It costs more and doesn’t work as well.

Thank you for these videos! I have read the 2 most highly recommended books on studio design and soundproofing, but its definitely more helpful for me to see some of the process broken down in video format. Keep up the great work!

Thank u for this. Been researching soundproofing my condo ceiling for three years and have also landed at this setup. Will work on a room next year and hoping to help with the upstairs impact noise.

Awesome video. I asked a question about ceiling in your other video, before I saw this video. Anyway, I'm guess that a drop ceiling system is not the best way to go for keeping my space quiet? I'm not really worried about sound escaping my room. I'm working with my landlord on modifying a concrete walled space with metal ceiling into a moderately quite studio. What are the best ways to add mass to the ceiling with a drop ceiling solution? Thanks!

So I am not sure I would really recommend soundproofing with a drop ceiling. If that is all you have to work with, any way you can add mass will help.

what do you think about what is better 2 lb mass vinyl under the 1st level flooring or 2 layers of drywall with green glue in ceiling? this is a basement ceiling. or, 2 lb mass vinyl under flooring and 530 quiet rock dry wall?

Hey Ben! So the two layers of drywall equals 4.38lb/square foot. So you would need two layers of 2lb mass loaded vinyl to equal the same weight/mass. I think the green glue adds more soundproofing by adding a damping layer to the mass. Now adding weight under the flooring is a good idea with the drywall or the vinyl. Mass is your friend if the floor above can hold it. See how the 530 Quiet Rock compares to the two layers of drywall. I did a video on that a little while back. Best of luck!

Should you use Perimeter channels along edge of the ceiling? Or will that couple the wall to the hat channel? Thanks!

There is a specific system for hanging them. No don’t put them right along the edge.

Is your drywall touching the center beam in the ceiling? I've been curious how that works out since that effectively would cancel out decoupling.

It would except that my beam is a false beam wrapped around the actual beam. This creates a continuous decoupling across the entire ceiling. The beam video is coming;)

I am planning a double stud ceiling system identical to the walls you typically suggest. This would mean the inner ceiling is connected only on the inner wall framing. I don't see anyone doing this tho. This room is 12' x 12' so I'm wondering if I can get away with 2x6's ceiling joists at 24 OC to span that room. Again only attached to the inner walls.. Will this hold the weight of 2 sheets of 5/8 dry wall green glue and MLV. Some dead weight calculators say to use 2x10's but Im not walking on it. No other weight will be added on.. Have you seen this done before?

Yes, I do this in my designs a lot when I have the ceiling space. Basically, you can look at a typical span chart and air on the side of too much for the additional weight of the drywall. You can also ask a structural engineer at justanswer.com to verify that your structural will carry the beams. This is not engineering advice, but I would probably go closer to 16 or even 12 inches on center. You might even be able to get away with two by fours since the span is only 12 feet but again check your spam chart to make sure it works.

Also, what hat channel did you use? Can you please link it if possible? Thank you!

If you use a hat channel on a ceiling, are you able to attach lighting fixtures to the ceiling anymore? And if you did something like recessed lighting, then you'd have to drill through your two layers of drywall which would kind of defeat the purpose of having the two layers, right? So what do you do for light?
@soundproofyourstudio

You can attach lighting. You can use putty pads or flush mount your lighting in your acoustic clouds if it is a studio.

Here's a curveball...basement support beam for floor above..it's touching the cross beams. I guess you have to bulkhead around it and tie into hat channel...

Yes, totally doable just keep all soundproofing consistent around the beam
