In this sketching tutorial we'll be looking at how to sketch people quickly, using four simple rule or principles.
When we are sketching and urban sketching, we don't have long to sketch people. So we, of course, have to sketch quickly - and it can also feel or be a bit rude to stare at someone for a long time... so the solution... you got it, sketch people quickly!
We'll cover the flow of a figure, key proportions, using shapes and adding details.
And in all of this we will be sketching people quickly - like really really quickly.
I'll show you that these techniques work by doing a series of quick sketches from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

I can relate to this genre of sketching. I had no idea what I was doing, but began drawing this way many years ago. It’s so freeing, and when refined a bit, as you know, pretty darn accurate.

This was very interesting. I love drawing people. Its my favourite part of urban sketching. I'll often sit in foodcourts and just people watch. They are often so focused on their food they don't notice me. Rather than drawing faces I focus on the hair first. And try to capture the ear. With these 2 things I can capture the position of the head fairly well. Sometimes if they are wearing glasses I'll pop that in too. Or an interesting beard (which one could argue is also hair). I tend to leave the hands for last. As when they are eating they move their hands the most. I don't focus on anatomy. I focus on the movement in the fabric of clothes. Where is it draped? Where does it bunch up? I find this gives my sketches a feeling of movement. I don't know if you will see this comment. 8 days in. Somehow I missed the video when it posted. Also my sketching has gotten a lot faster since I've followed your process. I'm able to capture a lot more detail than before.

That was fun - I'll have to try that website Toby. As a thought, perhaps you could do another video (a bit like the one you did showing who inspires you) detailing any website or apps you use for sketching/painting (if there are any). Thanks Martin

Hi Martin - I like this idea! But I don't really use many apps sadly so it would be an empty video. I did have a think, but everything I use is actually basically social media and youtube or video editing orientated, and a bit functional and dry 😂📹

I've been drawing from KZfaq videos. Where people are showing a particular craft. Or discussing something that means they are facing the camera a lot. Older videos seem to be better. As editing becomes more fancy the longer people are on KZfaq.

Hello, Toby. Thank you for this tutorial. I've been needing something like this to get me to practice sketching more. I've done quick gesture drawings before with a pencil but never using a fountain pen. I feel it makes me be more loose in drawing. Cheers.

Interesting video & perspective, though all that hand waving is a bit much. I understand how artists SEE things, but I also know that as an artist - to much visual stimulation can be exhausting (and to much chatter) to deal with, before you actually get into the project. It's a good thing I can stop the video and come back to this later 🙂
