I show you some differences between real and fake DS games. Note that there are many different fakes out there that all look different, but if you see any of these differences in a game you're looking to buy, then look elsewhere. Don't get duped on Ebay or even at Gamestop. ALWAYS ask to see the cart and use discretion.

The CE logo is for PAL cartridges. If you're in the UK and don't see that logo, it's more than likely a cart from a different country or it's a fake.

The European games say "seal of quality", the seal is round, and it is on the left side of the cart. They look quite different to the American copies of DS games

Can confirm, "Seal of Quality" is normal on Euro carts. Left side, font is tiny, clear and sharp.

The XXXX in NTR-XXXX-USA on the front needs to be the same as the first 4 characters on the back too. The Pokémon Diamond cart in the video has NTR-AL2P-USA on the front, but SEO1 on the back.

One more thing about fonts. Of the two main counterfeit types I've seen from China there's one with a obviously wrong font for NTR-005 but there's also one where they use a font that's pretty close to Futura Condensed. Look very closely at the stroke of the R. On authentic cartridge, the stroke is perfectly straight. On the fake ones, there's a very subtle kink...kind of like the bend in the stroke of the R in Arial. On those carts, the Nintendo logo looks perfect so you have to look carefully. Also, the fake font is slightly lighter than the Futura one Nintendo uses.

And for those looking at European (USK/PEGI-rated) copies of games (because personally, I own several US games and spot many more on fleamarkets despite living in Europe): the seal actually does say "Seal of Quality", though not in a single line because for some reason, the seal is a circle over here. Just thought to maybe point that out. Other than that, this video was really useful even for myself - I had some doubts about some games I picked up a while ago.

I have that exact copy of Pokemon Diamond, and I can't progress through the game because it freezes whenever I engage a battle. Furthermore, it only works on a DS lite. If I try to play it on a DSi or 3DS, I'll get an error. The plastic is extremely flimsy and the housing is held together with screws. How do I know this? The sticker keeps peeling off. Why do these games even exist?

well of course unless it's an emulation but why would it be an emulation at all? I have a pokemon Pearl and Platinum copy, and both are legit, sadly the sticker peeled off my Pearl copy, but dang I've been playing that for years to catch em all... I traded between gen 3 after I 100% completed Gen 3 (yeah and when I say 100% completed gen 3 I mean caught every pokemon in every game and filled the pokedex) I had to do some trades cause not 100% of the pokemon in FRLG and R.S are catchable in their individual game, especially Fire Red and Leaf Green that required me to Trade between Gen 3 to Fire Red and Leaf Green after completing Ruby and Sapphire's Pokedex, so I could complete the pokedex, yeah oh and I don't have Diamond so I cannot say I have 100% completed gen 4 nor do I have Soul Silver, so I'll have to search for Pokemon Diamond and Soul silver

Thanks for this video, it's very helpful. A year and a half or so ago, I bought a Super Mario 64 DS game on eBay with just the cartridge and now I know why there was no box. It took a while before my two completed files (and 3rd just started file) were erased, and when they were, I took a look at the cartridge and noticed everything you said in the video. Again, thanks for the video, it was very helpful! :D

I also noticed that the serial number four letters in the front NTR-XXXX-USA didn't match with the first four letters in the back. Seal of Quality sticker always has full "Seal of Quality" text in EUR versions and only "Seal" in the USA version.

I bought a Super Princess Peach cartridge online very cheaply. Knowing from the price it was going to be a fake, but it stumped me when I received it in the post and I wondered at first if it was a refurbished cartridge. Thanks to your video I saw it was a fake (obviously I kinda knew that), but it is the best fake DS cart I had ever seen. The seal of quality was correct, clean and crisp. The engraving on the back was spot on The NTR code was correct. All copyright and trademarks were on there. Numbers and letters above the gold contact points were present. The sticker was of high quality and wasn't wonky. Only 2 things were off on the back: The serial number on the back didn't match the front and the print was on a very slight incline. The 'o' of Nintendo was perfectly round, when the real Nintedo 'o' has an elongated center.

with the Pokemon Gen 4/5 games you can actually shine a flashlight through the cartridge and see that it is translucent and slightly red.

I don't think bootleggers would see it as worth the effort. Fakes are made to fool and make some quick cash, not 100% imitate the real thing.

More things to add is that the bottom of the label will always have the same four numbers/alphabet(set of 4/middle ones) be the first 4 things in written/printed in the back of the cartridge, #2 sometimes bottom left of label is curved cut, it should always be a clean straight cut, #3 best for last! the cartridge itself! in the very top edge there's a small detail that collectors don't even notice and no bootlegger can recreate, therefore never do it, so it'll always be smooth if it's a fake.

