For clipless pedals, what amount of float do you prefer on your pedal cleat (0, 4.5 ,and 9 degrees)? I just got Look Keo Sprint pedals, and the 9 degrees is feeling loosy goosy? Any suggestions? Great video, as well.

I run 15:48 and it's pretty much impossible, at least with my sandpiper calves. been riding that ratio for 17 years in Boston traffic. Only the foolish don't run a rear brake. You can never know when a car will f' you up, and you won't have time/ distance for a skid. I know, I've have been hit with no time to react.
@voltag3man6 жыл бұрын
Rear brakes wont slow you down quick enough, you want front brakes only because your rear brakes will just slow you down not stop you, all your weight is in the back so no front brakes will not send you over the bars and if they do either lose some weight or adjust your brakes....
@timeslowingdown6 жыл бұрын
Front AND rear brake is the way to go, I think that's the message he's trying to get across. But yeah it defeats the purpose of riding fixed if you have two brakes, might as well add a freewheel at that point.

I run a blue tr250 with a front ellipse, I need to get a matching rear
@ultrasonicpriest8 жыл бұрын
where is your lockring then?
@freddybutler6748 жыл бұрын
sounds like the cog and lockring weren't tight enough in that setup. you ALWAYS NEED to have a lockring when you plan to skid (and in fixed gear riding in general to be safe), and your lockring should be tightened with an actual proper lockring tool, not by hand. Mavic Ellipses use a proprietary lockring, so a standard generic lockring will not thread properly. I would bet that was the cause of the stories you heard
@GXRM_8 жыл бұрын
Freddy Butler I always wondered about the lockring problem, thanks
@ultrasonicpriest8 жыл бұрын
Freddy Butler this. Even when simply backpedaling to reduce speed, the lockring must be tight. If you feel the pedals slip, even once, it may be enough to strip the hub. Really sucks if you have to learn this on a $300 wheel. Park Tool lockring spanner can be had for under $20. Hard forward pedaling will produce enough torque to tighten the cog.
@alienrefugee519 жыл бұрын
Finally got it happening a few weeks ago. I'm just using one strap atm on my right leg, which is my dominant leg, but instead of pushing down with it, I pull up with my dominant right leg and down with my left. I hear that if you only use one dominant leg that you will wear out your tires in the same spots.
@godismeme2729 жыл бұрын
alienrefugee51 It has to do with the gear ratio. There is some cart online that tells you how many skid patches you will have depending on your ratio. Do you think you could do this with no straps? like on a slick pavilion floor. I have no hills but i want to learn this. I hate straps. I like to jump a lot, they just restrict my feet too much. I've been trying to do a small bunny hop into it with mild success.
@alienrefugee519 жыл бұрын
GODis MEME I've had no luck trying to skid without straps, though I haven't tried to on a real slick surface either. I would think that straps would help with jumping as your feet are locked to the pedals and you can help lift the bike up with your feet?

@littlegoobie10 жыл бұрын
althought not specifically fixie related, i have some rims 15 years old. Get some good quality wheels built with proper double wall rims, stainless spokes, and decent hubs and they'll last a very long time. ...i ride up and down curbs and small flights of steps all day long. I break axles and spokes long before i damage the rims. I'm 220. my tires are 22 front and 25 on the rear so there's not much cushion there.

hey can i ask which one is easier to use pedals with toecage or shoes with cleats
@peterabbit118 жыл бұрын
Shoes and cleats will be easier once you learn how to use them. Pedals with straps (no cages) are easier to use if you want to wear normal shoes while riding. It really comes down to personal preference. If you go with clipless pedals (shoes + clippy pedal) use double sided ones like speedplay or Shimano SPD (or other mtb setup) because clipping into moving single sided pedals is very difficult.

+Philip Albuquerque My problem is the opposite of yours, i want my rear tire to pop up but i can't make it.
@Polioooo08 жыл бұрын
+Philip Albuquerque It could be because the tire has excellent traction? That would be my only guess.
@tatertot24845 жыл бұрын
did you guys ever figure this out? it’s called a pop-skid. It happens when you quickly come off your saddle while you simultaneously push down on your dominant pedal while simultaneously pulling up with your non-dominant pedal. It causes the rear wheel to “pop” off the ground. If you ever so slightly pedal forward as you “pop” off the ground, it’ll cause the rear wheel to bounce multiple times when it comes back to the ground. That’s how I stop quickly riding brakeless.

Alex Soto I also have 48x15 and S100s on fixed gear bike but this ratio is very difficult to skid with if you dont have the leg power. I would recommend using 48x17 or 48x18 in order to learn how to skid properly, then you could try out 48x15. This what i did when i started off riding a year ago and now I ride 48x15 and i could on that ratio properly.

@Polioooo08 жыл бұрын
+GODis MEME Yeah of course! You can skid without straps, but it would be a ton harder. It also depends on the ground, technique, strength,etc. If you have oily and wet asphalt, you can do a one leg skid anytime. Honestly though, skidding without foot retention is in my opinion, dangerous and not really efficient.

@MaeLSTRoM19978 жыл бұрын
+GODis MEME If you have no straps, it's a lot easier to do ball-to-stem skid. Basically you stand on your bike and lean forward, supporting your body weight over handlebar (and thus over the front wheel) and do the same thing. Even with straps some people prefer this because it takes weight off the rear wheel so it's supposed to be less damaging to the tire. Also, a long skidding will almost always be performed in that position (there's even a competition for this).
@LockedinCycling8 жыл бұрын
+GODis MEME Yeah, usually foot retention helps.

I like that you advise to use breaks. I find they look stupid on a mostly cleared bike ... but German police wants everyone to have two seperatly usable brakes, so we have no other chance to mount at least on front brake in addition.
@d.z.25509 жыл бұрын
Santa Dragon "at least" implies that it would be fine to run just with a front brake on a fixed gear in Germany. But it is not! In Germany, you have to mount a front and a rear brake. If you don't and they catch you, you get a fine plus penalization points in your driving license (as long as you have one)
@SantaDragon9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Zanetti Actually they discuss the problem, because in fact you need two from each other usable brakes. And if you have a front brake and the brake by skidding you have to brakes wheels normally. There is not the last word spoken if this counts now as two or one brake (front + fixed gear).
@d.z.25509 жыл бұрын
Santa Dragon I really have have no idea what you are trying to say. But trust me, running a fixed bike with just a front brake, is not legal in Germany. And seen we are talking about an actual law that says that you have to have two brakes - and back-pedaling doesn't count as a brake - there is no "discussing the problem". If you are lucky, you just get a fine. Now, if you are lucky enough and live in a city where the cops don't look, good for you. But by the law, it isn't allowed.

+The Revata Remember, it is not only about blocking that back leg, u want to pull that front leg up and leaning forward really helps to get the swing of it ;). If its still not working and u have a front break use it slightly while trying a skid, this will take some weight off that back wheel so u can stop it easier!

+Luis Turcios If you live in Los Angeles, there are fixed gear trade and sell groups on facebook. There are a ton of guys trying to sell their Blue Competition Cycles TR250. But yeah, it is rare to fine it for sale anywhere else indeed.
