How to Sketch #2: Tools & Tips

Introduction
Today, We are going to be talking about some quick tips on how to improve your sketches in architecture. As you can see, I have already prepared my workstation.
Tools
For this video, we will be using a Pencil, Pen, an Eraser and an architect's scale ruler. It is very wise to keep it simple when it comes to sketches. And that includes your tools.
A Visual Idea
When I think of a Sketch, I see an idea expressed in its most honest and crude way. An unrefined, unprocessed drawing. And that is what it should be. Don't worry about your lines being perfect. That is not the intention here. We need a quick visual idea.
Size
I have come to notice that those first idea sketches are best drawn small. Making a small sketch lets you quickly express your idea. Then you can take it to a bigger size.
Style
When it comes to sketching, Everyone has their own style. But their are some line styles that mostly every architect seems to agree on.
Overlapping Lines
When it comes to expressing and idea quickly you should not be worrying on connecting your lines perfectly. That's where the overlapping comes to play. By overlapping your lines you create a consistent sketch. How much you overlap your lines depends on you
Profile Lines
It's very easy to lose depth in a sketch. That is why, drawing your profile lines is important. Profile lines give depth and makes the sketch pop out from your sketchbook.
Continuous Lines
It is very important that those lines are continuous, When we start to sketch, we tend to draw back and forward with short lines till we get to the end.
Construction Lines
That confidence in sketch could be helped by working with construction lines. Use a lighter pencil or another color and draw your strokes very softly. These lines serve as a guide. There is no need to erase these lines, just draw over them. This layering of lines help to understand certain decisions in the final sketch. Hey and it looks good.
Line Types
As some of us know and others will learn, each line type transmits certain information.
Dashed Lines - Represents an overhang or something that is not seen in the sketch. It also represents a movement, for example, the swing of a door.
Center Lines - dot dash dot. It is used to represent structural grids, road centers, amongst others.
Hatch Lines - These are many small dashes that depending on the direction, it communicates something different, Contours, Shadows, Vegetation and Textures. Even People can be sketched using Hatch lines.
Notes and Indicators
Do to the fact that we are making visual ideas, in some case we tend make annotations and indicators in our drawings. For example, indicate a material, a movement our even an experience. Anything necessary that helps with understanding the sketch.

This is your project catalyst. the architectural sketch is the first and most important drawing. It ignites and sustains your idea. So it is very important that you practice your sketching. Keep a sketchbook in your car , in your backpack. Get and Ipad as your digital sketchbook, anything necessary for you to practice your sketching. Mix it up, use colors, use different medias like grey paper.
