In the Netherlands you say Dank U wel (polite) or dankjewel (informal) or bedankt (very informal). To intensify you only use the last one: heel erg bedankt, ontzettend bedankt

I talk to my Russian friends on a regular basis and I've realised that their tone is often lower and polite. Even while texting they make sure to use smileys after every sentence to make it friendly. But it's also true that it's very difficult to crack a joke, they wouldn't laugh or just look confused.

That’s true, Russian people are polite and friendly, that’s part of their culture I guess, as well as the sense of humour which can be very different among different cultures, so maybe what sounds as a joke in your culture, isn’t perceived as such in Russian. This goes beyond learning the language, it is more about understanding people mentality and it takes time and being among people from a specific culture to understanding the way they think.
