Showing how to sort mixed goose down and feathers for MYOG DIY project. I used this method to separate down from feathers, and recover good quality, large clusters down for my winter sleeping bag. Most of the final down clusters was a quarter size (2.5cm) and had approximate fill 800+. Cheaper than buying new expensive down. Also great to recycle down from old quilt, duvet or pillow.
The best setup used readily available items - see through plastic container, some vent tubing and a small bathroom vent (10wt), and cheap mesh zipper bags for collection.
1:00 First setup - tried copying tube columns used in industry. Failed as plastic bag tubes would collapse and sometimes leak down.
2:00 Second attempt - hard containers and large room for settlement. Also easy removal of sorted down, as well as waste.
5:44 Took about 2 days to process 4kgs. Maybe 30% of down lost in waste as it was well connected to feathers - price you pay to sort much faster than by hand. Also much cheaper than buying new down.
After sorting I recommend to treat it with UV light (or wash but be careful not to ruin) to sanitize before using in your project.

Thank you for making this video. I just inherited a very old down sleeping bag from my grandfather and want to refine the down to something I can use to make my 2.5cm loft ultralight quilt. He will be very proud to see my making a device like this ( he’s still alive). Now to source the materials and get to work. Even after buying all the materials it will be much cheaper than the $200 worth of down I need and a lot more fun.

I don't know what you do for a living... But your mind works like an engineer. It's videos like yours that I show to my son to help inspire him to use that creative mind. If there is a will, there is a way!

I appreciate this video. I am hunting geese (not very well, but Im trying!) and I am harvesting down in addition to the meat. I am getting some feathers as well, so something like this will help me sort at a later date. I hear a goose has an ounce of down. I am sure Im not getting nearly all of it either, Im mostly harvesting from the breast area. Still, if I can end up getting a few ounces for projects thats better than nothing!

I am amazed at you ingenuity and dedication toward the goal of creating a high Fill power goose down. This would be such a mess. I'm happy that you ar are satisfied with the effort. How expensive is cleaned goodse down? The mixture sticks to everything. No thanks, and I had a linen shop which specialized in the finest goosedown comforters. They were so beautiful and filled with the purest Siberian product. If anyone here has home decor or comforter questions don't hesitate to ask.

Well, I agree but it was part of whole exercise to do from scratch. Cost of good down , properly washed and treated is about 35$ per once. To buy bulk maybe cheaper but I used 24oz and it would be pretty expensive sleeping bag at 35$/oz. Pure Siberian goose down sounds like a marketing term :) Best are eastern European, Ukraine , Hungary, Poland. Or Eider down. Chinese Alixpress companies sell "siberian" but quality is questionable not to mention animal cruelty (they pluck live birds)

Колба приблизно 30см х 50см , унцію пуху, Амер унцію, 28г, і ~90г на кришку, тоді вимірюємо об,єм--->The U.S. standard utilizes the fill power system of the International Down and Feather Bureau (IDFB) which uses 'steam conditioning' as its official method. In the IDFB method, precisely one ounce (28.4 grams) of conditioned down is placed in a cylinder (290 mm in diameter and 500 mm in height). The down is then compressed from above with a flat object, or plate mass, weighing 94.25 grams. The down volume is then measured and assigned a corresponding fill power.

Sorry what is "cuin"? If you mean loft than about 800 fill. I used 700g total for this bag. Ended with about 8-10 cm loft height

@@inkognito1545 I doubt maybe when tweaked but also that quality down is hard to find and you would need to go through a lot of down to collect much
