Hello and thank you for your informative video. Is it possible to use a smaller sump pump with a smaller line for smaller sump pit inflows? I find 1/3HP might be a bit too much. Thank you for your time.
@PowerEquipmentDirect

Possibly. Every application has slightly different needs based on pipe lift height and runoff distance. Not all pits are sized the same either, and different pipe diameters are sometimes used in different areas where local codes may vary. The point is, you don't want to under-size a pump because it will run too often and burn out quicker. Having a pump slightly more powerful than your needs isn't a bad thing, either. While we'd need to get more information to properly size a pump for you, generally most residential applications have a 1/3-1/2HP pump sweet spot for most "average" home pit applications.

Last night we noticed out sump stopped working/burned up. We have been in the house for a month so not sure how old the pump was. In doing some investigating we noticed that the wash machine drains into a utility sink which then appears to run horizontally under the basement floor and into the sump pit. Given this, do I need to up my HP for the new sump - I was originally thinking 3/4 HP for the new one. The vertical lift is about 9 ft, then runs horizontal about 8 ft to the septic and then out to the septic a TBD length. The pipe is 1.5" D. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Hello, it really doesn't matter that much if the washing machine and utility sink drain into that pit as that's fairly common. If the pump that was installed lasted for a minimum 5-7 years, they will be fine with installing/replacing with the same or comparable pump. If you can provide a model# or HP rating, we can point you in the right direction with a suggestion or two, but to do this, you'll need to call in and speak to our product specialists. You're on the right track with having some of the right information already. You can quickly estimate by using our sizing tool, and give us a call for more details. www.sumppumpsdirect.com/stories/1496-How-to-Easily-Size-a-Primary-Sump-Pump.html

Hi I'm from South Africa Looking for some advice. I want to purchase a sump pump to use it for a greywater system. I know that's not it's intended use but we do try conserve as much water as possible. I want to put the sump pump into a storage tank that will collect laundry and shower water and then connect it to a short hose to pump it out onto my lawn. My question is can I install a valve of sorts in the outlet line if I find that the water flow is too high. I don't want the sprinkler to overthrow onto my paving. Do let me know your thoughts. Thanks

It all depends on what you're connecting that hose to, and the sprinkler requirements. Sump pumps don't generally provide much pressure and that pressure might be required to operate the sprinkler. If you can call in and share how high and how far (in feet) you're pumping the water and the GPM & PSI requirements for the sprinkler, we can see what pumps we might be able to suggest for you. We'd also need to know your voltage and hertz requirements for that pump.

The city is moving the 6" main from a location outside of the city limits to a location inside the city limits; the new location is up-hill from our existing sewage system; it's on us to install a sewage lift station to connect to the new city main. The contractor I spoke to states that I need to spend about $5K on my sewage lift station. Can't I go to Menards and purchase the product they have on the shelf? It's 1/2 horse with grinder and 70 gallon basin; 2" discharge? Do these require a septic tank in addition to the sump tank?

We will not make recommendations or consult against your city/state governments. You need to go through the proper certified channels within your city and follow all code requirements. The local/state codes will tell you all of the information you're asking about. If the city has no requirements for what you need to use, you have many choices as long as the correct metrics are used to size the pump you choose and will handle your lift requirements.

I live near the marsh in Florida near the Atlantic ocean. When it rains, we get some flooding in the backyard and need to install a sump pump. I have a 30 inch basin and will push the water approximately 50 feet. The vertical to pump the water is no more than a one foot and the piping is 1.5 inch. I tried a 1/3 hp pump and when it rained heavy for about 10 minutes, the pump could not keep up and the basin overflooded. Would you recommend I use a 1/2 hp or maybe as big as 1 hp? Thank you.

We would need to know the square footage of the affected area or area contributing to this flooding and if it is all dirt/grass, all cement or a combination. Is there anyway to figure out how much water you expect to get before buying the sump pit? I guess I’m going to buy 24 inch diameter culvert pipe and cut it to 5 feet tall, and the drill holes in it and bury it. I’ll put the pump out door about 2 feet below the footer. I guess I just have to dig my hole, and then look at it in a rainstorm event. I figure a 24 inch 5 foot tall pipe is over engineered enough that it should work. But maybe it will only get wet two times a year during heavy rains. Live in TN

Really there's no way to tell. Check with your local municipality to see if they have any info on water tables in your location location but I always say, you can NEVER oversize your sump pit.

Hello I want to replace my 1/3 hp pentair hydromatic WA1 10 sump pump which is 7 years old with a liberty 253 1/3 horsepower model. My sump pit is 14” wide and 20.5” deep. My discharge pipe is from the bottom of pit vertically 33”, horizontally 17”, back to vertical 48”, and then at an angle of 16”, and finally horizontally to the outside of home about 45” inches give or take which goes into a discharge line outside that I have buried underground. Is the liberty pump I want to install equipped to do the job with what I got going on?

Can you use it to drain a swimming pool
@PowerEquipmentDirect
@PowerEquipmentDirect Жыл бұрын
Sump pumps are not really the best choice for pool draining. Most pools have a pump/drain valve. But if you need something different, you should look into submersible utility pumps, which will be a much faster solution: www.waterpumpsdirect.com/pumps/submersible-utility-pumps.html Learn More: www.waterpumpsdirect.com/stories/272-How-to-Pick-the-Perfect-Submersible-Water-Pump.html

3:13 I get that you don't want to oversize the pump because it's a waste and costs more, but to say it's going to cycle more often and burn out, doesn't make sense. Does it create more water?
@PowerEquipmentDirect
@PowerEquipmentDirect Жыл бұрын
When you oversize a pump, yes, it pumps more gallons per minute and it pumps more often, meaning it's using more electricity. On pumps with mechanical switches, those switches are also working faster and every time they turn on, that spark at the switch contact heats up. And the constant sparking doesn't do the switch contacts any favors, and is typically the main point of failure. You can also think of putting a 1/2HP sump pump that can do over 50GPM in a 5-gallon bucket...you'll be bottoming out the bucket many more times in a 24-hr period than with a smaller pump, granted the flow of water into the bucket is consistent between the two pumps. When you have a larger basin that holds more water, the ratio of that amount of water to what the pump can produce is less important. That's another reason that we always say, you don't want to oversize the pump but you can ALWAYS oversize the basin.

@@PowerEquipmentDirect So say the water situation in my area would fill my crock at 20 gallons an hour. In two scenarios I have either a small pump or a large pump. In boths casea I will set the float to the same level, so either will pump 20 gallons per cycle. Using the small pump, it runs for 20 seconds on the hour. Using the large pump, it runs for 15 seconds on the hour. Neither will run more often than the other because the supply of water coming into the crock is 20 gallons per hour. The large pump doesn't magically have more water to pump before the next interval. Other than some technical difference of ground water possibly trickling in faster during the 5 second difference, which seems insanely irrelevant, I don't see why "it pumps more often".

Interesting discussion. I've always heard that cycling the pump on and off is what kills the pump. Ideally you should have the largest basin feasable and set the switch to turn on when the water is very high in the basin and off when very low. I am very curious to see what is the optimal " run" time for most sump pumps is. Thanks for the input.
