Busan dialect is the most popular dialect in Korean (there are many others), and for many good reasons. These days many celebrities speak Busan dialect, and that has sparked a lot of people to begin studying it on their own. In this video you’ll learn all the basics of Busan dialect (부산 사투리), including grammar, vocabulary, phrases, intonation, pronunciation, and more. Since there are no official “rules” in dialects and each person can speak slightly differently, this video will give a good overview of the major points you’ll want to know to be able to speak in Busan dialect.

조용히 구독하며 영어 공부 중인 한국인입니다. 항상 영상 잘 보고 있습니다. 이번 영상에 오해의 소지가 있어서 댓글 남기게 되었습니다. 전 부산에서 태어나 35년 넘게 살아온 사람입니다. 의문형 '나' 와 '노'에 대해 오해가 좀 있으신거 같습니다. 예 아니오가 아닌 설명을 요구하는 질문에 '노'를 붙이는 게 아니라 누가, 언제, 어디서, 어떻게, 왜 라는 의문사가 들어가는 질문에 붙입니다. 단순히 맛있노? 하면 틀린 사투리고 자칫 특정 대통령을 비하하는 표현으로 오해받을 수 있습니다. 맛있나? 에 6가지 의문사를 붙여보면 누가 맛있노? @oneviwatara yes. Because there are many mountains in korea so each regions were isolated, diverse dialects developed even though korea is very small! Also busan(gyeong sang namdo) is like texas of Korea, but the accents sounds more like boston it tends to be fast and kinda noisy too.

Um, No. Texas is not cool, and a Texas accent does not make men sound masculine or women cute. Makes people sound stupid. A masculine accent for men in the US is Boston or New York, and a cute one for women is South/North Carolina.

My parents are immigrants so I learned my korean completely from them. Then when I went to college, all the other korean kids would always freak out when I spoke korean cause apparently my satoori is super extreme. Didn’t know what they were talking about till these videos lol

On top of that you also might be speaking an "outdated" version because your parents' version of the language is stuck in the year they emigrated...I know that's the case for me when I visit my mom's country and I say random words that haven't been used commonly since 1987 😅

My Mom is from Busan and my Dad is White, so my Dad learned all his Korean from my Mom. All too often he'll get some Korean he meets at church or something give him an strange look and be like "... why do you have a Busan accent?" I've equated it as being like a Korean who learned all their English from their Southern-accented spouse and saying "Howdy y'all!" when meeting other white people 😂

I thought I know basic Korean after learning 1,5 years. And I'd done pretty well in Seoul, too! Several times! I was feeling so good about my language skills. Then I came to Busan... and made some local friends :D The minute they forget they have a foreigner among them and switch from the standard to dialect, they lose me completely.

Busan is the second largest city in Korea, so I think dialect is also famous. It often appears in movies and dramas. I'm Korean, but I think Billy is better at Busan dialect because I'm from Seoul. Thank you for the fun video today. I want foreigners to know that Korean is fun.

Korean used to be a tonal language in the past. But it disapeared in most of dialects. But it still remained in Gyeongsangdo dialect.

Busan people also use the word "퍼뜩" which is equivalent to "빨리" (quickly) in standard Korean, and most non-Busan people have no idea what that is. Considering how Koreans love everything to be quick (빨리빨리), this can lead to many interesting situations. For example, (at a restaurant) when a Busan person says "퍼뜩 주이소~(Can I get my dish asap)" and others get 퍼뜩 as some kinds of 떡(rice cake). Then, they reply as "우린 그런 떡 없어요 (We don't have such kind of rice cake)."

I was born in Ulsan and lived 7 years in Busan. This vid is fun and well made. We normally use 표준어 More than 사투리. Elderly people, like in our parent's age or granny's age use 사투리's words and intonation, but not all of them. And young people living in Busan and Ulsan use some intonation of dialect but not much use 'dialet words'. Koreans like Busan dialet performed in Korea movie. Because it makes people can enjoy vivid acting. I like it too. But most of Koreans use Standard language. Only intonation is slightly different. So if you have in mind to trip to the Busan, Ulsan, Daegu , any place in Korea you dont have to worry about the Dialect.

