Indiana has probably the most diverse accents of all states, considered Chicago is just up north and Kentucky is just south. It's weird but even people here in southern Indiana all have different accents I can pick up on. It's like a twangy Kentuckyian-Midwestern deal I've been told.

My mother's family is Kentuckiana. Only a few generations before, the family was in Kentucky. But my mother was born and raised in Lafayette. She kept much of her strong Hoosier accent, though, until she went to college to become a speech pathologist. Even then, when our family moved to a wealthier Jewish suburb of Chicago, people thought she was Southern. On occasion, she still will say 'feesh' and 'cooshion'.

I’m from Connersville Indiana, and we have Kentucky accents. Instead of doing the southern draw we cut our words shorter than normal, if that makes sense. The short draw is usually at the beginning of the word instead of the end like you would hear in Tennessee.

Osceola, N. Indiana here! Wakarusa is pronounced Wakarusi here for some reason. I grew up calling a couch a "damport". We are a bit more nasaly up here with a very noticeable Chicago accent in a lot of us. My great grandmother raised her kids in a log cabin in Baugo Crick. No running water, she warshed in the crick :)

Talking now about the whole series of these videos - I was born and raised in Hammond, Indiana, even though I moved 28 years ago. I still say groshry store, sack, and remember my granny calling the couch a davenport. I spent the first couple of years in Utah wondering if there was a difference between a canteloupe and a muskmellon. I had to get used to the lunch/dinner and dinner/supper thing. I call the fridge an icebox quite often. My mom still says "warsh." However, we don't say "crick."

Moved to Indiana 20+ years ago, and I hear this kind of talk all the time. Mangos, davenport, sweeper; Krogers, Aldis, and even Walmarts. Living near Kendallville, around here it is called, "Kendaville." And for those offended, what in the world is your problem? Why not let people talk the way they want, rather than according to some effete snob's version of what is "proper"?

I hear euphemisms like the ones in these videos from people all over the state. Some I admit are kind of rare, but I've heard sweeper, melk, pop, all the ___er, and several others. Most of the people I know from southern Indiana, don't really talk like this; you're much more likely to find Kentuckian accents, though. My mom is an English teacher so she raised me to speak standard American English. Her mother, on the other hand, has some fun colloquialisms: "tumped over, warsh, blinky milk, etc."

I've grown up in Northern Indiana since I was 2. They did not pronounce a lot of the tricky cities the way I pronounce them. Especially Kendallville (we say Ken-del-ville), Auburn (Aw-burn), Indianapolis (Indian aa po lus). However they did pronounce Lafayette the same way I do. The last two southern cities I have never heard of before. At the end she does pronounce Mishiwalka (I love close to this city) and Shipshewana (sp?) the way I do. Havn't heard of the third one though.

It does *not* come from Native American or from Amish dialects but from the early settlers (German, English) and subsequent immigrants from Ohio, Kentucky, and elsewhere over the years. If you live in Indianapolis and know people who live there, odds are they are some of the many new generations of settlers. Go outside of Indy and you will find plenty of vernacular. Google "Dialect Survey Maps and Results" and you will see that Indiana is a mixture of many dialects.

I wish they'd say where in Indiana these people are from because Indiana has a lot of dialectical differences from north to south and even east to west. In general there's the Northeast, The Region, Central, Indy, Southeast, Southwest, and South Central Indiana. To make a guess, I'd say these people are from Central Indiana, probably near Lafayette. And rural.

My great grandmother who was born here in 1922 would pronounce the L's. It wasn't a word they would have grown up hearing so they said the word how it's spelled.

This entire series is plagued in the comments by Hoosiers whining "I never said that! I never heard that! This is all wrong!" Read through enough comments and you see there's an overlap from everyone of what they have and havn't heard. Clearly this series did a great job of averaging the silly speech patterns of the nearly 7 million Indiana residents. Maybe some of these Hoosiers should take a little trip around their own state once in awhile instead of Florida.
