Scales are important in music theory, but you can play great solos without knowing a single one of them. I'll show you how to come up with memorable leads without learning any scales.

Hey David! I just wanted to thank you for your take on paying melodic solos. I studied music formally at college and learned jazz harmony and theory, scales, arpeggios and transcribed countless licks. But I always struggled with playing what my heart and mind really wanted to say. Your videos have really helped me let go and play what I have always heard in my head! Thanks much

One of your best videos! Simple concepts and beautiful melodies. Keeping it simple initially and gradually adding compatible notes to fill out the solos. Loved it and will revisit often.

I absolutely enjoy your method of teaching David. It is obvious your desire is to have students embrace the music that can happen as well as the music that exists. It is such a pleasure to attend your learning experiences.

Thank you for a wonderful new recipe for guitarist. I kinda wore jams like that anyway because of the way it looks like on the fretboard. Red cup blue cup/// what a clear simple thing. I think you hit on how john Mayer pulls off blazing solos with so much groove and emotion . Why Clapton is not the only person who has been free zone. Spoken words though a guitarist but painting a picture and rolling the dice it's the other side of timeless art. You my friend is worth of the journey, now go out and make a number one top guitar solo for the world to play .🎸🎆🌏🙂

Terrific first phrase on the intro solo. Timing, intonation, note choices, emotion... has it all. Dude, if you don't use that as the melody in a new song, I will. 😁

I already "played Solo On Guitar WITHOUT Learning Scales". They told me to go take lessons .. ;-) .. I played in a band though, without knowing about scales. Still raining guitars there.

hi David i am not trying to find fault with what you are saying but there must be a third cup or more my cup i dont need to play the guitar to compose i am not improvising the way you do i just compose music in my head then work out on the guitar the melodys and the chords i hear the advantage with this i can do it 24 hours a day ie when i am awake sleeping or dreaming . if i said i had a painting and they could work out who the famous artist is by the numbers he was using below the paint . you would laugh at that and so would the world

Bro what? YOU are the extra cups....he's saying flow around and feel what's good for you. Using the 2 cups as a foundation to start with but not getting too deep in the theory. Let the licks flow.....
