I'm an old friend or Red Garland. We were kind of like family. Red used to play with my father, back in the 1940s, in Dallas, Texas. Then I used to play with Red, back in the early 1980s, until he passed away in 1984. I'm a trumpet player. I received a lot of encouragement from Red. Anyway, I want to say thank you for your dedication to share Red's concept.

Miles was definitely thinking 'Block chords' in the traditional sense. Miles played in Dizzy's, Billy Eckstein and Benny Carter's big bands, he most certainly knows how a block chord should sound. However, what Red gave him was something slightly different and he welcomed it. And just like that, history is made.

i just watched this and this helped me so much. i'm not a very good pianist yet and this is probably the coolest and easiest technique to play block chords and it also sounds really good. i'm so grateful for this

SO much beauty in a quick intro, and just tossed off at the drop of a hat! That high-level mastery is what I strive for. The gist of these voicings is a style in itself (also reminiscent of Gene Harris and that bluesy, dreamy, "nightclub" sound), and well worth the time to develop fluency in. Voicings quite like these are in the first chapters of the Elements of Jazz Piano course from Open Studio. I just got that course just over a week ago, and I am loving it! And, I might add, I was not paid nor prompted to write this!

Love Shearing block chords. Yes Red keeps a uniform shape. Love it!

Great video! It's a unique style of Red's that sounds sophisticated and elegant when played with the right touch. Red seems to play the middle 5th very gently between the octaves in the RH. They sound ethereal, almost like blended harmonics.

The last time I saw Red Garland was at the jazz club Rash Life in the Village, New York. The quartet featured Red on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Junior Cook on saxophone, and my mentor Leroy Williams on drums. It seemed Red could only play chords by then.

i did study with you and Martin for 2 years from time to time I did have a Great experience just at home.studying 10ntone bebop scale in quintuplets in all kinds of ways two voices..minor thirds...3 against 5 two hands vocings the hole bunch getting it tonfastest possible then goomg to playin outside so super locrian on the bIII # IV VII so Over C7 I started( playing all possibilities C altered as well as Dbmelodicminor and I applied the same to the other steps...when playing the improvised 5tuplets I tried tonplay sspaces ass well so 212 grroipings or 1234~ 1 groupongs whete the rythmical LH fills thenspace with a triton e...after studying those last weeks really focussing on this in all keys I had my apotheosis in the middle of the night ovet all tunes lukebautumn leaves giant steps moments notice invitation conception(.as just a random one I never played) the most nice thing that Ibstartednto play way more free and seemed to could play anything with rythmical freedom.....AldonThanks to your lessons ...

Thanks Open Studio for ur great videos. Just a note of clarification to Adam, with all due respect, Miles calling out to Red G. to play Block Chords was on Red how he interpreted that. Later on in the song he does in fact play the Block Style we associate with George Shearing and let us not forget the Errol Garner right handed and left handed Block Chord style. Just saying.
