You can go a step further and do what you're doing with the AutoPan with a ring-modulator instead and feed only the low-end of your kick into the sidechain input of the ring-modulator. Another dope thing is to then actually give that ring-mod (or your AutoPan) a frequency that is HALF the frequency of the lowest note, making it sound as if your kick or bass has an even lower fundamental, but its only "revealing" itself in the amplitude modulation of other instruments/parts :)

yeah this is what I was going to say, you can use Ring mod if you don't have autopan, ring mod is basically AM (amplitude modulation) and this is what he is replicating in this tutorial

Ouh that's a really cool Idea! I was actually going to program a little M4L device that does pretty much exactly that. I'll definitively try to add the Pitch Shifting in there! Thanks for the Idea🙏

My problem with the ring modulator is that most of them only work in sine shape but autopan has this cool soft square-like shape that is a lot closer to a saturated shape than a sine I tested the one octave lower modulation on the autopan, but I didn’t really like the sound. 🥹 Thank you for the comment, In hope you are doing good!

I tried doing this in Reaper with kHs Ring Mod set to input from 3/4 and the kick into 3/4 and it is not working the way I expected it to lol. It's almost like the bias parameter does the same thing as the mix parameter... and since it's not doing anything both the bias and mix parameters are just controlling the gain from -infinite to 0db...

Yesss I’ve been using this technique a lot lately but with khs ringmod to give texture to my sounds. It really is the perfect way to mimic distortion haha

Any idea how to do this in other DAWs? I'm using Reaper. Edit: I kind of got it working with LFO tool by XferRecords but I have to manually input the LFO shape and there isn't really an easy way to get the curves symmetrical unless I use the default sine or triangle shape.

Default sine must be enough imo. Best would be a filtered square though but sine will make it too!

@@Letsynthesize Thank you. One other thing, the autopan in ableton looks like is has multiple wavelengths in a single cycle. Is that the case? In other words, it looks like it goes to peak and trough more than one time per cycle which means it could be 72hz * however many wavelengths. It looks like 72hz * 5. Lfo tools sine wave is a single wavelength so 72hz * 1. I can set it to 72*5 which is 360hz, but also by the way there will be artificats because the daw won't be able to accurately render volume changes this many times per buffer. That shouldnt be an issue and will still sound fake distortion but its good to be aware of it I suppose

Um, can someone please explain why a pan effect creates distortion? I would like to understand that before I use it. In this example it looks to me as if it fulfills some kind of gate function.

In this case I turned off the panning effect, so it works as a simple “volume automation”,(like you dragged the volume slider on the mixer up and down), and if you do it in the frequency of your main instruments like the bass or kick, it creates an ILLUSION of distortion.

⁠@artybob new stuff is good. No reason to box yourself into a specific sound. Plus taking this knowledge to a different style/genre is very useful. Like his dnb course worked really well for me making dubstep.