Just a note, “Seal of Quality” appears on PAL versions of the games, but the seal is still shiny and all the other aspects are the same.

Extra little tip: If the little arrow on the bottom of the cartridge that shows what direction it goes into the DS is actually engraved into the plastic, the game is 100% fake. EVERY fake DS game does that. The official ones all have the little arrow "glazed" onto the cartridge, if that makes sense.

I bought Pokemon Omega Ruby for 3DS and the black lettering on the back is oddly compact, yet its rare a 3DS game is illegitimate and it also works fine with features like Pokebank, trading, and whatnot. Also everything else seems to match up perfectly. Either its a really well done bootleg, or sometimes there is a slight manufacturing glitch (which wouldnt surprise me).

guys there's another way to tell if that's a fake game , BUT YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE FAKE GAME ITSELF , so when you're in the game , go to the part with music , close your ds without turning it off , you may hear some garbling or something like that , this means that the game hasn't shut like the ds while nintendo-improved game say a message sometimes like yoshi's island when he gets out his tongue or with sm64ds when mario says you goodbye , so watch out

I’m amazed I’ve never thought of the idea of a fake ds game being sold on sites like EBay. I purchased a copy of Pokémon Diamond awhile back for only 7 dollars with the box and manual and everything and just checked if it was a fake not even considering the idea it could be for such an insane price, luckily it is and I have you to thank for helping me confirm!

I remember going to an in-door swapmeet and getting a Super Mario Advance game from a game stand. At the time, I had no idea that games could be fake, so I got my dad to buy it. So I'm playing for a good half an hour so I decide to save. I go back to playing it later, my save is gone. I thougth it was a glitch so I shrugged it off. Saved again, lost it again,etc. I was so frustrated with the game having erased all my saves, I think I just got gave it away or something.

One time I bought animal crossing happy home designer for the 3ds from target and when I took it out I noticed that the cartridge looked like an old ds cartridge and the logo sticker felt different from the rest of my games logo sticker. I put it in and it turns out it was a dumb cooking game! The people at target said it was a manufacturing mistake but I don't think so -.-

There are a LOT of fakes out there. Always check them out if you're buying used, even at Gamestop or specialty store like that. Glad it brought it to your attention.

Another good thing to remember is the serial numbers can be checked here arcade-history.com if you punch in the serial number off your bomberman, and the website says your serial is for new super mario. then you have a fake.

All the fake ones I've seen have the wrong font for patent pending. Real ones are all Futura condensed. But they're getting good at lining up the circuit board markings with the slats. Some have an incorrect Nintendo logo which is strange...not hard to track down a vector for that. It's amazing how that get some aspects spot-on and then mess up the rest.

Notice the codes written on the back of the cartridge and on the bottom of the label. Often if one is fake, the codes do not match. I have used copy from Gamestop which I wasn't aware was a fake until now.It had the following problems. -cartridge looks different and of odd color -missing code on the back of the cartridge

The European versions of the cartradges have the 'Seal of Quality' on them. So if an American cartradge has that seal, its a fake.

Bought a fake Pokemon Heart Gold. It was pretty obvious, as the cartridge sticker was nit shiny at all, the cartridge was grey, the sticker was wonky, the sticker was really dark and unreadable. The only in game problem which threw me off the most was the coin game. Most fakes can't play it, and are unable to trade up generation. If you see one like this then the best thing to do is message the seller. The only thing they can do is give a refund. If this helps anyone then I'm glad to help.

I once bought a fake pokemon heartgold game in offerup. I still have it, since the game works, and I can't sell it since is against offerup rules. The good thing is that I only spent 12 dollars on it. The weird thing is that this cartridge shows up as Star wars lethal alliance when I first insert the cartridge.

Unfortunately, it's a pretty big problem, to the point of have to check EVERY game you by on the 2nd hand market. It's usually limited to Pokemon, Mario, and other valuable and rare titles.

A while back I got new super mario bros. and pokemon platinum on ebay. The game cases are very fake(the pokemon platinum case isn't holographic as it should be, and the mario one was printed poorly) but the cartridges seem to check out in every way, and they work just fine.(I got them in 2016 and still no file corruption or anything) Is this a common thing or are my game cartridges just very very convincing and still fake?

Pro Tip: Original labels are kinda screen printed and have a mini setoff, while bootlegs are just cheap stickers.

I recently bought a used copy of Pokemon Sun and was worried that it might be fake because this was my first 3ds game purchase and I was not too familiar with the cartridges as I am with older ones like the Gameboy Avance and DMG. (I'm also extremely cautious to make sure I don't get ripped off.) And thanks to this video I managed to determine it was real. Thank you so much for this tutorial it really helped even though it's 9 years old.

collectors should already know this but Nintendo did actually start with their Seal saying " official Nintendo seal of quality" this version of the seal lasted until the Gameboy Advance era, which is when they switched to the current version of the seal (official Nintendo seal). the original red and blue versions of Pokemon do not have either seal on the cart.

