Want to learn how to spearfish? This is a beginners guide to learning spearfishing, focusing on taking your first shot and target practice in the ocean. If you've followed the series this far, you've come a long way and today we're going to be combining everything we've learnt by freediving down to the ocean floor and taking our first shot with our speargun.
Starting simple, today is all about getting used to your speargun and the gear, and target practice.

*KEY POINTS* 0:14 _Holding the Rifle_ 1. 0:19 - Hold like a pistol, not rifle. do NOT hold the barrel - hand will get caught in mono line. Don't keep close to your face unless you want a bruise + broken visor! 2. 0:56 Hold your speargun outstretched, with one hand. If supporting with second hand, put second hand on first hand. 1:23 _Target Practice_ After underwater target set up with weights at a distance of ~2m: 1. Breathe up, dive to sea floor. Prop yourself up on the sand/rock. 2. Relax, straighten your arm with speargun in dominant hand, look down barrel. Once relaxed and aligned with target, pull trigger. 3. 1:54 KEEP ARM STRAIGHT! Vital for accuracy. 4. Keep practicing. After practice, extend distance of underwater target to 4-6m. 5. Be sure to have float line + float attached to gun.

Nice. In Winter when the fish are asleep this is probably a good activity. It might also be a good time to get your weight right.

Went out diving on New Year’s Day and used a speargun for the first time, managed to spear a nice size butterfish 🤤

There's no secret technique. It's all about how much oxygen your blood can carry. You get better at it by just holding your breath a lot. Don't try to do any breathing techniques as that is exactly how people get black outs and pass out. How do you increase your bench press? You bench press.
