THANK YOU for the info! Always enjoy your videos! great tutorial. Can I spray baste my quilt top first? I want to be able to add a stitch around an applique to the top / then base to batting and backing.

Hope to win. I havent tried titanium. Due to arthritis in my fingers,I cant press hard on ruler, so I use 10# weights to hold ruler stable. Before getting weights, oi used gallom milk jug filled w rocks. Id slide it onto ruler.

I always spray toward the inside of the quilt, directing the spray away from the edges so there is no overspray.

Quilt Basting: I call it a dreaded chore...but no more. For the last year, I quilt baste on my design wall (I have an 8x8 moveable). It has the advantage of (1) allowing gravity to work with me; (2) terrific visual on alignment (North, South, East West, so no cockeyed placements!). I never use pins (except to hang my pieces and the jewelers double pronged pins work well for this). I use a combo of spray (homemade and I've bought the commercial spray) and 1/2" fusible webbing strips as I feel that it gives me the best result. (I think that basting powder is blendered fusible web--fusible web is cheaper (and I'm cheap). As I'm vertical, basting powder will not work. I fuse the webbing with a lightweight iron (I use an older one with no auto shutoff) or a garment steamer. (I use the combo as I find it works better for me).

Love your plan, Leisa! Until our home renovation the largest wall in the house was may 'gravity wall' and it worked great. I love my basting spray and appreciate all the different options for quilter to choose which works best for them. I'm just so grateful not to have to use pins any more, not to mention crawling around on the floor! LOL Thanks so much for all your tips! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

My first quilt that I did and use a bonding spray, there was spray outside the backing and it’s was stained +++ and not able to took it off. I was obliged to do and other backing over. Now, with what you show how to do it! I now know that I put too too too much! Thanks to show me how to proceed!!! But I know that I stayed on place !! And it was not that company! I am going to buy one tomorrow!!! Lol!

Thanks for sharing, Claudette! It is surprising how little you need to use to keep all three layers together. We tend to add more than necessary. I've been using the spray adhesive for a few years and love how it works! I'm sure next time it'll go much better! 😊 Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

I love spray basting but I turn off the fan in my sewing room when I am spraying. Because of the overspray. I find there is no odour at all to 505 spray. If someone is really concerned about the chemical odour, I would say to spray outside. I use a pool noodle to baste on my design wall, with the 3 layers pinned onto the wall and I use my 6” x 24” ruler to smooth the fabrics out. I can baste a throw sized quilt in 15 minutes.

Thanks so much for this tutorial, it was very helpful! I have two cans of this spray and have not used it yet! I have been a pin baster for 20 years! When spray basting your quilts, do you recommend immediately washing your quilts after you have completed the quilting and sewed on the binding? Thank you!

It's time to give it a try, Nancy! I only worry about washing my quilts if they are being gifted right away. Otherwise there's no hurry. I actually has one glued for over 2 years before I got to it and there was no problem at all. It quilted fine and washed up very well. Let me know how you like using the spray baste. I had big spray basting party for 7 quilt tops (a few years ago) and then I found that the thread was breaking every 12" or so when quilting. I had to use thread conditioner and a tefalon needle on my machine to fix this. I guess I had over done the glue and yet I wonder if this has ever happened to you.

Oh wow, I've never had that happen! I've had a couple quilts that sat for over 2 years and they were fine. My guess is that there was too much adhesive and was catching the thread. Thanks for sharing your problem solving technique, that's a great fix! Happy Quilting, Lea Louise

When do you spray starch your quilt
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise
@InspiredQuiltingbyLeaLouise Жыл бұрын
Hi Pauline. Starching my quilt fabric is something I've never done. Perhaps b/c I began sewing garments and then began to quilt I never felt it necessary. I'm very happy with the results w/o any starch. Quilters I've seen using starch generally do that before any cutting begins. Try a couple samples with and w/o to see what works best for you.
