@@shakenmake I am new to tinkercad so all of your tutorials are helping but I would like to know how to fill in a hollow object. For instance say you have a hollow car (or something that's not an isometric shape, I can do those) and you want to fill in all of the inside of the car so its a solid object. Is this possible to do? I would love to learn how.

Karen, if I understand correctly you can do this by switching the property of the object to be 'solid' rather than a 'hole'. This would require your entire object to be grouped if it is made up of smaller parts. Just done it and its Brilliant, so much better than the other way I learned. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 stars....... I have just subscribed to you, if you keep making videos like this on tinkercad i ll keep following you, they are sharp short and to the point and work , no waffle just good training videos. something that is severely lacking in the tinkercad world, I have even checked out the lyndas course and your video is better. you learn more in 2 minutes that 20 on theirs. This splitting for me is one of the biggest pains, im redesigning a complete K40 laser to a massive bed and I have been trying to get things done like this and up until now I so hated the other version I learnt . I just copied the part and hacked away on one version and then on another version and eventually got their . I have to split parts to add additional parts in , its not for printing , its for changing the width on a part of the depth or length etc. Maybe add some more tags as its not just about splitting, its cutting in half perfectly . This has really helped me . Thank you

You should use the align function to make sure it's in the middle.

It doesn't necessarily have to exactly bisect the model, since both pieces will just be put together at the end anyway

That is the best way i think of showing this thank you, the other version i tried confused the hell out of me, thanks, Nice presentation as well. Nice and Smart chap. What would be better if is tinkercad got their head out of the sand pit or another place and just have a split button defined by you marking somewhere.

This is a great split. Does anyone else just draw a very thin rectangle and then subtract that from the object to split. In my pre millennium days of solid modeling I would just draw a rectangle that was .001 inches thick and subtract that from the object. It was like a virtual laser cutter.

There are only black handles in the Workplane to do this duplication by sliding the hole object around the opposite half. How do you do this when the cut is parallel to the Workplane surface? (ie, I want a top half and bottom half, split to add an extension in the middle. I realize I could flip the original object 90° then use your technique here but this creates other unwanted overhangs. How do you flip the hole in the vertical direction?

The same technique can be used, there is a white square in the center of the shape you can click and drag to manipulate the shape's height.

Yes that works, but what do you put the two halves together with? In my experience, there isn't a glue that will bond as well as making it in one piece.

Printing in one piece is always more ideal. When needed, I use a glue called BSI-157H. You can get it on Amazon, it comes with an instant cure spray

Helpful video, but I have a question. Are the terms different in FDM printing as opposed to resin? What you call overhang I know as "islands". Overhang are parts that hang out over the print bed or vat, but are still printable but might require supports so they don't droop or drop off.

That's a great question. I do not currently have experience in FDM printing, although it is something I'd like to get into. Did you figure this out?

I'm also only into resin, but from what I've read and seen on videos I believe I am correct. Overhangs are parts that are connected to the print but "hang" out over the print bed, but within an acceptable angle. Without support they could break off during printing causing a failed print. "Islands" are just that: a piece just sitting on thin air with no connection to the print itself. Think of a mini with an arm, holding a sword, stretched out horizontally. The arm from shoulder to hand might print fine. The pommel of the sword tho hangs below the level of the printable arm. It has no connection to the print. An "Island". They show up in the slicer as little bumps or pieces just hanging around. They will be printed and that's the danger of them. If they get loose from the FEP they'll float around in the resin possibly getting between the print bed and LCD and can puncture the FEP. With filament printing an island leads to stringing all over the print job starting at the point of origin of the island then to the print head's next destination repeating with each pass over the island.

Hi. I've tried following your steps but I cant seem to split a stl file I exported from Geogebra. After grouping, its still the whole object. :-(

When I hit Group the hole box is still there along with half the original object and it appears to be hollow instead of solid.

Use the "D" key on your keyboard when the object is selected. I remember it by thinking "D" for "Drop"

For a moment I thought you didn't explain how the one half was deleted, it was automatic. For a moment I thought you had to press the delete key.

Yes that will also work in most scenarios but will not work when an object has text on the surface as part of the design. This method ensures no text gets flipped.

This is an insanely complicated procedure. Not your fault, of course (thanks for explaining it!) but I think for anyone not yet invested in Tinkercad, the message is: don't use it. At least not for splitting objects.

I will also say I made this video 4 years ago, there could be a much better option available currently, I haven't been in tinkercad for a few years now
