My wife and I have tea or coffee everyday at a huge city park while we're doing our morning chores. We feed the birds wild bird seed that includes millet, milo and black oil sunflower seeds. I think we enjoy watching the birds eat their treat as much as they like eating it. So, I think I'm going to start sprouting the seeds to give it a better nutritional value. I hope the little guys like it more and it improves heir health !!!

This is a wonderful video; I never knew that a dry millet stick could be sprouted. Seeing your birds in this video going right after it is wonderful. Originally my budgies would only eat seeds, then I saw your video on chop and they started doing better with vegetables. Then you did a video on sproutings with mung beans, peas, lentils, etc. My birds got better with sproutings also, but I must admit that a lot would wind up being tossed around and dropped on the floor; I would then let them resort to seeds. You made this sprouting with a millet stick look easy. Now I know I can do it and I'm confident that my birds will eat it because it will be attached to the stick where they will peck and pull at it.

I never thought of doing that with Millet....Guess I know what I will be doing today ;). I did purchase some millet from Bakers Creek last year and grew some millet for my birdies :). I was afraid it was going to be eaten by the wild birds before I had a chance to harvest but luckily they didn't seem to care...Thanks for the video :)

It’s weird how wild birds don’t go crazy for millet like caged birds do. I wonder why? I hung a sprig of millet up near a bird feeder and the house finches and sparrows totally ignored it. But they go crazy for black oil sunflower seeds. Whereas my birds (budgie and parrotlet) go absolutely bonkers for millet like it’s their last meal lol

My parents and I can only all agree on having birbs as pets so far. 1 or 2 of the same species, depending on if that species is a solitary one like a canary. I hope we can foster them from first from a resuce like Calgary Humane Society. This time we will have a complete care book with pictures and print pages from websites and find ways to save time. Luckily, I have already been growning some edible plants and soaking/spouting grains, nuts, seeds and legumes since I was 17. I won't have to learn how to do those from scratch after we have the pets. I also make DIY fertilizer from plant scraps

If you have several or a female they can be nasty to other birds. I have one male Lovebird and he is fine with my other birds. Lovebirds can be more aggressive if you have two or more.

You can separate the seeds and then sprinkle them on top of 1/4” of soil that you’ve placed inside of some small yogurt containers, 8 oz. Ball Canning Jars etc. and then use a spray bottle to moisten the seeds and soil and then cover them with some sort of lid and place them in a dark place like inside a cupboard, drawer etc. to allow the seeds to sprout and then when they’re a couple of inches tall, remove them and place them near a window in indirect light. They will turn very green and grow a few inches tall. And then give them to your birds. ……… You can do the same with Wheat Berries (seeds) to make wheatgrass. Soak the wheat seeds overnight though instead of just spraying them. I sprinkled Millet Seeds densely in a large pot filled with soil outside and the Millet is already 3 ft. tall and already has many sprays that are 3” - 4” long. You can grow your own!

Hi there. Once it has sprouted how long can they last before they go bad?
@Loveofpets
@Loveofpets 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. It will keep on growing once sprouted. Keep rinsing it. I find it goes bad after a few weeks. You will see either mold or it will wilt. To be safe use it for a week. Sprout a half a millet spray and give it to your birds once sprouted. It shouldn't last too long if they eat it right away.

Hi! I tried sprouting mine and today is the fourth day and it was going very well and I started to be able to see sprouts, but then I saw mold growing on the millet in multiple places. How do I keep the millet from molding?
@Loveofpets
@Loveofpets 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, make sure when you rinse it that it is on a strainer and not sitting in water as that can make them grow mold. Also you can rinse it with vinegar and water. Rinse in cold water. Rinse, shake off water and put in strainer, shake strainer so that no water collects. Fill a jar with cold water and add some white vinegar and put millet in and spin jar to clean the millet. Don't spin or shake to hard or millet may come loose.

Hi! Have you actually tried growing millet from the sprays? If so, did it work? Millet is getting so expensive to buy, and I've even had issues where the local stores didn't have any in stock for a few weeks! One of my birds is a millet addict, so this didn't go well for him (or me for that matter). If you haven't tried growing millet from a spray, do you know if there's some special kind of millet seeds you have to get to grow millet? That seems like a dumb question, but I don't know if millet seeds from a spray have been treated in some way to prevent people from growing their own sprays. I just want to start growing some ASAP, since I know it will take months for it to produce new sprays. Anyway, this is a great video. My birds are super picky and may not eat sprouts, but I'm going to try it. 🙂🙂🙂

With so many birds, most likely your sprouted millet sprays were all consumed in a day? If you had any left, how long would these sprouted millet spray continue to sprout and be fresh? I got my birds a cat forager toy for Christmas and thought putting millet spray in the forager would get them to play and use it. Rainbow has never seen and never had any millet spray and he is 3.25 years old. My Mango is 9 1/3 years old and had it a few times many many years ago. Surprisingly, Mango doesn’t remember the millet spray so both were deathly afraid of it. I did a video on this a couple of weeks ago and after trying for awhile, they both still don’t care for it. Strange isn’t it. So when you mentioned that your budgies were afraid of it and finally were the last ones to approach the sprouted millet, I can understand why considering both my budgies have absolutely no interest in their millet spray.
@Loveofpets
@Loveofpets 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, there was sprouted millet left over. I rinse them and put it in the strainer and give it back the next day and repeat until its all gone. Once my budgies saw the other birds eating it, they came over and ate it. I put a small piece in their cage near a perch and they ate the whole thing. When they are out of the cage they are so busy playing and flying that food is the last thing they want but at the end of the day they go into their cage and eat. Now I will continue to put it in their cage as they preferred to eat it this way. One of them bathed in it, lol. I wished I could of got it on camera.

Love of Pets--if you see this, where do you find that healthy looking, fat millett? I keep buying it and it is dry and crumbly. 😔

Its more nutritional for them. They eat sprouted seeds in the wild and barely eat dry seed. Fresh foods are always better for our birds.
