Great video Dave. I used to work in the microchip wholesale market about 6 years ago. Chinese counterfeits and counterfeiters were (and are) rampant and insidious. To make matters worse, people would get burned by buying from vendors, thinking that because they weren't in China, they were safe. As you pointed out in your video, counterfeits spread like a cancer and a cursory look at a vendor is almost guaranteed money lost. Your vid brought all my detective skill memories flooding back. Great job, looking forward to more vids!

Thanks. Indeed its not the Chinese wholesalers that are the entire problem, its the UK vendors who resell them as genuine. Thanks for commenting. Dave.

Happened to me this week I reported the seller after receiving the fake item, I knew right away it was fake because it was too light to be silver and the seller refunded probably within the 5 minutes of me reporting him. Goes to show the type of person you dealing with they're scared of others finding out what they're doing knowingly.

Darksun Above I sell real sterling silver on eBay, and I couldn't imagine lying about an item because I would get terrible reviews. I wonder how people can get away with doing this... Why doesn't eBay just shut them down?

Hi Dave, thanks for this. I'm a jewellery maker and I also sell genuine vintage silver on eBay and Etsy. The blue box trick extends to QVC items (I am a collector of and sell a lot of Diamonique) as well as vendors describing cheap cubic zirconia as Diamonique, much like describing a vacuum cleaner as a hoover but if it's not stamped DQCZ it's not from QVC. A lot of sellers buy cheap QVC copies also from China and sell them as Diamonique but QVC only sell precious metal and like you say about the Tiffany designs, there are far more for sale (and nowhere near as lovely) than QVC ever made!As you probably know Links of London is one of the most copied brands on eBay. To share with your subscribers my advice is watch out for the boxes, the originals don't have the link logo on the top; also make sure the vendor displays the hallmarks which even the tiny charms have and as you say if it's too cheap it's most likely fake!Its not all bad news, though! I buy a lot of supplies, mainly beads and findings, from China and have always had excellent quality and service so there are wonderful vendors in China and other parts of the world as there are in the U.K. and when I find them I always give A* feedback and repeat custom as it must be hard to compete when even your government encourages your competitors to rip people off. To be honest, imho it's one thing making a cheap 99p bracelet and selling it for 99p but to import a load of them and rip others off deliberately, charging ten times the price is just wicked.A huge thank you for helping us all and also for valiantly reporting to eBay, like you say, they don't listen but a least you do it and don't give up. By making these videos you are educating hopefully many of us who can vote with our feet (and not buy which eBay will notice!) and avoid getting ripped off. You're a star.😊

I stupidly bought 925 leverback earring findings recently from 3 different sellers on Ali Express. The weight of the finished 925 earrings was a fraction of the scrap value of sterling silver.They were solid brass plated in silver (maybe). As the guy says, it the secondary sellers are the problem. I notified one Etsy reseller about this problem as she was obviously reselling one of these products and got the answer Thanks.

Great video. I bought a Tiffany bracelet from eBay recently. The seller was a reputable jeweller and I did my research before I bought. My bracelet is authentic but the amount of fakes on eBay is disturbing. It makes me angry that eBay don’t do anything.

@CelticDreamsCoUk 6 жыл бұрын
indeed. I have reported many sellers. But I have never known of a listing being taken down. eBay make money regardless, so don't really care. Its a shame, but I hear people leaving eBay all the time, for this reason. Sad that its gone that way. China copy and fake everything - even copying cars ! its a vast industry. But the Chinese government deny everything. Dave

I completely agree with everything you say. I recently bought some fake Gucci perfume. When the postman delivered it the bottle had cracked and was leaking everywhere. I couldn’t send it back as Royal Mail rightly so wouldn’t allow a leaking bottle in with their mail. The seller was reported for selling fakes by myself and other ebayers yet is still selling fake bottle of perfume. Her feedback now in something like minus 30 percent. I never received a refund as I could return the item. I have also noticed a lot of Chinese sellers say in listing they’re based in the uk but when you look at their details they’re based in China somewhere. As you can see it makes me so angry. eBay used to be a great site to buy on. Now I’m very careful as I’ve been ripped off too many times.

Im trying to figure out if silver chains on etsy are worth buying, they're 1/2-1/3 the price of one from the local jeweller. From the uk and stamped 925 with rhodium coating but idk how else i could tell without actually buying it.

dave those chinese rings that are marked 925 ain't silver at all i had one of these rings and was gonna make one out of white gold but had to remove the crown put a torch to melt the soldier on the crown and the entire ring disintegrated a splash of soldier in the sink looks like some type of tin based soldier like from radio shack
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 3 жыл бұрын
Oh dear. I guess in order to make the casting process low temperature (and cheap) they likely use tin and zinc alloys which melt at very low temperatures and hence can be cast in cheap rubber moulds, with minimal equipment and cost. I now try to avoid anything without full hallmarks. Thanks for watching, and sharing your comments. Dave

Thanks so much for this post. I always thought there were rules on eBay for how an item can be described and that the item would be removed if reported as a fake etc. I also thought if something was stamped 925 that it should be genuine. Is there no regulating body for this!?! wow
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 4 жыл бұрын
That's the problem many people think 925 is a hallmark. And the Chinese rely heavily on this ignorance. it isn't a guarantee. It should be, but anyone can buy a 925 stamp for a couple of pounds and stamp your cat if you wish, but that doesn't make it silver. The only real guarantee is a full hallmark, the item is sent to a government assay office and tested, it is then stamped with the metal, purity assay office stamp and a date letter etc. Most countries have some version of this system. A proper hallmark is evidence it has been officially tested. a 925 stamp means nothing. Yes ebay state that an items described as silver must be hallmarked, but they don't uphold anything. ebay are making money regardless. Dave

There are some pieces that you can get for around .99¢ that are in fact real-two out of the four pieces I've purchased have been real. But, like you said, most of the cheap silver pieces you buy from eBay are fake.
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 6 жыл бұрын
New silver (sheet & wire) is currently around £1 per g. So if you have bought a new bracelet for 99c, then if its more than 1g in weight its very unlikely to be real silver at that price. Dave

How can they get away with selling fake stuff on eBay? Why doesn't eBay shut them down. If they're saying it's real silver but it's not then they are lying about the item description...
@CelticDreamsCoUk

Sadly eBay doesn't care, because some of these Chinese wholesalers have sales in the hundreds of thousands. So eBay are making a fortune out of listing fees and commission. I would argue a point thought that eBay are therefore profiting from illegal activity. But its a huge problem and it really needs international government level action to stop the flood of Chinese fakes. But If I can help my fellow jewellers be safe and avoid getting ripped off, then that's one small victory at least. Dave

Great online detective work! At 6:15 minutes it shows "120 positive feedbacks within 30 days" in the upper-left corner but the right side shows the most current feedbacks as "more than a years ago" and the time period is "all" (the default setting of "all" shows the most current feedback first). How is this possible? Hopefully eBay fixed this anomaly.

I've seen these items on ebay and the price should give it away. I reported a seller for selling fake Garrett products, I also sent the listing details to Garrett themselves as they obviously take the issue much more serious than ebay, ebay don't give a crap as long as they get their bit of the sales. I now let the genuine manufacturers know when I find a fake, but shutting these sellers down is one big game of whack a mole.
