Awesome system. I work as a General Superintendent for a large commercial Drywall and Painting contractor in the upper Midwest . Dollar against Dollar this technique is the best for achieving level 5 smooth finishes. You look at how fast he was able to blast out that ceiling. Now when we do hotels or any other 40,000 sheet job, I have to consider what going to provide the best outcome. Especially now with the new silica rules and the art of finishing be replaced by boxes and electric vacuum sanders, getting a nice level 5 isn’t as easy as it used to be. Talent levels aren’t even close to 26 years ago when the last of the hawk and trowel finishers were in the twilights of their careers. Hands down the best system for today’s finishers.

Danny..., You can even roll-on compound, if you don't have the more expensive sprayer, yes, you can roll mud like paint, then skim it...very cool and time saving especially on ceilings. I have several knives just like this 4 footer which is the largest todate by TapeTechPro, and with some practice, anyone can skim like a PRO, even you, as the knife does most of the work. Good luck! MGTOW.

The kid did a shitty job at that. I would almost guarantee the ceiling will look like shit if he doesn´t sand it by hand with light. I thought the same thing, plaster is the best if you want the whole ceiling skim coated. A level 4 finish done by hawk and trowel with a good painter will beat level 5 all day long.

Guys, I’m a General Superintendent for a fairly large Drywall and Painting Contractor in the upper Midwest of the U.S.A. All we do are commercial projects such as hotels, Assisted living , high end condos, office buildings/corporate campuses,and Multi family( Apartments ). Except for the offices, which are mostly acoustic ceilings, we almost always need to do level 5 finishes on flat ceilings in rooms with so much natural light.Even on textured ceilings we’ve adopted fogging prior to texture as our standard best practice in well lighted areas. I can say without a doubt that this method of skimming on average is 20% faster. When you see the actual billing , hour for hour , between a crew that rolls on there skim vs a crew that uses technique shown it becomes immediately clear. Not to mention, we are always doing the jobs floor by floor working from the top down. When I compare schedules I also see the comparison there. Rolling requires guys 20% more time. 100man Hours vs 80 man hours. Etc

@@TheBigLeeg so your one skim coat over cadex is lvl 5? Idk started finishing when i was 14 iam 44 now and never seen a one coat lvl 5 ceiling finish... Yes prolly quicker because of the sprayer but one is dreams in fairy land. Not to be rude just my opinion

Tony Locker I’m not a General Superintendent because a got a degree , or I’m somebody’s brother or son and what not. I scratched and clawed my way to the top of the heap. I earned my position via merit. Outstanding performance and results. I’m a journeyman Carpenter by vocation . Which is why I can take a set of prints and specs then apply those to a site. All I’ve ever done is drywall from framing through finish. I started mudding with a hawk and trowel before the industry took up boxes. But clearly you aren’t the type to expand your horizons. I’m the type to tell a guy his work looks like shit or his light check isn’t where he makes a horseshit job look right . Or let a guy get away without pre fill or not tape tight to pipes and outlet blowouts. I’m the guy you would hate or love because before you ever step foot in a unit every single screw better be countersunk and or pulled. The butt joint netter not shoulder etc

Bruno, I just finished 1300 sq. Cement ceiling with electric heat. The cement sucked the water out so stinking fast. Spraying the ceiling with water did not even help. Doing it your way. It would be bone dry when you went running the blade on it. You had to do a very small section at a time. My mud was wet and it dried almost on contact. Really need that blade you were using.

This ceiling would be a great candidate for Sheetrock TuffHIde Level 5 surfacer. Get your ceiling to a solid level 4, then cross-hatch spray the material 18-20 mills thick. Come back the next day for a *very* light sanding and to check for any mishaps and....voila! Beautifully smooth level 5 surface with very little extra labor beyond lev-4 finishing.

Krause Commercial Painting thanks for sharing your experience, I have used hide tuff before and I was happy with results, but spraying joint compound like I do eliminate this last process, those ceilings were only getting 3 coats, on this video is level 2, level 3 I spray the joint and wipe with regular trowel or knife by hand and it looks great, hide tuff I use when client wants level 5 over new Sheetrock with 3 coats and polished, if taping is done good it looks amazing 😉

If you want a perfect level 5 try spraying, then use a notched trowel to level out the mud perfectly, then a magic trowel or knockdown trowel to smooth it after, they’re really flexible with round edges so you don’t leave any over lapping edges.

Someone said it looks like midtown Manhattan but it looks more like the George Washington bridge in the background from the Jersey side? Maybe even Chicago, ldk. This brings back memories of working at local 530. We were required to hang one roll of tape per hour. The units averaged about 60 corner bead per unit. Only hand taping allowed. We worked 7 hour days and had to have seven rolls of tape hung by the end of the day. If you complained about the quota to the union, you got fired. Racketeering at its best 🤕

You can achieve the same quality finish with 2 less steps and complete the jobs faster.
@barrynmccockinner2515
@barrynmccockinner2515 5 жыл бұрын
No you can't with your level 5 primer bullshit Only one step saved You can't call this 2 steps or levels of finishing either either! As step in the finishing process this is a two-step part of one step of the finishing process only the final step of level 5 is sometimes eliminated by good "3 step smoothwallers" + your. "special $60 a bucket primer!" I know I'm smarter than you I'm also a better finisher to without seeing your work or reading rest of your comment so as I said all you're doing is cutting out these two steps of one step of the process that this guy is showing us how to do now and his finished is superior to your love your level for primer because it never fails in that primer still sometimes does regardless of your skill and your primer

An adequately fish finish drywall job to level 4 plus to skim coat is always superior nothing beats it all you can do is try to match it with your special paint. 20 years in the game the best residential smooth while you've ever seen and we did it skipping a little 5 to but it's still not Superior to level 5 or equal so all you guys f*** off with your special primer
@richtaylor712
@richtaylor712 5 жыл бұрын
BarryN McCockinner yes you can. I have been a plaster/finisher for 27 years. If you have to skim a whole ceiling twice to make it look great then find a different job. Two coats and skim is all it should ever take if you know how to run a trowel. This guy spraying this whole ceiling then skimming it is worthless. You need 2 guys. A guy should be wiping it off right away. I can already see dry spots when he wipes it.

Texspray Mark 4, 5 and up can spray mud through an airless based spray system. The other texsprays can spray texture but only airless sprayers can pressurize to 3000-3300 PSI which is need to spray compound or Level 5 surfacer out of a paint gun

Yes just thin it properly and use a tip your rig will keep up with. Probably a 621 would work. I’ve put all kinds of stuff thru rigs for 30 years now. Just make sure material isn’t too abrasive. 👍

Isn't there a product, called "equalizer" or something? It's sprayed on like primer and qualifies as a "level 5 finish"? You seem like you got it figured out, me when approached about a job with skim coat requirement, I say I'm too busy, no time, sorry.

Yes it’s called Level 5 Surfacer-Primer. It works great but it cost $60 a 5 gallon bucket where using compound costs about $10. So the amount you save is used to sand and touch up the walls to perfection. I like mud on ceilings and closets but surfacer on main traffic hallways and bedrooms because the surfacer is tougher and less likely to damage during the remainder of the project

I use prep coat $40 a five and an old speeflo 8900 1225 tip and the standard 1/4 hose. Sands great fills little stuff up fine. Level 5 easy. I’ve never tried thinned out compound. Maybe it would work but I wouldn’t use topping too soft.
