strohbass can expand one's range from a fourth to a sixth depending on the mastery of the technique. Bass2Yang is a channel where you can see what it sounds like when done well, and how it sounds really different from chest register. But neither vocal fry or strohbass are morning voice. My personal morning voice is fully modal, and can grant me from 2 semitones to 6 semitones depending on how well I slept (so not an octave at all, although if I compare normal modal range to morning strohbass range, I guess that's close to a full bonus octave, but that doesn't count). In morning voice, my strobass/fry range also expands by that much.

I know this is a year old, but with your exercises I was able to sing deeper than I ever thought possible! A2! More importantly, I was able to sing the D and E above that with strength and clarity instead of getting breathy and weak. I thought it would take me months or years to expand my vocal range, but I guess I just needed to warm up properly. Thanks so much!!

+Dillon Hartwig its not usual, but not uncommon either, i bottom out anywhere between G0 and C-4sih, even with perfect pitch, basicaly throw it out the window when you go into negative octaves, since you cant actualy hear the note and only the vibrations lol.

At 10:13 you didn't just go into fry, you went down an octave (to bass low F)... Sounds to me that some of your fry is like down in basso profundo notes.. which is an interesting demonstration of how low fry goes, as you don't have a naturally low-sounding voice (though obviously basso profundos sing those notes with chest voice...).

Nice lesson. I discovered my vocal fry on my own some time ago but understanding how it works was less complete before I watched your video. Many people post videos who really don't know much of what they are talking about. It was refreshing to find yours since you obviously do. I'm a very low bass, I write my own songs for non commercial use and I'm trying to find a well trained vocal coach who appreciates the concept of a lead bass acapella singer instead of the traditional "3 tenors and a bass drone" old school ideaology.

This video's amazing! Thanks for sharing such a creative way to practice our singing. I've been having classes for a while now, and your voice got me really inspired. I think I've never seen a girl singing lower than C3 before. I found out recently that I'm a mezzo, and since then I've been trying to improve my low notes like crazy. My vocal coach told me that this is probably the least common vocal range type among girls (since they are more likely to be sopranos), which gave me an unique feeling I kinda fell in love with by the time. I get a little disappointed to know that I can barely reach an E3 tho... I wonder if I'll ever get to do the central C right. :(

these, and clicks, are what we used to play with as children.. Changing pitch, as when tuning a sting, smooth run, up or down.

Have you heard of Kargyraa? If so, what are your thoughts about it? I've heard some really low notes using this effect, and I could reach B0 by doing so. It's often used in a singing style called Khoomei, from the region of Tuva (Russia/Mongolia)

I went from being stuck to high tenor notes. To singing low baritone notes. Thank you!

What was that last pitch, anyway? I'm one of those women who can sing really low (I can easily sing baritone, as well as most bass parts), and managed to make it all the way down there.

I’m aiming for contralto after finding my love for bass just recently. Right now my lowest note is a C3 while I can ‘growl’ at an F1. Nothing special, but I’d love to be able to sing subharmonics. Finding it difficult as I’m only 13 years old, but I’m having a lot of fun with it :)
