Dr. Colin Gorrie, Old English and Latin Fellow of the Ancient Language Institute, introduces the brand-new Old English program at ALI, and walks Ryan Hammill and Jonathan Roberts through the opening pages of his new Old English Oerberg-inspired graded reader, Lingua Anglica Antiqua Per Se Illustrata, the tale of Osweald the talking bear, who wanders through medieval England and encounters various slices of Anglo-Saxon life.
Learn more about Dr. Gorrie's work preparing a Direct Method textbook for Old English, as well as about the online Old English classes at the Ancient Language Institute.

As a speaker of both modern English and Hochdeutsch, I found the oration very easy to understand. The text seems more difficult to read. Interestingly, I usually find it is the opposite for me with modern Germanic languages such as Plattdeutsch in which I have an easier time reading than listening.

Hi, how old is your Old English? It´s obviously pre 1066 AD, but is it pre Viking invasions from Denmark and Norway in the beginning of the 9th century AD? Of course Old Norse is strongly related to the languages of the Angles and Saxons who moved from North Germany to England after the fall of the Romans in England.

On the later side. Dr. Gorrie is aiming for around the year 1000 in Wessex. One exception: the diphthongs ie/īe which are only found earlier. By the time he's aiming for they’d have been mostly y/ȳ. But because many dictionaries use the Early West Saxon spellings, he uses it as a kind of standard.

43:40 I have heard þ being pronounced as ð sometimes if it’s between vowels in the mibble of a worm, but do you mean that the letter ð is sometimes pronounced þ? I noticed that the MS text of Beowulf was sometimes not entirely consistent in writing maþelode / maðelode, or even Bēowulf / Bīowulf.

The reason this sounds so strange is that modern English is only about 40% English it's 35--40% French and the rest Latin, Greek and other languages its a hybrid Germanic/Romance language the readings on this video sound like a children's record played backwards

Psssssst! Can I pass on a note about a modern Engkish preposition? One of the group said "beginners TO Old English".... the correct and logical preposition in Modern English is "beginners IN Old English". Americans' usage of prepositions is very non standard and non ligical. Apologies for my critical note. Thank you for the content! G Ire

You are most likely mispronouncing allot of it, ANGLISKSONS means english sons there are allot of vowels that you are not sounding out correctly you have to do some more studies you need to find some old record of speaking or some kind of glossary or some dictionary that will give you some idea of how to pronounce it
