This video shows my sleep setup in my 2011 Toyota RAV4. The same general idea should work for any SUV, though you might need to build some kind of platform out of plywood.
If you're interested in living or camping in a truck, check out my buddy Brian's channel, Colorado Backcountry Adventures: / @offgridbackcountryadv...
Be sure to check out my blog at suvrving.com.
If you're into vandwelling, this video might also help you come up with some sleeping ideas for your vehicle.

I recently got a ‘19 CR-V myself. Were you able to go with the plywood trick here or did you end up having to create an actual platform? I feel like even though it slopes a bit the seats fold pretty darn flat like this RAV4 but wasn’t sure.

Tristan, thank you for posting your simple and efficient design for how to set up one's vehicle. I have watched hundreds of vehicle -camping videos for the past 5+ years. I have watched Van dwellers, truck dwellers, vehicles towing campers, minivan set ups,etc. The bottom-line line for me is safety and vehicle reliability. I need to be able to jump in the front seat, without exiting the car, to evade any dangerous situation. I used to own a CR-V, one the best vehicles I ever owned. I am deciding now amongst a RAV4, CR-V or possibly a Prius. They all have similar length and width behind the front seats , but what I value is interior height. I really like your rear shelf idea. It could be used as a cooking prep counter for camp cooking. Actually, what really intrigues me about your design is not having to "gut" the seats ,etc. thus destroying the value of your SUV. Your set up is an excellent blueprint for SUV living.

Thanks for sharing. I am finding that all the videos being uploaded about "van living" are helping to form a very big picture about what is entailed, how to adapt, what options are possible, what are the experiential advantages and disadvantages of each option, and whether or not it is worth it to transition to this lifestyle, permanently, as a transition where one can save money for something else, or temporarily as a vacation from high rent, high overhead, and over working just to stay afloat...all this seems to represent something creative and worth at least exploring. It is like people are rethinking their life through these posts.

This is actually a good topic. I've been homeless a couple times in my life and I lived 3 1/2 months out of a 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis, then again later in life out of 2 cars, one was a 1994 Plymouth "K" car and the other was a 1988 Lincoln Mark VII. I made it work and i actually enjoyed the experience despite it being tough to stay stealthy. Left two windows always slightly down and use a sleeping bag and a couple thin pillows. I slept width wise on the back seat. We do what we have to do, but I commend those who actually CHOOSE to do this. It takes a strong mind and spirit to do this. To me, this is freedom. You don't get freedom by being locked down to a mortgage or rent and a job which allows you no time for yourself. Life is more important than that. Cheers and stay frosty my friend.

Hi Nicholas. Thanks for the note here. This kind of lifestyle or adventure isn't for everyone, and it doesn't have to be. For those of us who enjoy it, it's a great way to recharge and have some separation from-and perspective on-everyday life.

Strangely enough, just a couple months after purchasing a used RV, it caught fire and burned to the ground. Within two weeks, a nice older lady gave me her 1979 camper van in near perfect condition with low miles. So I will be making the very best of that vehicle for as many years as I can as well as repainting it and sprucing up the engine block and currently finishing up various electrical work. If you are interested to see what it looks like and details about it, visit my channel as I don't publish much, but thought I would talk about my van. It's quite a rare vehicle and highly sought after.

your mom! - I have a 2007 CR-V and the back seats do not lay down flat. And the front seats do not recline to be even with the back. Fortunately I'm only 4'11" female, so I have a method for sleeping in back that would not work for taller people. One thing I can suggest for privacy: get a telescoping shower rod and black curtains; wedge it up as high as you can just behind the front seats (I brace it at the hand holds) to hide you from peepers looking through your clear windshield and clear front side windows if they are not tinted (mine are not). I have the curtains placed on the rod so they open in the center so i can reach through if I need something that I have transferred to the front. I have a paid-for home but I like to get out and travel cheaply.

