I recently completed a Retro Gem install on my PS2 Slim but came to the realization that it wasn't a modded system. Rather than just softmod it and call it a day I decided to use this opportunity to create a new PS2 Slim softmodding guide that covers every single revision of the console from 7XXXX to 9XXXX and Bravia PS2 TVs! By using FreeDVDBoot in combination with either FMCB or FunTuna, all PS2 Slim owners can take advantage of the wonderful homebrew scene on PS2!

I'm not sure how I ended up doing this at near enough midnight, but thank you kindly! The DVD drive I had lying around didn't work, but I did have a laptop DVD drive which, after some soldering shenanigans, I managed to get working with my SATA USB connector 😂

Hey man, lovely video, I just bought a ps2 bravia, I have a question, for the ps2 slim you kept the tray open, should I do the same with my ps2 bravia tv and keep the tray open so that the ps2 does not read the disc? my ps2 bravia is set to english language btw, so can the step of keeping the tray open be skipped all together? thank you so much!

Does this soft mod allow one to play games off a USB or external HDD, if so, must the games be in IMG or ISO format on the USB or HDD?

don't know if you'll answer me but, fmcb isn't working on my ps2 slim 90,001 3.11U disk drive version(I had to find the specific hybrid iso cuz the all ps2 one didn't work)

You have to use FunTuna on a 90000 ps2

Does it matter if the bios battery is dead or not? given my Slim is over 20 years old now and I've never opened it up I'm sure it's probably dead by now. I know my Fat one (modded) is dead as the time is always at the year 2000 when it starts, games still boot though (via actual discs not emulation). I'm keen to try this in near future, I did buy a couple extra official 8mb cards a couple years back so I'm thinking I should be good.

So went diggin around the old stash boxes to find my Slim.. scph-90002, so I may need to fish up a battery if thats the case. Never opened up the case before though so hopefully I dont mess anything up ^^;

Why do you need the dvd-r? Cant you just copy from usb to memory card?

Because you trigger the exploit with the DVD. How do you expect to copy things from USB to a memory card on a stock console?

Less is better but if you are buying another card may as well just get a premoded one.

The 90 series can only use FunTuna so you will need to do it yourself with this method

@@ArchadesGames now that's really interesting... i got myself an original sony memory card (magicgate) and still have the same error as before. FMCB can be installed via BOOT-DVD, I can also navigate in the menu, but as soon as I select something, the screen remains black. do you have any other ideas that I could try?

So this method works on Japanese ps2s as well? I was thinking of importing a japanese ps2 over to America and wanted to soft mod it so I can play American and Japanese games on it.

I've come to accept that my 2009 slim ps2 is not moddable. But are you saying that every slim PS2 has a mod now to play any ps1 and ps2 game

Anything compatible with OPL and PS1 games can be done with a swap trick and burned discs.

Disc based backups have to be patched and run with ESR. You can run games from ISO through a network share on Slim for best results. Region shouldn't matter with OPL.

@@ArchadesGames Thanks for info - I will not do softmod in this way then, as I have a big physcial collection of PS2 games from different regions. I have two PS2 slims, one with modchip, one vanilla - was thinking about softmodding vanilla, but will wait for some better method. For example: you can easily softmod OG XBOX (Rocky 5) and it reads backups and imports no problem - I would love to see similar solution for PS2 someday.

I hope one day the PSX DESR 5k/7k variations get custom firmware and unlocked hard drive support. Fingers crossed. Mine has FMCB, but its not the same level of wow factor as a PS3 60gb with CFW.

I know the new IDE emulator from the guy who made the 3DO ode supports PSX HDD emulation but that's about it as far as the HDD goes.

You need a working DVD drive to do the exploits yourself otherwise buy a premoded memory card.

I have a chipped PS2 console, but also soft modded as well to play dual layer DVD games. My chip does not run those.

You can but USB 1.1 is too slow for most games so you will have performance problems. Network loading or ESR patched discs is better for slims

The only frustration I'm receiving is LaunchElf not recognising my Fat32 formatted drive... it's in there! Tried inserting it when the PS2 was on and off. The computer reads it, why can't this bloody thing work properly lol
