In this video I'll be showing you how to sketch a girl from a photo with pencil. This is a real time tutorial where I talk through each step. I'll be using two black pencils for line work and shading. A soft pencil for the line work and dark shading as well as a harder pencil for the lighter shading on the skin. This sketch was completed under 20 minutes as my aim was to keep it loose and expressive. I hope you enjoy it!

I love your way of sketching the beginning. And it actually helped me improve my portraits a lot. It is much easier than drawing different geometric forms ( i know they are important to learn the proportions, but I know those)

That was so much fun, amazing what you can create with just a few different pencils, also such good training for portraiture in oils and other mediums. The nose is always a challenge I find, getting a convincing form, and getting the nasal openings right. Just got to keep practicing I guess.

Love your technique. Lovely face. However you missed her long faceline, the face is to round if you are interested. I drew her myself along with you and was surprised you didn’t pick it up. Do you see where you missed it when you analyse? I always try to improve so if you have that same ambition this feedback might help. It is not meant to be disapproving or negative. I admire your enormous talent in drawing but also in teaching. So grateful for what you give to the world!

I did the same reference photo, and mine looks like she is demonic took me at least an hour and 20 min to finish with details, glad to see there is more simplistic approach

You know I try to draw it because so I will know how to draw like that and how to shade it and the result is it looks like a girl but not the same at least to me it's pretty and even I don't get it like that I'm happy and just be patient and just practicing it I love scott.

Yes! I draw with charcoal or black pencil mostly because it’s easy to see on camera😉. Graphite can reflect a bit.

the dark shadows can look very black and bold. I don't think my pencil can make it that thick. what pencil did you use?

I’m using a Conté à Paris Pierre Noire 3B sketching pencil. It’s like a soft charcoal pencil but pretty expensive. I also use Generals charcoal pencils which also very dark.

I use a few different charcoal pencils. I used a Conté à Paris Pierre Noire here. I sharpen most of my pencils with a retractable blade as they break using a normal sharpener. hope that helps!
