In this video How to socialise / train a reactive dog I explain how to socialise (train) a reactive dog with other dogs. With the aid of Dante (a reactive dog I have fostered) and the next door neighbour's dog I demonstrate how I use both language to show Dante I will provide for his security needs whilst desensitising him from perceived threats.
Disclaimer: if you have any aggression issues with your dog be sure to complete my online course on nervousness and aggression before implementing any advice given on my KZfaq videos as a complete oversight of the method with careful management is needed.

** PS: I NEED YOUR HELP **
My goal is to better the lives of #onemilliondogs in my lifetime. It is clearly impossible for me to do this on a one to one basis. I have seen that with around every thousand views on my videos, I get a comment or email thanking me and letting me know the video has helped. So working on that basis, I have to make videos on how to address every problem
behaviour and accumulate ONE billion views in order to help 1,000,000 dogs.
You can help me reach #onemilliondogs by (1) subscribing to my channel and (2) give this video a thumbs up - so KZfaq suggests this video to more dog owners and we can help 1,000,000 dogs all over the world. Thank you so much!
** THANK YOU **

My pup does what Dante does but also screams and howls at the same time. It’s very unnerving for everyone. Do you have additional advice for us?

Hi Margaret, reactions vary between dog to dog however the advice is the same. To show them you will protect them before they panic or immediately take over if they do.

This was an EXCELLENT series of videos! You approached a common behavior issue differently than most trainers. Instead of sharply correcting their reactive behavior, you explained the root of the problem and how to properly fix it so the dog proceeds with confidence, a better relationship with the owner and therefore much happier. Thank you!

The trick of walking the dogs in parallel is what helped my dog reactive foster get comfortable with my friend’s dogs. We found that if you walk them next to or near each other, but at a distance where they can’t physically touch, it helps a lot. Even better if it’s a long walk that tires out your dog and forces them to let their guard down a bit. It only took one of these walks for my dog to be able to be right next to these other dogs and eventually come right up to them without any problems

I think these are great exercises for reactive dogs, like mine. The key, I think, is taking small steps each day, and every time you walk your dog, along with a lot of patience and love for your dog. Love your videos. Thank you so much Nigel!

My lurcher is really benefiting from all your reminders. She's great apart from when on the lead & certain dogs walk by, but we walk away or hide behind cars & do lots of talking about how safe she is with me. Tonight we saw 'the' Shar-Pei & all was well on our side of the street......the Great Danes might not be so easy but we'll keep trying

Another fantastic video Nigel. We tell everyone to follow you! Just about to share this with a friend’s father who has just adopted a dog through Starlight Barking. Great little dog at home but walks are no longer fun and are becoming really stressful. What a brilliant idea to get the local passive dogs on side. Thank you for explaining your theories in such a simple way that we can actually understand them! Also for throwing a life-line to so many rescue dogs. Best wishes Wendy and Starlight Barking Team.

Thank you so much for this series which is a wonderful support, encouragement and inspiration for guardians of reactive dogs like mine. One thing though, could you sometimes demonstrate using a very small dog? Mine weighs only 6k but is a feisty, active little terrier type and although I can hold on to him without problem, when calming him or removing him I need to be almost at ground level to hold his harness - not easy for any length of time for a 73 year old! Any suggestions?
@nigelreed
@nigelreed 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Hazel, glad it is of help. I may try just walking away each time if it hurt my back and returning again. Or picking the dog up. Waiting for him to calm (assuming he is not a biter) then putting him down when he calms. The technique doesn't greatly differ but just has to adapt so you don't hurt yourself.

I have a labrador that is such a great dog, was very relaxed but had some bad attacks. He still can socialise with dogs, family and some friends. He seems to get triggered by sudden appearnaces and jumpy dogs he does not know. He has not reactivity in any other area, people, cars, bikes anything. I have ordered your book, I am heartbroken that he barks and lunges, and I am having progress in giving treats and avoiding, an I am books private fields. I hope that I can turn it around.

HI Samantha, It's a haqihana harness. It's okay but no better than any other non slip harness. I personally prefer Ruffwear. It's Rye, East Sussex. I googled Elm hill - the buildings look very similar. Both clearly restored from the 17th / 18th century.

Such a helpful video. Is a harness better than collar for reactive dog? I watch other utubers too so getting confused. My dog is calmer with harness but responds better with collar. Is it OK to use a combination or is that confusing to the dog? Help!!! She's a collie X
@nigelreed
@nigelreed 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol, A harness stops Dante hurting his neck. A collar is slightly better control. I don't need to control as I can handle Dante's pulling with ease so it's down to you to feel if you have control or not on a harness.
@carolkelly7
@carolkelly7 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response Nigel. I have difficulty controlling pulling as I have bad back. So I put harness on and use collar to walk. The harness gives me extra control cos I can grab it if I need to without hurting her neck.

I was walking my reactive dog in the park when a calm off-leash dog a little bigger than my dog came up to us wanting to play with my dog. My dog did an aggressive freeeze while the calm off-leash dog slowly moved to sniff my dog's butt. I wanted to see how the encounter would play out and did not interfere. My dog does not lilke his butt sniffed and moved to attack the other dog. I pulled my dog back with the leash, said NO sharply, and then told/made my dog to sit. I then got in front of my dog and told him NO no no and he started to calm down. When I turned around the other dog was lying down a few feet from us, looking at us and very calm. The owner showed up, put a lead on his dog and walked the dog away. What should I have done in this situation?
