i jugde a card on what format im thinking, what kind of stuff does it synergize with it. if its a creature does it have protection agianst burn/removal. Set. Not on only about the card.

I'm trying to get into Magic because my boyfriend plays it and so I tried searching for "what defines a good card in magic" and got to this - I don't think I understand what to look for when building a deck (I'm trying to build a commander deck from random cards my boyfriend had in a big box - most of it are somewhat trashy common cards). I have a commander that can get artifacts from my graveyard into the battlefield (3 colorless, 1 black, 1 white and 1 blue cost) so I build around that and I love the graveyard mechanics so I was wondering if you knew of any common cards I should be looking for when going through them all :) Thanks a lot for the help

I mostly play flood decks. My best is my mono green elf, loads of 1/1 tolkens, +1/+1 to elves from many sources, elves count for mana, and still modern, a few switches and it can be standard. down side- no flyers, but great life gain in it. and for its colour its pretty fast.

Quibble: No card is stand alone good until you know the rest of the set. If every creature had an ETB "destroy target artifact" then the Smuggler Copter would be nothing so the quality of the hate matters a lot.

Angel of Tithes may have been a bad example, that card was always destined to be a decent pull because of Death and Taxes being a thing in eternal formats. Still, I get what you're saying and I agree with your overall thesis. Keep up the good work.

Batterskull + Stoneforge was a thing in standard once in standard once apon a time. Wizard misses things. Hell stoneforge was insane with anything that came in with a germ token.

Hey Des, long time watcher and love your content. Just wanted to know a little more info on why you feel "indestructible" gets beat by "first strike" for combat reasons. I would think indestructible is better because you can continue to block or attack without worry compared to the "first strike" creature eating a removal spell.

So, you say that if we hold a lot of really good cards, then we are the problem with magic, then at the end you say to hold onto good cards?

Why would first strike be better than indestructible? Barring infect or some kind of triggered ability, indestructible is going to shrug off combat damage completely, making it more versatile than first strike, which is only going to prevent damage by killing the opponent's creature first.

what about treasure cruise and dig through time? those cards were enormous mistakes

umm, black/green constellation was a fantastic deck that dominated for a time. It was headlined by eidolon of blossoms and doomwake giant... both fantastic cards with constellation. both of them were card advantage making machines.

while panharmonicon is good in commander it isnt in any top tier standard decks so I wouldn't call that a mistake from rnd

lol all these people in the comments saying that smugglers copter shouldn't be banned that way they can still play with a broken card in standard I don't think they realize how good drawing stuff is even if you discard something

It sounds entirely too much like 100% of your judgment criteria is just on standard meta when there are a handful of other factors in play. Sure, standard is one of the most forgiving formats, "goodness" wise, but commander contributes a ridiculous amount of additional criteria. Looter scooter? Nearly nonexistent. Paradox Engine? Hot new infinite *thing* combo. Like Archangel of Tithes? Absolute money just by sitting there giving your opponent the bird while you build up.
