How to Split Models in Blender | Bisect Tool

Splitting models into two separate objects in blender isn't as hard as it seems! This is an extremely useful skill to have in your 3D kitbashing arsenal. Keep in mind-- the bisect tool only works through selected vertices, so make sure to press A if everything isn't selected in edit mode! I just got a new 3D Printer as a gift for myself but it requires you to use their specific slicer. One of the STLs I've had my eye on for a bit was slightly too big to be printed in one piece and this has single-handedly saved me hours of frustration.

i had to set replay speed to 25% but this actually helped me make my first usable model. some go pro mount for NVG on thingiverse didnt list what models it was for - sure enough after printing i realized it didnt fit mine. Moved bracket over using this video - printing it when the ender gets free. Thank you.

Holy shit thank you. I was trying so hard to create two pieces of this model. Problem is, it was a detailed Sculpture. So any edits were temporarily crashing Blender it was so bad. I'd manually done this, but it was a MESS. Anytime I tried to find an answer it was basically just extrude/delete and then the fill step similar to the end of this video. Which would be no problem on a simple square. But a sculpt with thousands of faces? Absolute nightmare. That Bisect tool is a godsend thanks.

Yeah, I really dislike tutorial videos that start with "Yeah, hey guys, I'm going to show you how to do X", and then go into a little theme music and title splash, then "Okay, if you like this video, don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe, and hit that bell notification", and then go into a description of what Blender is, maybe a lot of ums and ahs and other things that should have been edited out, and then five minutes into the video finally give the ten second information I was looking for in the first place...

another tip: if your shape has "holes" within the newly opened area that you don't want joined to the surface, you can use Alt-F to do a Face Fill.

I recommend using a boolean difference and a custom plane to cut! I show how to do that ~2:26 in this video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqddfZB5vtKvm30.htmlsi=CH009WUMNaV3grw2&t=146)! It's sorta my go to method for cutting stuff these days and gives you a lil' more control with the cut.

Click and hold on the knife tool icon and the bisect tool should be in the little menu that appears! It's hidden behind the knife tool for some reason.

Sometimes if the edges aren't flat it can be tricky. Maybe, try to move the cut a little and it could make a cleaner cut?

hmm... for me it does still-- I'm using blender version 3.2.1 though so maybe there was an update. I believe you can do the same thing by clicking one of the edges (with edge select mode enabled), going to select, select loops, and then "edge loops."

If you change your view to orthographic (click on one of the axis on the compass looking widget in the top right corner), it should lock whatever you're doing on that axis!

OUTSTANDING easy to follow tutorial, I have managed to repeatedly slice models following your steps, thank you. Is it possible to connect a bisect path, for eample say you started at top of arm like you did, but only move bisect half way down the have the next bisect slice all the way to the right?

These days I use a plane, give it a little thickness with a solidify modifier, and then use boolean difference to cut with that object.

To my knowledge-- not with the bisect tool. Instead I would make a really thin box (or "solidify" a plane a few millimeters) and cut using a boolean difference! Then go into edit mode, select all, hit "P," and then separate by loose parts.

Hello i have an issue it says (Cannot rip selected faces) i'm trying to cut a 3D photo scan mesh of a rock that i made.

Hello! You may want to try to convert the mesh from Tris to Quads. Select the whole object, go to edit mode, press Ctrl + F for the mesh menu, then select tris to quads. Apparently the tool doesn't like tris. Also, idk how much that will mess up your scan. So, before trying that create a copy of it.

Can the loop select inner region help with selections of parts of models that are clipping into each other for easy selection?

I normally do separate by loose parts! In edit mode press "p," and then select "loose parts." That should make everything that isn't merged into their own object. Hopefully that works!

You posted this tutorial a while ago, and I can understand you cannot be available for answering about it all your life long:) However, I wonder why I cannot move the second object (the arm) which has been created. Everything works fine, the cut is clean and I can even erase the arm, but I cannot move it away from the body. Could it be because of the pre-existing animation rig?

haha it's my duty! Hmm... you did the separate by loose parts thing yeah? Is it attached to an armature? If it is you may need to delete the armature modifier of that object.

Hey there! I've been trying to do this in Beldner for a helmet I want to 3D print, however it doesn't select one half of the helmet after bisecting and doing select loop inner-regions, rather it just selects random parts. I can;t seem to figure it out, maybe you can help?

hmm... What happens when you select everything ("A") and then separate by loose parts ("P")?

@@ZhatFatScav It still doesn't after cutting? Darn! I'd try slightly moving the cut or restarting blender. Sometimes little things like that can help.