Looking at the fake Diamond cartridge and comparing it to my copy that I've had since the game originally came out, Dialga's not on the cartridge. Is that something that was changed on later copies? Or is that just another mistake the person bootlegging it made? Generally just curious.

I just bought a GBA fake Pokémon Emerald Green or Leaf Green (can't remember) and it was fake which I didn't realize UNTIL RIGHT AFTER I BOUGHT IT I don't really feel like going through the trouble to return it but I can't cancel my order (It's Ebay BTW) so what should I do?

I got a fake Mario kart DS cartridge once. It had the proper lettering on the pins but I could tell it was a fake because the printing on the box and sticker was poor. Speaking of the sticker, the DS logo was off-centre. Also my copy was supposed to be the european model (had the pegi rating and CE mark) but it came with the US manuals and contact details

I ran into this problem recently. Upgraded from DS lite to 3DS XL and my New Super Mario brothers is now unplayable. Error code pops up when I try to initiate gameplay. The cartridge played fine in the DS lite. Upon further inspection I come to find out that the cartridge is a fake. Bummer. Guess I will just throw it away and get another at GameStop. Going to really give it a good inspection now that I know how to identify fakes. Thanks for the info!

just spent 24 bucks on etsy for a Pokemon Black, cartridge definitely too new and clean, with the contact area for the game card larger and red, comes up as deep labrinth, weird menu opens up when I open the game, but as long as I select the ds option pokemon black plays. it works and it was cheaper then a used copy you may come across at ganestop.

Why does GameStop sell open NEW games ? There supposed to be Sealed from the factory. This is why I never buy new from GameStop. And unless your there every single day buying games the club price just doesn't pan out. I stick to the stores from now on like Walfart. But Walfart has this resealing thing so they can sell you a used game that's new to you. Makes it very hard to buy new from them. So this got me price matching there own company lol. If you price match you'll save like 90% off there own store price. K I gotta get to what I was doing. Kinda got sidetracked.

People say that fake games won’t load on a 3ds, but I have that exact same Pokémon diamond game, it works perfectly fine on my 3ds 😅 Sometimes it may take a few tries to get it to load, but it works and doesn’t crash or anything

Damn, my copy of Puyo Pop Fever is definitely fake. The first giveaway was the really shitty cover quality that my case had, but also, if you look at the back where you can see part of the cartridge, there are normally random letters and numbers. Mine spells out Nintendo. Luckily, the game has worked with no problems and it hasn't destroyed my 3DS or anything, but that's still really fucking aggravating.

I have a Pokémon Black, Emerald and Leaf Green cardridge that were all bought retail. They also have the "Seal of Quality" on there but they are original cardridges. So I don't know if that's entirely accurate, or if it's just a regional thing.

Now when you say it’s fake, obviously it’s been replicated. But does it actually have Pokémon diamond on the cartridge? Are you able to play it? Or is it just blank and worthless? If it does play then it’s still not worthless.

the seal of quality on super princess peach's label says "seal of quality" but is definitely not a fake. i bought it new at mediamarkt (austrian market, comparable to walmart.)

Some of the new DS fakes coming from China a literally just cheap flash carts with the rom loaded in it. It's particularly prevalent in Pokemon carts.

You also failed to mention looking closely at the "E". The fake copy will have an E that's not as big as a real copy

i bought the us version of a game that ive already played the eu version of on my 3ds, why im concerned is because it shows up as a new game in my activity log. could this be a sign of it being fake or just the system thinking its a different game because its the us version.

On my platinum The only thing to tell it is fake is the text on the sticker is darker Real or fake

I automatically knew that diamond is fake. The cartrodge will look like pearl's, with a blue shade and no dialga on the sticker. Right?

I just bought a Pokemon Black 2 off eBay and it might be a fake. It doesn't work on 2 of the DS's I tried it on but it does work on a 3DS. Does that seem weird? Also is it a tell if it's fake when the letters and numbers are off center on the back in the grooves?

My Pokémon soulsilver game passes all the points in the video but for some reason when I try to play the coin game at the game corner it doesn't load and stays black and alot of people say that means the game is fake but it passes every point so I don't see how it could be

You made this very unclear for people in other countries... it all other countries, it says "Original Nintendo *Seal of Quality*" meaning if you do see that and it's a UK version the game isn't fake. You can tell if a game is UK version because on the bottom the code ends with USA for Amercian games and EUR for all other countries (excluding Japan, which is JPN)
