One of THE most common things I get asked is, “How can I be more confident and speak more meetings?”
While this is a challenge not limited to women, the question seems to mainly come from women who work in male-dominated industries.
If you feel that you struggle with being heard in meetings or that you want more confidence then this video will help. In it I share practical tips and strategies that I train my own clients, and that you can apply immediately at work.
The ability to to be a valuable participant in meetings is a MUST have skill that is vital to your career advancement. It can also strengthen your influence, and it will more likely get you noticed, promoted and recognised for your leadership potential.
You can't afford not to level up your meeting skills and confidence.
In the comments below let me know what you struggle most with in meetings - do you get cut off and interrupted all the time?
Do you find it hard to even interject and share your ideas?
Do you preface everything you’re about to say and apologise for taking up the space like “I’m sorry to interrupt the flow of conversation, but...”
Let me know what you do and let’s tackle this together.

TECHNIQUE: One way to make sure you get heard is to wait for a pause or silent moment. If someone starts talking at the same time, advise the room that when that person is done speaking, that you have something to say. Be ready to speak and jump right on in when that person is done. A second way, is to raise your hand to let it be known that you have something to say. You may have to raise it a few times. Once the room knows that you have something to say, they will get on your side and make sure you have a chance to speak. At this point, they can't wait to hear what it is that you have to say which will be encouraging giving you more confidence to speak. You only have to say excuse me to get their attention never having to apologize. Speak, knowing that what you have to say is valuable and they will receive it as just that. Speak, not caring what anybody is going to think because if it matters to you, thats all that matters.

English is my second language and I can use it in above average level. The biggest challenge for me is how to explain things specially technical ones to non technical members of the meeting. It takes some brain power to think for the technical solution(solved inside the head using native language) then translate them into English. In some occasions it could make me look as if I don't know enough answers because of stuttering and a lot of filler words (uhmm). Oh those bad memories! 😅🤢

I like that this didn’t turn into a male bashing session. Women get cut off by women as they are by men. Women should speak up when they are interrupted, without anger, BUT even if the anger is there, they should not hold back because of it and speak up anyway; they’ll get better at it with time. - A male listener

Thanks for sharing these constructive ideas and agreed - never respond in anger. I recently posted an abridged version of this video on LinkedIn. It was interesting to see both men and women writing comments about them experiencing this problem - even ones in senior leadership positions.

Your videos are quite useful, thank you for sharing! The trouble I face often times is either I second guess myself about what I want to communicate in a meeting or my thoughts are way ahead of what I am actually communicating. Because of the mismatch I sometimes find it difficult to speak coherently.

Watched this long time ago. Never thought a time would come for me to dig this up and saver every bit of it for my next meeting! So very helpful!! Recently I've been quite frustrated with one of our meetings where I was constantly cut off by one of my colleagues. After a while, I found myself feeling dreadful to even go to the meeting anymore. Now examing it, it's really like what you said - a male dominated (I'm the only female of us 4), and it seems ok among the three of them. I will try your technique in our next meeting. Thank you so much for providing so so much values in your videos!

This seems to work for me... 1: Find out what the "Milk" of the meeting is. 2: Find out who are the key players this "Milk" matters too most. 3: Research that "Milk" like your life depends on it 4: *Compress* and *Simplify* that "Milk" into away the key players will understand 5: Every word you use needs to be important, direct with no fluff 6: Be short and sweet when giving your opinion. After 3 or so meetings you wont need to fight anymore for your opinion because the key players will ask you directory for it... 🍼

Awesome presentation and skill. What I felt people dont speak is because of 2 reasons: 1. They don't do homework before going in a meeting thus they lack the information or knowledge of the agenda and subject. - You will feel confident if you know your audience, have enough information and have done your homework. 2. They do think before sharing anything what if I am proved to be wrong. - people should understand, Most of the time if not always, in any meeting people want to have your idea and get corrected.

Cutting off during a meeting or one person leading the meeting is just regular in our meetings. I always felt like when I have to say something it either get interrupted or change the topic.