Try watching Reply 1997, the first one in the series. If I remember right, the show was almost entirely done in the Busan dialect.

It also gave me slight (off topic) homesickness because Northern Sweden also shortens sentences, chances intonation, has odd words for everything, and could be seen by some Swedes as more attractive/manly for it. my grandma talks like this. i used to think “개안타” meant something about a dog. like “it’s ok, don’t mind the dog” (because 개 = dog, and my grandma had this very annoying dog that peed on my sister one day, all over her clothes, which prompted my grandmother to say to us “개안타, 개안타!” even though if you ask my sister it was NOT 개안타, not at all...)

If you hiss s S s S s S s S back and forth a few times with more and less pressure then listen again you will hear that ㅆ is like S and ㅅ is like s, meaning one has more air force. :)

I love this dialect. My Korean family is originally North Korean, but resettled in Busan during/after the war, so even though I did not even visit Busan until many of them passed away, I grew up hearing it all the time. At least when I showed up in Busan, locals simply switched to the standard Seoul dialect when dealing with me. I have heard stories though in Daegu (similar dialect) where visitors from Seoul were unwelcome on a business trip, but when one of them broke into the local dialect, they suddenly got the red carpet treatment.

Great video. I taught in Masan and picked up Kyungnam ssaturi. It's a very colorful dialect. Another one is halme and harbe for grandmother and grandfather.

The biggest characteristic of Gyeongsangnam-do dialect (basically including Busan dialect) is the use of -노, -나, -고, and -가 distinctly in questioning. Usually those whose mother tongue isn't the dialect fail to use it correctly. Also, there's no standard ways to write the dialect. So, the following examples are just in my personal way. Wh-question with verbs: -노 - 니 짐 머리 카노? (What are you talking about?) - 니 머 좋아하노? (What do you like?) Wh-question with 이다/아이다 (아니다 in standard KR): -고 - 이기 머고? (What's this?) -- "머고" often becomes "머꼬" as well. - 내가 와 한국 사람이 아이고? (Why am I not a Korean?) Yes-no-question with verbs: -나 - 부산 오고 싶나? (Want to come to Busan?) - 해운대 해수욕장 가 밨나? (Ever visited Haeundae beach?) Yes-no-question with 이다/아이다: -가 - 여어가 서울이가? (Is here Seoul?) - 그기 든킨 도나스 아이가? (Isn't that Dunkin Doughnut?)

wow... I am born and raised in Ulsan. but there are some expression I never heard of in my life.. especially about '강구' as in a roach. Also I thought that the pronunciation of "쌀" was the yardstick to seperate Northern part of 경상도 from Southern part of 경상도.. like the pronunciation of "pen" does between southerner and Yankee in US...BTY Your Korean is very impressive.

daegu dialect is more friendly than busan haha even im from daegu. i can feel busan has strong accent

I had a lot of wow moments while watching this one! I just watched Reply 1994 recently and I learned about the concept of 사투리 there. Most of the characters came from Masan which is also in the same province as Busan, I believe. It seems that their accents made sense to me after watching this video. I missed the series because of this. Thank you for this one! Hoping to see a Jeollado version of this. I also liked their accent as well 😊

Thankyou so much. Awesome video. I moved to busan and then lived in daegu, tongyeong, jeju, changwon, and kimcheon. The dialects really threw me, but were super fun once I got the hang if them. Please do more dialect videos!

@@JXEns 아, 그런 냄새 나왔어요. ㅋㅋ 저는 1992~93 년에 대전 선교부에서 봉사했어요. We went with our kids a couple of years ago and visited a friend in 포항. Someday I want to go to 통영! It looks so gorgeous. 혹시 Hadden 자매님과 Ogilvie 자매님을 아세요?

This is really fun to watch!😁 I think you should make "One Busan Saturi a week". It will help viewers to learn Busan saturi for fun.😀👍 Just one word a week. Then many Koreans will be watching this program too. There are many Koreas want to learn English watching utube.

I love the gyeongsang dialect so much. It really does sound cool, straight to the point, and really fun to speak. Also it’s so cool how majority of these expressions were familiar to me considering bts used them in their song: Paldogangsan (Satoori rap). I love learning about satoori.
