Thanks dude. My grandparents were trying to dig a large rock out of their garden and I begged them to stop before they keeled over. I'll take care of this for them tomorrow!

Thanks so much for this! Removing a rock garden from the previous owner of my house. Probably 20 boulders like this. My back is gonna hate me, here we go!

I had my neighbor ask me to break rocks in the front yard of his house as I have a breaking hammer. I have a metabo 10 kilogram 23 joule impact jackhammer. It's designed to break concrete to about 100 to 120 mm. It can do thicker. Then again you need a still bigger breaker. One that's 40 to 60 joules of impact. The rocks were quite soft material and it took me one hour just on one rock. So I told my neighbor it needs a bigger jackhammer. I did the breaking in bits just chipping away. Then one of the rocks was so hard it was like quartz. I then thought I need to drill holes to split the rock which brings me here. I was thinking of using rods slightly larger than the drill bit and purchase a drill bit long enough to go very deep like you have done. These wedges are even a better idea than what I was thinking of doing. Great job. Thankyou for the upload.

You should set up your camera landscape.

When you said, "put the wedges in the way you want the crack to go", I could not see 'which way' you were actually putting the wedges in. It would have been better if the camera operator had got in close. Do you find that the rubber rings holding the pieces together eventually get destroyed while the wedges are being used? I wonder if loosly winding some copper wire around the middle would work, when the rubber ring breaks?

why does everybody keep hitting all the wedges after the stone splits. Just drive one set in and remove the rest then you wont chance losing all of the wedges under the stone
@chehystpewpur475411 ай бұрын
because it splits the stone farther. so u can get a wedge or pry bar in and get the broken piece out of there. its pretty hard to lose these things they are bent at the top to hold themself in place and not fall in.

What do call that bar that you insert.?

Super great video.thx!!! Question: how deep did you drill?? (Feather and wedge are not that long...)
@timbearder405611 ай бұрын
Hi, I drilled about 4 inch, just enough for the feather and wedge plus a bit more. Just drill slightly past the length of the insert you buy

For my fellow Yanks, 10mil=00.01 inch/00.254mm (If my math is correct)

is it important to drill deep? How deep/shallow is recommended to drill?
@timbearder40563 ай бұрын
Drill down just an inch or so longer that the feather and wedge so it does not bottom ou

Watched a rock mason once . He had a rock like twice the size of yours. he looked it over for a while, then took his 10 lb sledge hammer, popped it about 10 times and it broke in two. He seemed to know just where to hit it.
@SANTAMUERTEXIII3 жыл бұрын
Try doing that on a blue granite rock 😂😂😂
@AltruisticWarrior Жыл бұрын
Definitely doable with some types of rocks but yah... good luck with some of that granite. I use a sledge all day to break rusted manholes free. I can swing a 10lb overhead with one hand and still manage to break a very sturdy lid. That said, thought I could do the same with some large granite boulders... I looked like an idiot trying to kill two stones with one bird.
