Gregory Pierquet I am only 5’2” (female) and I split the same size wood, with big knots, using the same type of splitting maul (mine is just as dull). I usually set several pieces upright in my work area and just walk around splitting them all right where they stand. It goes a lot faster this way.

Great video! 😃. Thank you so much. I have a 15 year old son and being a single Divorced mother it has been hard for me to teach him the ways of keeping himself busy to grow healthy and strong minded but with KZfaq videos like this it has helped him fill the gaps that he was missing from a good male roll model. I’m happy to say that he has been busy learning from these kind of videos and others and it Has brought calmness to his spirit. Young men like him need skills like this to understand their strength and other ways to release stress. I pray that men like yourself continue to make videos like this to help us single mothers like myself to help our sons. A lot of men in our society have left the responsibility to us mothers but with Gods love a mother never gives up when she has the good Lord in her heart. Again many thanks and God Bless you and all who support your Chanel

Started splitting wood in the 60s, went from an axe to a sledge and a wedge then a monster maul, next a 8lb splitting maul. Now I have a splitting axe with wedges built into it and a hydraulic splitter. I just enjoy being in the game. Anyone willing to work making firewood is number 1 in my book.

Find someone whose land has suffered beaver flooding. They often will have lots of dead-standing trees, all dry. If you can cut them down without getting them too wet (like now, when everything is frozen solid) you can gather a winter’s worth of firewood to heat your house. You might need to get insurance to do it for other people, so ask your insurance agent.

@amigodawn17284 жыл бұрын
More importantly is to check out the videos that show you the wrong way to do it. This is because many accidents are caused with axes by missing the block of wood and the axe going into your leg, foot etc. So you need to learn how to stand correctly, at the side of the block and not in front of it. Ensure that the block is not unbalanced before you hit it. Check out videos on here about chopping tinder from blocks. There's a safe way and a dangerous way. Many tendons have been cut through by holding the wood with one hand and chopping with axe, in other hand. Stay safe.

Anyone in a similar situation , get a tire. The wider the tread and smaller the sidewall the better it will work. Stand a bunch of the sticks that need splitting further inside the tire and whale away. The sticks will stand until you have them the size needed.

Get a couple tires and lay them on the ground with a HARD surface under them. Put the round of wood inside, then split it into pieces while INSIDE THE TIRE. That way, you aren't chasing and repositioning the wood all the time!

I’ve just had a look at the Crazy Russian Hacker on KZfaq, who suggests laying a log on its side, propped up on another at right angles to it, like a T. Have the bar of the T nearest you, . Check your reach distance and swing at the log that makes the stem of the T, which is further away, feet wide apart of course. I agree with him that the maul doesn’t get stuck in the log so much, and the log doesn’t fly sideways, and if you miss you’d hit the other log before you hit your feet.

@shermanhofacker44283 жыл бұрын
That is the best wood splitting profile for a maul. I would have it somewhat sharper, but the slightly convex cheeks enter the wood and spreads the fibers apart without sticking. Some post oak splits easier than some other, often they split best with the rounds sitting as they grew others with the root side up.

If your axe is getting stuck you can a cheap box of crayons on Amazon. Melt them down and poor it into one of those big silicone ice cube makers. After you have a big wax chunk you can rub it on the cheeks of the axe. It will keep the axe from getting stuck really bad.

Gently tap in *two steel wedges* on diameter line off center from heartwood. Use 8lb sledge hammer on *hard* surface. Apply bungees after quartering, avoid fly off and tiring bending over and picking up pieces. Avoid tiring pull outs of maul and sharp blade swinging towards body. Hearing protection. The colder the air temp the easier the split. Throw pieces (all still standing with bungees around) in two-wheeler large wheelbarrow.

Buy TWO 5-6lb steel wedges and an 8lb sledge hammer. You'll need 2 in case you bury one. Mauls are for big advanced guys. Eye & ear protection, steel-on-steel is noisy. A camp ax is a good idea to debark with. Then, you'll get your kindling splitter and 5lb hammer.
