I had been fooling with the puzzle off and on for several days, noticing different manipulations that made subtle differences. But then all of a sudden the whole thing fell apart in my lap, and I needed the video to figure out how to put the thing back together again.

Thank you for the solution! I tried this one at the store, but it didn't catch my interest that much. I somehow felt like I'm searching for patterns and hints but I didn't understand why and where. Everything felt kind of unreasoned. Kind of calming you have a similar felling about this puzzle lol

I’ve done 3 level 6 hanayama before this one and I thought those were hard this one ended up being so hard, and I’m not sure to this point how I solved it, had to watch it after not even being sure what’s the starting position 😅

novice solver - took me a while to get it solved and ran around the house yelling "I'm a genius" when I did. I understand the mechanics needed to solve it now, but my problem is that it feels sloppy and there is no "reset".

When you get a puzzle like this what is the first few things you do? Also For this puzzle you knew how to solve it step by step. When you first get a puzzle do you just try to solve it by any means then break it down step by step. Or do you start looking for each step? When I get a puzzle I just mess with it until it comes apart then I see how it's built to get the steps. I'm good at solving puzzle but not good at understanding them enough to know each step to solve like you can.

Great question! I do fiddle with it and try to solve them. When I get frustrated, I put them down for a while before coming back, then try to get them apart. With most I can, when I have them apart better understand how they work, but this one was not that way. I'm still not sure exactly how the parts of this one slide apart. After I've solved one, then I put it together and solve it over and over until I have a method that works every time and I can do it pretty fluently, then I make a video. So it takes me a day or two of walking around with the puzzle in my pocket, solving it every time I get a minute or two before I make the videos. (Usually)

@@EricBuffington that's a good strategy. I just got into puzzles recently. I watched a few videos and got the puzzle itch. I didn't realize how expensive puzzles can get. I really like puzzle videos like yours but when I see a puzzle I like I have to stop the video so I don't spoil it. I solved this one but when I did it didn't come apart as smooth as when you did it. I need to remember that when a puzzle is solved correctly it should come apart really easy. What is your favorite puzzle?

Wow that's a tough question! I guess it depends on the type of puzzle you want to solve. I think my favorite to date is a Japanese puzzle box from my grandfather. It was challenging and special to me because it really got me into puzzling. I've never seen one exactly like it, but I do like wooden puzzle boxes. @@EricBuffington Eric Buffington I never tried a puzzle box but they look fun. I never know which one to try. My mom bought me what she though was a puzzle box off Amazon. It ended up being a normal box with a hidden draw. You got to it by just pulling a pin. So she ended up sending it back. Thanks for the list.

definitely. It's one that I can't actually follow either. It has something to do with the nobs on each piece, but I'm not sure how exactly it works.

I managed to put the pieces back together but with them flipped... the padlock with the two grooves one and the keyhole with the one grove one. I think it’s like that forever now since I can’t pull it apart

hmmm, that's strange. I did get a second one of these puzzles and it took a while to get it just right to slide into the first position. Wiggle it and see if you can make it work.

@@EricBuffington At this point I must have invested about 6 hours of wiggle time haha. I've even resorted to contacting hanayama themselves. Something definitely isn't right. I cant even manipulate it into the start position as it is shown in the packaging.
