Hey Josh. I just wanted to thank you for the great videos. I just made my first custom cable today. It's gunmetal grey with carbon techflex and a tungsten colored cerekote GX16 connector. The mini USB is a bit more tricky than USB C but I took my time and ended up getting great results. i'll do my coil tomorrow using a 3/4" dowel. Hopefully it turns out similar to yours! Gotta keep that pressure on! haha

Just a tip - if you want to expose more wire, you can use "liquid electrical tape" to "paint" over exposed areas and electrically isolate them safely.

The prongs on the USB shell should be crimped onto the cable jacket. The prongs actually dig into the cable jacket, and after they are crimped, the crimp height should be measured to ensure a good crimp. The purpose of the crimp is to alleviate any stress on the conductors when the cable is tugged or pulled--increasing the cables tensile force.

I'm glad I found your channel man. I just got here so maybe I haven't found it yet, but I'm trying to learn how to connect/soldier a usb-c to a micro USB cable. I have modified a Bluetooth speaker, which was two tweeters, to now power those tweeters plus two mids and one 8" sub. I paralleled some 18650s and soldiered them together for longer juice-time, but the sub just drains it, despite having a bank of six 18650s in parallel. So I want to connect a bigass power bank and I'll need a usb-c for the bank and a micro usb for the Bluetooth speaker. It's not amazing, but it is a good system for my shed in the backyard. Plus, I had all the stuff laying around so I haven't spent a nickle on it, excluding the electricity used to soldier everything together. Hey just wanted to let you know you have some wires in the wrong places for the mini USB. The green wire is actually the D+ and it goes on bottom middle pin and the white is the D- and it goes on the top right pin. So you got the location of the data in and data out right but the colors are wrong. It probably wouldn't matter if you are just making a cable. The only reason I found this out is because I'm making an Ergodox and had to make a USB header to go from the Teensy to the PCB and ended up putting them in the wrong place based off the color. You swapped the D+ and D- lines... While it will usually work, it could cause some problems with communication loss.

Maybe it goes left 2 right - 5:44 / RED-WHITE-GREEN-BLACK, (Vcc,D-,D+,ID, Ground on metal plate) - I saw several connectors soldiered by that order. This video is opposite from ISO standards for micro USB connection.

I would suggest some heatshrink over the inner solder places, for shortening protection.

They should have made the RJ45 connector the standard for USB3 with Cat6 FTP cable. Would have made a lot easier for custom cable making.

Hey great video! I have a USB-C female wire that I would like to solder to a USB 2.0 circuit board. The USB-C wire has what looks like several separate cables within it and I can't really distinguish which ones need to be soldered to the board.

hey so I got like a broken repeater in a 30 meter long USB3 cable. I luckily was able to remove the section with the repeater, and shorten the cable by 5 meters, which hopefully won't be an issue. Yet now I've got this 5 meter cable going on, which doesn't have 4 but 8 cables, excluding the earth cable. This is of course cabling for the repeaters. And now I'm wondering whether I could get USB plugs which are active, so I would not lose this active capability of the cable I've got. Do you happen to know what to look for? I can't seem to find any active USB plugs.

Here's a good question: can you take a USB-C connector (cable end, like your first one here) and, using a suitable voltage/amp wall charger (for a chromebook, so power isn't too high), solder the type C connector to the charger cable? Basically changing the barrel type plug to a C. Thank you.

If im buying a crimping tool, is there one you'd recommend, like which sizes it being able to strip - the ones im looking at will do 0.75 - 6mm, but it's a cheap one..maybe a more specialst one would work better?

I had a thicker solder and was not as precise so they are a little thick at connection points. The cord works and charges, but is this a possible risk for fire? Or will a short just burn it out if it occurs?

Okay but what about usb-c that has 2 pads GRD & V on one side and six pads on the other. A6 & A7 seem to be data points according to the interwebs but it only sends power, no data if I say plug it in to a kb versus plugged into my phone juice runs fine. Yes, the joints are clean. I just don't know what the deal is with the six pad b-side.

Quick question. Is there a reason why heatshrink could interfere with the soldering points? I bought my first cable with Aviator connectors and it didn't really work. It kept disconnecting etc. I finally gave in to check the solder points and cut open the heat shrink. Solder points were fine and nothing interfered with them. Ever since I cut the shrink open it's been working flawlessly.
