Are you a night owl, or an early bird? Every person has a master biological clock ticking away inside of their brain, and dozens of smaller biological clocks throughout his or her body. But, unlike a normal clock, not every person’s biological clock keeps the same time or even at the same pace. If you’ve ever heard someone say, “I’m not a morning person”, well there’s a reason for that. Some people are meant to be more productive in the morning than at night, and vice versa.
Believe it or not - your body has been programmed to function much better at certain times of the day than others. Based on general morningness and eveningness preferences, different people fall into different classifications, called “chronotypes”. Each chronotype reveals exactly what you need to do to work with your body, not against it.
Join sleep expert, Dr. Michael Breus, as he helps you sleep better by knowing (and understanding) your chronotype!

Everyone around me sleeps early/normal times and I thought something was wrong since I sleep very late, and my most productive hours are at like 11pm-3am. When you talked about wolves sleeping late and said "These are my creatives," and "When did you get this idea? At 2am." I felt really validated

I don't know if Dr Breus will ever see this, but I'd like to say how grateful I am for all the incredible advice he's puts out there. I've watched lots of his videos and I'm subscribed to his emails and through them I've been able to tackle my own terrible sleep problems. Thank you very much.

Being a nurse and being a bear SUCKS!! I absolutely hate waking up at 4:30 AM for work! I wish I could have a more normal 9 to 5 schedule. I think those house would be perfect for my sleep schedule. I have always told people “I am a daytime person but I am NOT an early morning person and there is a huge difference between the two.” This explains that difference so well. I like to go to sleep around 11 PM or midnight and wake up at 6:30 or 7:00 AM.

Interesting. I'm very likely the wolf-type. As I started to embrace more my own pace/timing and focus in my career as an artist/creative, I started to realize I'm always tired and unproductive at the day, no matter how disciplined and enthusiastic I try to be. And then I start to get really productive from 7pm to 2am I feel anxious and tired for no reason during the afternoon. Even doing meditation, walking on nature and reducing caffeine.

I haven’t set an alarm to wake up in the morning in years. I wake up at exactly 6hours every night and I usually wake up between 3-5 am. I get more done before most ppl wake up than I do the rest of the entire day

is it possible to be a mix of bear and wolf LOL i can get my day started in the morning shortly after i wake up (assuming there's light.... it's MUCH harder if i wake up before sunrise) .....and then i have that annoying afternoon dip between 2-4, but then i swearrr i get SO MUCH energy and peak again from like 8pm to 10:30! I don't think that sleepiness even hits me until it's almost midnight or even later sometimes.

Wolf here. My system gets tired and sleep is instant at about 7am I sleep until 3pm or so. If I try and sleep earlier I toss and turn for a hour or so before I initiate the sleep thing.

Very interesting. I am an Doplhin and recognize indeed several ones during my life (45). Due to hormonic therapy (removed breastcancer) my body is confused. It brought me in a menopause. So I can't take hormons to level it or whatever. Sometimes I can be so incredibel tired in the evening that I barely can hold my eyes open around 9. I try to create some sleep pressure by going later because I do not want to wake up at 4AM. What can I do? I don't do naps during the day, eat vegan, organic, sport, don't smoke or drink.

I actually have to drink coffee right before bed because it calms me down and helps me sleep, if I don't it'll take me 3-4 hours to fall asleep or I won't sleep at all even if I didn't get any sleep last night. It's my adhd I'm guessing, coffee basically works like adhd medication

Not all babies are lions. I wasn't. I never woke up early and my mum had to wake me up at 11am so that I would eat something and that lasted another 48 years. I always needed a nap at lunch time, because having to be in school at 8 was far too early and I was still shattered. Even a few years ago working in sales I always went into my car after lunch with a hot drink and then went to sleep for about 20 minutes. Only since I got married at 49 I started waking up earlier, so that I can have time with my husband before he leaves the house to go to work at 6am, who definitely is a lion. My current job doesn't let me sleep as long and much as I want to either. So my day starts at 5.30 or so and ends at 10pm with pretty much continuous work inbetween. When ever I sit down I fall asleep. So I guess that I am one of those wolves that don't get their wolfish needs met. And guess what? I'm fighting with weight gain since, which is definitely not down to what I eat, as I hardly eat carbs.

I’ve always thought of myself as a night owl. Becoming a parent has thrown my normal sleep schedule out of whack. I now try to get up at 6:30am to have enough time before getting my daughter at 7. I think since my natural schedule makes me want to stay up late, I’m just not getting enough hours of sleep. 😴

Just found your channel and really like it. Two questions: 1. Can some people do with less sleep than others says 6-7 hrs per night? 2. Over the last 6-8 months I’ve been very tired. Unable to consistently wake up in the AM to work out. Exhausted when I get home. Have you seen an increase in this since the pandemic? I did have Covid about 1 1/2 ago. I’m 55.

Hello! Some people can sleep less than 6 hours a night if they get high QUALITY sleep. However, we advise everyone shoot for 7-9 hours first and then if you get your sleep dialed in you can begin to get less. As for your tiredness, have you tried taking our Chronoquiz yet? You may need to adjust your wakeup time to fit your chronotype
