Well we are coming to pointy end of this rebuild but the work is slow and tedious from here on out. In this episode I'm spraying gelcoat and I'll show you how I got a mirror finish by sanding it all flat. Sit back and enjoy!

Doing a gel coat job is easy. You just sand, and sand, and sand, and sand, and sand, and sand some more. Then you're ready to prep. Sand again, and sand again, and sand again, and sand again.... Then spray the primer... Then, sand again, and sand again, and sand again... Then FINALLY spray some gel coat! Then, you have to sand it, and sand it , and sand it some more. You get the idea. And, don't forget to clean it real good with acetone in between sanding. All joking aside, I think you did a very good job! You'll be done in a few years... I wouldn't have the patience for it, mate...

The acetone between coats is a persistent error in the industry. All it does is weaken the bond with the subsequent gelcoat application. SMH

Thank you for all your videos. This one in particular! I'm working on my own project and watching and learning from you has given me the confidence to take on more challenging projects. Im going to spray my sides now with gelcoat. I chickened out with the bottom. But I think I can do it now after watching you. THANKS. Mate this is awesome, I’m currently rebuilding a v19c and is my first rebuild. Been a huge learning curve and your vids just keep coming out at the right time just before I’m about to do what you post👌 its the original Haines blue and white at the moment honestly not a huge fan of the blue and watching this really has me considering re painting. Finally finished all the glassing just today and about to paint the inside floor storage boxes ext. u should bring her down to tassie and fish eaglehawk neck when it’s done. Looks like you might have her done just before the fishing gets red hot down here. Cheers mate👌

Heard what you said about the 2K top hull paint. I did the same, gel coat bottom, 2K top. Definitely easier to apply (there is a video of me doing it on my channel and the paints I used) but 3 years since I finished my build I do wish I had done the top in gel coat as well. Plenty of esky and spear gun scratches in it now. Also, I built some seat boxes and tried using a generic high build primer under the marine 2K top coat like you said you would, and it is soft as cake. If you hit the top coat with a spear, it pushes a chip of the top coat into the high build primer. I would definitely spray or roll multiple coats of epoxy primer (Norglass Shipshape is good) instead of a single layer of high build to get your thickness up. Good luck with the project.

Great work impressed how your sticking to it. youll be happy with the 2 pac top deck easier to keep clean and looks good for longer i reckon. awesome job

Looking good mate ✅ Spraying Gelcoat is very difficult. It probably won’t be a problem on the transom, but thick gelcoat on flex points will crack. Reckon you could of started with 240 just lightly to get the tops of the dimples off, and use a spray bottle with water instead of the rag n bucket.

Do they have Awlgrip down under? Ditch the gel coat and put down the Awlgrip. You would be done by now.

Thx for this video - very informative. Could you bring some light on coverage area per volume of gel coat, what was the time wait between the coats, were you retaping the edge between the coats, how soon did you take all the tape off after the last coat?

Wow just found your build great stuff I have a 600c that needs transom and stringers replaced I have been lost with what to do with it the only difference is I have a factory built in cabin I'm thinking it a way to big of a job for me you make it look so easy

I used a Stanley 2.5hp with a 50l tank. I’m not sure how it would go spraying paints but it only just gives me enough to spray gelcoat.

Great video sir. How would you handle a run that occurs in between the non waxed gel coat. Is it possible to sand them out or is it too gummy? How long to wait in between coats?

Runs are unlikely given the thickness of the gelcoat but I would leave it and sand it out once you have done your waxed coat and everything is fully cured.

Gday mate i used 2 pack polyurethane as my top coat and epotec 2 pack epoxy as my base /primer coat cn my little tub there are 2 coats of epoxy touch up spraying any sand throughs and 3 coats of top coat , i unfortunately could not spray as the young lass next door was in the third trimester of her pregnancy even though i could mask the area up like a spray booth i didnt spray .just for that reason alone , i had to roll and tip the whole boat by hand ,it would never look as good as the others i have sprayed but it is reasonable and still gets comments from passers by so i must have done a ok job , so far i have managed to put a whole 5 hours on the new yamaha it ill be a long time before its first service , on the inside i used the epoxy primer in grey green mainly for its durability and also because of it low reflective quality cant believe people polish the inside of there ali boats anyway all the best for the sides and top of the transom maybe go to your local auto paint supplier and see what polishes they recommened there not cheap but they do a great job and last a good while tell them what your dong gives them a better idea of what to use , i had to sand out some marks where the tipping left brush marks as it didnt flow out well in spots and you wouldnt know they were ever there take care .

Yup spraying gelcoat outside mold is a waste of time. BUT the solution we have had in usa for 30+ years is to use Duratec gelcoat from Hawkeye industries. It uses different chemistry and fully cures on surface and it can be sprayed to a smooth gloss finish , you can also mix the clear Duratec with your ‘special color’ of gelcoat to make it come out smooth and fully cured. The finish product could be left as is but usually sand starting with 400 or 600 grit then buff and go! Cheers Warren

Duratec will convert your gelcoat in something very different. If you don’t want to sand use paint. Duratec is garbage.

@@alexbernal4988 well you must be using it wrong or don’t understand Duratec. I’ve used Duratec or similar Fourseal (until they stopped making it) for 40 years. I don’t use the hi gloss option very often but Duratec has true high build primers , potentially much higher build than the Alex seal primer , but I’ve not used the Alex seal. Duratec primer can be built up from 10-30+ mil in one ( multi coat) application, wet on wet. It sprays like simple lacquer primer! It’s is easy to sand and depending on product can be polished to a high enough gloss finish to make molds from as I have done all my working life building pattern /plugs , models molds etc. The high gloss option when mixed with gelcoat or primer , various options to choose from, can produce very high gloss right out of the spraygun needing minimal to no sanding depending on what you end product or use is. Duratec uses chemistry that allows a 100% full cure on the surface without any air inhabitation , ie no surface dry additives like ‘wax’ required. But If I’m Building a boat or repairing I would use Alex seal or other similar linear urethane gloss paint if I had the facilities. It has the best uv protection available. A blanket statement ‘Duratec is garbage’ is of no value it has its place and is a Incredible productline that transformed the tooling industry. For my self and at my shop I have done a number of projects to a hi gloss standard that have stood the test of time outside. Cheers Warren

You got that looking good. I am curious how long you left it between your coats? Because gel coat wont set properly until its covered right? be it flowcoat or something else.

I have the same question? how many coats of unwaxed? How long between coats? was anything put on after the unwaxed coats such as pva? Or did you simply spray a few coats of unwaxed and top with a final coat of waxed to make it cure?

Hello sir, I'm also building a custom livewell for my boat. I was wondering if you will put fairing compound and gelcoat the inside of your livewell. I'm having difficulty to see how to do the fairing

Hey mate, no fairing compound required in the inside. I finished mine with a light blue gelcoat that contains wax in styrene so it fully cures.

Nice, how long do you wait between your 3 no-wax coats and how long do you wait before doing the with wax coat ???

I just finished spraying the grey gelcoat on the sides of the boat and I did two full coats non waxed back to back and then sprayed 1 coats no wax 1 coat wax the next day. Worked well. I think in mould applications they wait 3 - 4 hours between coats but that’s because they risk it popping from the mould if it heats up to much.