I had the gap there too, I used the space for storage/ bags and flattened the top. I'm going to try to live out of it this summer, I can't wait! Nice! I just finished a 21 day road trip around CA and NV, my sleep system was great w exception of the head area- this looks like a good solution. FYI Ford Escape owners- the back seat doesn't fold down completely flat- there's an angle between the cargo bay area and the back seat-back. You can solve this with some pieces of foam cut and arranged underneath your sleeping pad. I also generally parked facing slightly downhill, and ended up super comfy. (btw this is 2007 model Ford Escape)

Thanks for that. I have a 2004 Santa Fe which I slept in last Summer whilst playing music at outdoor festivals. I built a big platform with a carpet. Underneath is room for some stuff. But it is too close to the roof. This made for some difficulties. The problem is that the seats do not go flat. So my sleeping platform had to rest at the height of my back seats when folded. This Summer I will take one single seat out completely so I can sleep lower and use the other side for my equipment. I think I will be able then to sleep on the road between concerts. Just a bit of re cutting the wood. Great fun though.

If I am traveling to the campsite in an SUV, I'll just use it to store the gear that would be too heavy for a backpack. It makes more sense to me to set up a camp that is more comfortable.

One thing nice with a hybrid SUV is that you can run your heat/AC all night long off the battery and the engine will cycle on and off when necessary to charge the battery and keep the temperature consistent.

Nice, But i have a Honda crv and all you do is remove the front seat headrests and slide the seat all the way front and the seat lays back to the rear seat which also reclines and slides front and back and it makes a perfect bed. The crv also comes with a picnic table in the back where the spare tire would fit if it wasn't on the rear door. Good video though.

The picnic table was discontinued after first generation CR-V, and spare tire was moved to underneath cargo bed when changed to rear lift hatch. I had 2006 (last of second gen) for only a few months before it was destroyed when my husband was rear-ended. Replaced with 2007 (first year of third gen), which is very different even from the 2006. I don't know what succeeding model years feature. Hopefully they went back to sleeping-friendly configuration.

I like the idea of the piece of plywood suspended from the driver's headrest. I had been wondering how I was going to resolve that extra-space problem so that I can sleep lengthwise instead of diagonally. I'm 6'4" and need all the room I can get in the back.

Thanks! Awesome set-up and my SUV is similar to yours, so this helps a lot! I have a question about your back shelf/platform. How did you secure it? Thanks!
@SUVRVing
@SUVRVing 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. The shelf is actually a factory Toyota accessory. There are holes in on the inside walls of the SUV made for the support bars of the SUV. The bars themselves contract an inch or so, so you contract them, stick them into the holes, and then they expand and go to their full length inside of the holes. If your SUV doesn't have something like that, it's easy enough to make a shelf out of a piece of plywood and some support legs out of pieces of 1x4 or 2x4 lumber, or even wooden dowels or PVC pipe, etc. Let me know if you have any other questions.

They sent me one to review and I used it and made a video about it. I didn't love it. I thought it was overpriced, and I don't like air mattresses in general because they are very cold on cold nights. You have to put extra insulation on top of them. But if you like it and it works for you, more power to you.

Noted! Thanks for the heads up. So far so good with a blanket. Price wasn’t a barrier to me though. I guess I like it because of the temporary setup for the weekend. Didn’t have to use wood with their extenders and it compacts down so I keep it in vehicle. Saw your vehicle didn’t really need the extenders but mine was a must because my back area is smaller.

I sleep in the back of a 2018 RAV4 Hybrid. Toyota unfortunately (for this setup) moved the spare tire inside the car into a compartment below the trunk area. This causes the folded seats to not sit flat anymore. I have to add additional couch cushions to the feet area to make it level, and I often have to find a slanted area to park with the front of the car pointed downhill to level it out (prevents me from sliding towards the rear hatch during the night). It also raises me pretty close to the ceiling and makes it hard to sit up to fetch things. I love my "minimalist RV" with 34mpg for trips (hybrid version), but the slanted bed platform makes it extra challenging to keep all the bedding items required in a compact setup like you have.

When I was a kid, our whole four family members traveled across Europe. To save expenses on traveling, we all slept in the car. The car was a freaking 4 door sedan. Dad slept in the driving seat. Mum on the passenger seat, the kids slept on the back seats. We had used cardboards to ward off the cold coming from the windows. How you sleep does not matter. Stop acting spoiled. If you are truly tired and needy, just having a waterproof roof that protects you from the element is enough.

SUV RVing I'd really like to know about one for a 2004 Saturn Vue. My cargo has a nasty bump where the back fold down seat reaches the area that holds the spare underneath. I HAVE slept in it a couple of times, but I was very tired, and it didn't hurt til morning! Has great potential for a 6'3 man, though! More than enough space if I could utilize it. It would be a weekender type of thing for my dog and myself. Thank you for any help/advise!
